Break me down and build me up

Summary:

Percy Jackson was supposed to be a normal child but unfortunately for him he was born as a demigod with animal features and Zeus is under the impression that Percy is the one who stole his bolt so now he has to go on a life threatening quest to get it back and stop a war, but at least he'll find a family along the way.

Chapter Text

The Styx was not a kind or merciful goddess. When oaths made in her name were broken she punished the oath breakers unmercifully, but when gods are the oath breakers she couldn't punish them so she had to punish their demigod children instead.

Years ago, after the end of the war between Zeus, Poseidon and Hades' children, the three made an oath in her name to not sire anymore demigod children.

Zeus cracked first, siring a little demigod daughter named Thalia. Styx visited her in her crib, cursing her to have wolf features. This ensured that she would never lead a normal life, not even by demigod standards.

5 years later and Poseidon sired a demigod, a little boy named Perseus. Styx visited him as well, looking at him as he lay asleep without a care in the world. The river goddess put a finger on his forehead, feeling the magic flow through her. She knew exactly what animal features to curse the boy with, watching with bitter satisfaction as the fluffy cat ears and long cat tail took form.

The Styx smiled cruelly, not only would Poseidon's forbidden child not have a normal life but the features would affect his ability to be in his father's main domain.

She left the mortal world with the hope that her punishment for Perseus taught the gods what would happen to their children if they break their oaths again.

Chapter 2

Notes:

This is a sort of filler chapter about Percy meeting Grover for the first time, the next chapter will be about the dreaded field trip

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

I stood in front of the door to my dorm room at my new boarding school, Yancy Academy. Yancy is my sixth school in as many years and I didn't want to be here, fancy schools like this always had bullies. But at least it's better then living with Gabe for an entire year.

Gabe is my step-dad and he's awful. He's drunk most of the time and he loves to blame me for things I haven't done so he has an excuse to abuse me and use me as a glorified punching bag, not that he even needs an excuse. And don't get me started on his drinking buddies, with the way they talk about me they could sometimes be worse than Gabe.

Everytime my mom sends me off to a boarding school I always worry about her being alone with Gabe, but luckily her job means that she's out on business trips a lot and is barely around the apartment so she doesn't have to feel the pain I feel everytime I'm around that man. It doesn't matter if I'm getting hurt as long as my mom is safe.

Bringing myself back to the present, I still had yet to go into my dorm room. I know that I need to unpack soon but I couldn't bring up the courage to go in. I was too anxious to meet the person who I'd be sharing a room with. What if they were cruel and mean? I didn't want to have to share a dorm room with a bully for an entire year.

I felt my ears press against my head from where they were squished under my beanie and felt the comforting weight of my tail wrapped around my waist. I hated hiding my features away but my mom warned me about cruel humans who'd want to capture me and experiment on me to see why I have them and that thought made me terrified, so I had no choice but to hide them away under hats and baggy clothing.

Taking a deep breath, I slowly opened the door and went into the room where my roommate was already unpacking his stuff.

He didn't look like a stereotypical bully. He was definitely taller then me that's for sure, but that's where the intimidation ended. He had curly brown hair and brown eyes that were kind but also had a trace of nervousness. He had acne and faint traces of a beard and there was a crutch propped up against his bed. If I'm being honest, this guy looks more like a target for bullies then a bully himself.

"Hey I'm Grover, you must be my new roommate" the boy, Grover, introduced himself. He tried to sound confident but his tone was anxious.

"Oh uhm yes I am, my name's Percy" I replied, feeling as anxious as Grover appeared to be.

Grover shook my hand in greeting, smiling at me in a way only my mom has ever done.

"Feel free to unpack and make yourself at home, I've got to make a call to someone" he told me before limping away. As he left I had to fight back a smile of my own, it seems like this year I'm finally going to have a friend.
