Work Text:

Killua’s never been this far from home before—not on his own. He’s been to plenty of different countries with his family, but he’s never been allowed to wander by himself. The air somehow feels lighter and fresher. Back home, it always felt stuffy.

The market around him is bustling, people coming and going, perusing the goods at stalls and stores. There’s so much noise, so many people talking at once. Killua loves it. The world feels alive.

Killua grins to himself, holding his head high as he walks through the streets. No one knows him here, and maybe he should be worried about his brother finding him, but right now, Killua doesn’t care.

“Incoming!” Someone shouts, right before a weight comes crashing into Killua’s back.

He goes tumbling to the ground, grunting, with the person on top of him. Killua and whoever just ran into him fumble around to get themselves situated, before Killua lifts his head to glare.

“Hey!”

“Sorry!”

The biggest hazel eyes meet Killua’s gaze, and for a moment, Killua is left speechless. Then after another moment, Killua finds himself flushing because the human boy who just ran into him is really cute.

“Um…” Killua stumbles over his thoughts.

“Hi!” The boy beams, unphased. “I’m Gon!”

“I’m, uh, Killua.”

Gon’s eyes are sparkling. What the heck. “Say, Killua, do you wanna join me and my friends?”

Killua stares at him. “How do I know you aren’t gonna kill me and take my stuff?”

“Kurapika might,” Gon says seriously, nodding sagely. “But only if he doesn’t trust you.”

“Do you think you can trust me?”

Gon smiles. “Nope!”

Killua can’t stop himself from laughing. He doubles over with it, and when he’s done, holding his stomach, Killua says, “Okay. I’ll join you guys.”

Gon’s smile is blinding.
