Summary
The town never looked different at night. Same crooked cross above the chapel, same gas station sign flickering like an anxious pulse. Brian had taken the long way home again—something he didn’t like to name.
That’s when he saw him.
Leaning against the diner wall, cigarette pinched between two fingers, a boy in a ripped denim jacket and dirty white sneakers. Blond hair matted from sweat. Blue eyes that should’ve looked tired, but didn’t. He watched people the way some animals do, like he’d bite first if he had to.
Brian couldn’t stop staring.
The boy caught him. Smirked, slow and bitter, he said: “You looking for something, preacher boy?”
Brian swallowed hard. “I was going to ask the same thing.”
