“Yo Noli, you still hanging out with that Seven guy?”
“Yeah? He’s pretty chill.”
“He’s your roommate or something now, right? Actually, I don’t know how you could stand living with someone like him. Must be unbearable.”
“...what do you mean?”
“Like, he’s kinda weird… Have you seen the way he talks to other people? He stares at you like you owe him a million bucks just by breathing near him.”
“Yup. And bro, does he sniff his own towel after he showers like what I heard from the other guys? A bunch of dudes saw him do it after soccer practice. Gross.”
“And also, who the hell chooses a bunch of numbers and shit for their hacker name? With a literal burger on his head?? Sounds childish as fuck, man.”
“Hey, knock it off, you jerks. He doesn’t deserve shit like this from you guys.”
“Bro, why are you defending this guy, dude?”
“Yeah! I mean, he kicked your ass in last year’s competition, no? And you fuckin’ killed it, too! Makes me think he hacked more than just the task, man…”
“No no no, he’s genuinely skilled, I’m telling ya. Y’all better put that respect on that name.”
“Yeah right, and what’s he gonna do to us? Tank all our grades? Heheheh.”
“I mean, there’s nothing stopping him. I could, for one. I’m just not that big of an asshole.”
“And what about you, Noli? What are ya getting out of for sucking cock for someone like him, anyway? You got any big projects you need to ride him off on? Ah, I totally get it man, you exploit that man for what he’s worth.”
“Actually, I think it’s the opposite, guys… Noli, I saw you running for groceries multiple times the other week. And I for one know you don’t drink Mountain Dew for a Dr Pepper guy. You’re doing errands for that little gremlin, aren’t ya?”
“I… could use the extra exercise, man. Look at me. Have you seen how flabby my arms are? Y’all been making fun of me for not hitting the gym with you guys. I’m exercising now, aren’t I?”
“Dude, I even saw you dragging laundry baskets sizes too large for you. I know you only wear hoodies ever in your fuckin’ life, man. You’re doing even his goddamn laundry??”
“He… needs more time with his own projects, dude. And I totally get it! We help each other once in a while.”
“He… helped you before? I find that hard to believe. What has he ever done for you? I’m genuinely curious; if he’s capable of anything other than fuckin’ code, that is.”
“Well… I mean, it doesn’t really matter? Guys — it’s called being a good roommate. Something you guys should learn a thing or two about.”
“Dude… you’re being used.”
“We’re saying all this stuff ‘cause we’re your friends, bro. We’re… kinda worried about you.”
“You should totally move out, bro. Come join us instead! We won’t use you… except maybe for a tiny little bit of our assignments. But that’s all! Scout’s honour.”
“Yeah, man. That ain’t healthy. Don’t treat yourself like that, dude.”
“Yeah! Ditch that motherfucker! You want me to punch him for ya, Noli?”
“Join us, dude. It’ll be fine. We miss ya. It ain’t right to see you like this, used by that asshole.”
But, I want to be used by him.
The dormitory fell silent as the clock struck nine, the darkness of a school night warded away with the bright hues that illuminated the carpeted hallways. Faint, distant sounds of rain pattering could be heard from the rows of tall windows, adding to the cozy atmosphere of the warm student housing. Padded footsteps could be heard from a pair of soggy sneakers that dragged along some muddy jeans, as a hooded college student shuffled towards his door. He struggled with his keys, but at last inserted the correct one and silently turned the rusty knob. The door made an unnerving creak, as if it opened a chamber of secrets never to be revealed to the world.
“Shut the door.” A sharp command rang out from within the room, colder than the wet weather outside. “You’re letting out all the heating.”
“Oh, sorry Seven.” The hooded figure humbly lowered his head as he tried to shut the same creaky door as slowly as possible. He then approached his roommate, seated in front of his beat-up laptop by the crowded study table, as always.
“Got ya some drinks.” He smiled from beneath his mask, adding to his soft, inviting tone. He waved a drenched plastic bag beside his apposite roommate, seeming to contain a six-pack of Mountain Dew Baja Blast behind the wet plastic.
“Thanks, Noli.” The focused coder was curt, blunt. “Now put them down, for Builderman’s sake. Or you’ll drip all over my laptop.”
“Right.” Noli quickly obeyed, but made sure not to set them down too quickly. He went to the back of the room to change out of his soaking wet hoodie, secretly eyeing his roommate if he was watching him as he stripped his shirt off, even if it was a little peek. He never was.
“Soooo, what’cha working on?” Noli slipped onto another comfy hoodie, resting his weary head within its hood as he pulled it up, shielding his wet hair. It was stupid enough for him to forget an umbrella. It’d be worse if he caught a cold now. “Looks highly technical.”
“Just some boring school assignment.” 007n7 sighed disappointedly, before kicking back from the table. “You know what, I’m done for the night. This is too much coding even for me.”
As 007n7 groggily rubbed his eyes, taking off his glasses, Noli hastily reached over his nightstand to source eye drops. “Hey, use these instead, Seven. You shouldn’t rub them too much.”
“What are you, my fucking mum now?” oo7n7 scoffed, shoving Noli’s hand away like he was offering poison. “Not like my eyesight’s gonna worsen. I never even saw you use them anyway.”
“Well, I did buy it for you…” Noli muttered to himself, but quickly switched the topic. He folded his legs as he settled onto his bunk bed, facing his roommate eagerly. “So, you just wanna relax now?”
“Mhm.” 007n7 leaned back against his arms. “But I’m too tired of games. I think I’ll hit the sack early tonight.”
“Y’know, Seven…” Noli wasn’t even sure if he wanted to go down this route tonight, but he had to make a start. “I… was thinking if we could like… just hang out and chat, tonight. B-but if you’re too tired, we can just sleep instead. No problem.” He waved his hands in reassurance.
“Sure.” 007n7 raised an eyebrow as he stared at a bashful Noli, treating him like some bizarre human exhibit from the 19th century. He reached over the table to hold up one can drink, ignoring the dripping rainwater as he handed Noli another. “Dude, I don’t remember you being like this when you first met.”
“H-Huh?” Noli nearly dropped his can, further proving his roommate’s point. The latter only judged him silently.
“Like, I thought you were this cool, awesome guy when I first saw you back during our first coding class. Thought you were some sort of bully with the entourage that followed you everywhere.”
“You… thought of me like that?” If it weren’t for his mask, Noli would have absolutely sucked in hiding the fact his cheeks were flaring up like a kid without an epipen.
“Sure.” 007n7 took a big swig from his can, oblivious to his shrinking roommate. “And from what I heard from you, I knew you were the real deal. Flawless coding.”
Noli felt his lips bleed as he bit them shut, patiently waiting for 007n7 to go on.
“And then I beat you in that competition. It was the best moment of my entire life.” 007n7 let out a big sigh before he turned around, flashing a self-satisfied grin. “But no hard feelings, right?”
“Y-Yeah…” Noli looked away, despite the safety of his mask. He recomposed himself lest his roommate began to notice, sitting upright again.
“Well, it was then I approached you too. After seeing you fire away at the keyboard I was like all what the hellllllll ” He awkwardly mimicked the melody of the internet meme he was referencing, eliciting a chuckle from his roommate. “Because I knew you were the… real deal.”
“Gotta thank you for that one, too.” 007n7 raised his can towards his roommate. “Since then, I wasn’t an outcast anymore. No longer the class pariah. People started to approach me too. You really had some effect with our classmates, man. It’s crazy.”
“I mean, they gotta recognise your talent, my dude.” Noli chimed in, ready to defend his honour. “A hidden fucking gem, and gone unnoticed until the competition? Wasted, I say. Wasted.”
“You even offered to move in with me after that, I think. Heard some said you were going a bit too far betting on this dark horse.” 007n7 gestured to a calendar hanging by the wall, a date circled in Sharpie for the next coding competition. But you could tell he was enjoying all this attention he was getting. “Seriously though, I never thought the former champion would want to come live with me. Especially with how much the previous guy bitched about me.”
“Well, I was like, YOLO.” Noli raised a peace sign in the air, swaying his body about. “And… I don’t really regret it. I like it here. I-I mean, we get to collaborate in so many projects much easier now! Yeah.”
“Yeah…” 007n7 smiled contently, and for a moment it would seem he was resting on his laurels. But he was far from that. He quickly got up, charged and energetic. “Right, I’m all pumped up! I gotta continue this coding. Nothing’s stopping me tonight. No sir!”
“Huh? W-Wait…” Noli scrambled to get up from his bed, almost hitting his head by the wooden bedframe in the process. “You just said you were gonna sleep after this. Seven, you gotta rest. You’re exhausting yourself.”
“Tela fucking mon, Noli. You really are a pain in the ass, you know that?” 007n7 angrily shrugged off his roommate’s hand over his shoulder. “You fucking spoonfeed me dopamine for a good 10 minutes and now you expect me to quit? I ain’t going to bed like this. I ain’t a quitter. I need to strive to be the best. In fact, I have something up my sleeve in the works…”
Deftly, 007n7 sourced an encrypted folder from his desktop screen, and within a few cryptic clicks it opened up, filling the entire screen. Noli can only watch in awe, completely frozen.
“I’m calling it the c00lGUI.” 007n7 grinned as he showed off the many ready features of his magnum opus, seemingly endless paired with its possibilities for the future of hacking. “There’s too many amateur hackers out there that put to shame the art of hacking. I’m gonna change that. I’m gonna be the first .”
“H-Holy shit…” With the state of the art equipment in front of him, Noli recognised yet was confused with some of the odd combinations amongst the strings of coding. A manuscript written in a language he understood, but yet seemed so foreign. He stared as if he were witnessing the advent of a new revolution in computer science. Half amazed, and oddly, half aroused. But he brushed it off. “Where are you even gonna test this out on? You can’t afford to fail or you’d be caught immediately.”
“Yep, that’s the tricky part. I was thinking… Builder Brothers’ Pizzeria.” oo7n7 chuckled malevolently, tapping on the screen to reveal a blurry screenshot. It was an online news article of the town’s opening of its latest branch. Pictured was a cheerful worker by the cashier, with a caption that read ‘Excited employee Elliot can’t wait for his first job to begin.’ “It’s brand new, dude. The security systems haven’t been set up yet. A hacker’s playground… And all for me to play with.”
“Gosh, imagine the potential… This has never been done before, Seven.” Noli excitedly pulled a nearby chair to sit beside his roommate, like an excited child being recruited for mischief. His eyes gleamed over the sheer amount of havoc the pair of them could unleash together. “So where do you want me to help? I can start ditching classes to fully work on this—”
But, 007n7 raised a palm towards his supposed partner in crime. “Whoa there, pardner. This rodeo is all mine. Sorry.”
“W-wh huh?” Noli stammered. “What do you mean? I thought—”
“This is too top secret to be leaked out. I can’t risk it. Only I would have access to this sweet baby. Ohh yeah.” 007n7 caressed his dusty laptop screen, ignoring his distraught roommate. “I can’t let this chance go. Can’t let anything go wrong.”
Noli’s breaths grew ragged. “Wait. B-But we always did things together. I thought that’s what we agreed on… Don’t you trust me?”
“Huh? What? I never said that. I don’t want anyone else working on this, that’s all. It cannot be leaked. Too risky.”
“So you do suspect me!” Noli didn’t know why he was fighting so much, feeling the strain on his throat. “I would never betray you, Seven. You know that! I’ll follow your lead. Just let me work together with you—”
“Oh for Telamon’s sake, Noli!” 007n7 snapped, finally turned to face Noli. “What’s gotten into you?! This is my life’s work, right here! I can’t let anyone else get involved in this and jeopardise everything! NO!”
Silence fell in the shared dorm room. The realisation soon set in upon 007n7, reflecting on the fact he just yelled at the college’s second best coder, the literal previous champion that he unseated. He noticed how unhinged it was to deny another professional hacker, one who shared his interests, from helping with the most important project of his life. But yet, he pressed on.
“...why do you want to work on this so much, huh?” 007n7 kneaded his face in frustration after taking off his glasses. “I want this to be a personal project, that’s all. Is that too much to ask for?”
“But you don’t understand! I can still help!” Noli was almost pleading, getting on his knees as he reached out to grab 007n7’s hand. It was making him uncomfortable, but Noli was too stressed out to hold himself back. “I-I don’t want to seem useless to you, Seven. I want to prove I can still be part of the future you’re gonna build. For hacking… For fucking Robloxia even! I… don’t want you to push me away…”
That last part was lowered to a whisper, and it didn’t seem 007n7 picked up on that. He looked too furious to even care. Quietly, Noli picked up the remaining of his dignity and slumped back to his chair like a chastised puppy, as his roommate stared angrily at his laptop screen, doing nothing. The atmosphere was tense, as the rain continued to patter outside their window.
Finally, 007n7 spoke. “You… want to help me?”
“Yes. Of course.” Noli got up, swallowing his tears. “Anything, Seven. Please. ”
007n7’s eyes remained fixated on his screen, the red hue of his C00lGUI reflecting off his glasses, the eyes beneath them emotionless. “The Void Star.”
“Huh?”
“You know about it, right? We learnt about it on Roblopedia a few months back.” The hacker turned towards his partner in crime, his face glazed with malicious intent. “I want you to bring it to me.”
“But how does this—”
“You want to help me, don’t you? You can, by bringing the Void Star back to me.” 007n7 got up from his chair, towering over a seated Noli. “You wanna prove yourself, Noli? This is your chance, buddy. Besides, it’ll be a fun adventure for you. Like you said, YOLO, right?”
“Right…” After swallowing what felt like a bitter pill, Noli suddenly shot up from his seat with renewed vigor, although his inferior height did not do much to impact his demanding partner. “Yeah, I’ll do it! You can count on me, Seven.”
“Good. You have three days.” Almost instantly dropping his sinister demeanor, 007ny went back to his laptop like nothing happened. He tapped his screen as he looked at a confident Noli. “Then maybe I’ll consider letting you in on this.”
Without saying a word, Noli went back to changing out of his sleeping hoodie, sourcing a hooded jacket, jeans and boots as 007n7 continued to type away lines of code. As he turned back, even he was shocked with the amount of equipment his roommate seemed to have conjured up out of nowhere behind his back. “Is that… fucking climbing equipment? Where the hell did you buy these??”
“I… did a bit of research back then.” Noli smiled sheepishly as he put on his gloves, another hand carrying a duffel bag. “Thought you may be interested in getting it in the future… together. I did buy a second set…”
“Nuh uh. This is a solo mission, remember?” 007n7 reminded his eager partner. “Also damn, you look like you’re ready to set off already. You sure? Don’t need sleep?”
“Nope! I already have the journey all pathed out in my mind, with a gadget of mine I made for last semester’s project.” Noli waved his phone. “You could try it out sometime if you’re too lazy to do some reading.”
Noli dragged his bag out of the door, clearly too heavy for him to carry as one person. The purple hue of his winter jacket shined beneath the bright lighting of the corridor. As he stood by the hallway, he turned back to 007n7, who apparently went back to coding already.
“...wish me luck?”
“Mhm.” 007n7 merely nodded, his fingers never breaking pace. The hooded college student quietly shut the door behind him.
It was a few minutes past ten. The night sky grew darker as the punishing rain never seemed to stop, but there was nothing but fate to stop a curious hooded figure marching into the void. He was on a mission, conviction deep within his heart.
A star… for a star.
Phew, this was harder than I expected. Where was the mountain track again?
Whoops, I think I dropped my compass there. Heck, who could see anything in this weather anyway? It’s just extra weight.
Good thing I bought this Thermos. Bad that I didn’t pack enough hot cocoa, though.
Brrr, this snowstorm is unbearable. If only I could hack my way to changing the weather with one simple code…
No, must focus. The Void Star should be close by. …if I didn’t stray off the tracks.
Maybe I should stop for a bit and watch these funny videos.
Okay, this is getting seriously cold. I think I should set up a tent here…
Where did my canopy go? Oh no…
I need to move on. The faster I get out of here, the better.
I can’t feel my fingers… I’m losing body heat. This jacket did jackshit…
Legs weak. My boots are stuck in the ground. I… can’t move… Help…
I’m… sorry, Seven.
Wait. Is that…?
Is that what I think it is?
Oh my gosh… I found it. I really found it.
Quick… must get my fat ass up there quick! March! Screw the pain!

Seven would be so happy to see this
He wouldn’t believe his eyes
Heheheheheh
He thought I couldn’t do it, but I did it
Then maybe he’ll finally let me on his blasted project
I shouldn’t have pushed him too hard though, it was kinda my fault
I’m sorry, Seven
I’ll make it up to you once I get home
