Summary:

How Jupiter met his first moon.

Notes:

decided to crosspost my submission onto ao3 cz i saw other people doing it!! this was my submission for a screenwriting event in the solarballs discord server which got 2nd place!! :DD 💖
currently working on something to celebrate it but for now here's my submission >.<

INT. JUPITER’S ORBIT

CAMERA pans down to show JUPITER reading a book to SATURN. No distinct dialogue until CAMERA switches to be closer to the two.

JUPITER
“…and she too rejoiced, her gaze upon her white arms round him pressed as though forever.”

Jupiter glances at Saturn to find that he has fallen asleep leaning against him. Jupiter shuts the book and dematerializes it. He opens his mouth to speak until he hears SUN.

SUN (O.S)
Saturn! Jupiter!

CAMERA quickly turns around to show Sun.

SUN (CONT’D)
Get back to your orbits!

CAMERA turns back around to Jupiter and Saturn. Sun’s loud voice startles Saturn awake. He blinks a few times before he fully realizes what Sun had just said.

SATURN
(getting up, speaking louder so Sun can hear)
Sorry, Sun!
(now normal conversational tone)
Bye, Jupiter! I loved the book!

JUPITER
(smiling)
Goodbye, Saturn! See you later!

Jupiter watches as Saturn floats back to his orbit off screen.

Once Saturn is fully off screen, Jupiter returns to his orbit. He watches thoughtfully as some of the ROCKY PLANETS are sleeping while PROTO-EARTH and MARS are having inaudible conversation in their orbits. A small, weak gravity tugs at him and a quiet voice calls to him.

SOMEONE (O.S)
Excuse me..!

JUPITER’S POV

Jupiter’s eyes widen and he looks around. The gravity tugs at him again and he glances down to the source. A small celestial, cratered heavily and dark, curiously looks up to him.

CAMERA returns to normal third person and shows Jupiter shocked, jaw dropped.

MOON
(calling out)
I um… think I’m your moon, sir.

Jupiter just stares at the MOON with shock for a couple moments. The moon shifts uncomfortably, her gaze faltering eye contact until Jupiter clears his throat.

JUPITER
I, uh… I’m sorry. I just…
(coughs awkwardly once)
You’re… the first moon that’s ever woken up. Oh, I should mention, my name’s Jupiter.

Jupiter is clearly fascinated by the Moon. He carefully holds her up with his gravity until they are at eye level.

JUPITER
You have lots of craters for being so young and small… Oh, have I hurt you? My gravity is very strong, and we’re by the asteroid belt, and— ah, I’m— you must be uncomfortable,

A beat of pause passes and Jupiter lets the Moon down a little.

JUPITER (CONT’D)
and, stars, I’m rambling, sorry.

A small smile appears on the Moon’s face.

MOON
(with genuineness)
It’s alright, I’m not uncomfortable. …But I don’t remember where the craters came from.

JUPITER
When did you wake up?

MOON
(shrugs)
I woke up before that other planet came by. I wanted to talk to you but then you started talking to them first.

JUPITER
(sheepishly)
Ah, my apologies. You’re just so small, even smaller than the Rocky Planets.

MOON
The ‘Rocky Planets’?

JUPITER
Erm, those little guys over there past the Asteroid Belt.

CAMERA follows the moon’s gaze. All the Rocky Planets are awake now. All dialogue is inaudible. MERCURY has joined Mars and Proto-Earth’s game in throwing asteroids at each other. VENUS and THEIA are talking in the middle point between their orbits, Theia holding a notepad and pen. CAMERA soon returns to Jupiter and the Moon.

JUPITER (CONT’D)

Would you like to meet them? Sun really loves introducing everyone to each other once those little guys woke up.

MOON

(shyly)

Oh, no… not really… but thank you.

JUPITER

That’s alright, no rush. I guess they can be pretty intimidating as well. Oh, but about those craters, they must have formed by asteroid impacts from the Asteroid Belt. I should have protected you better from them, but you orbit the farthest from me out of the other major moons, about 1,168,000 miles away, or 1,880,000 kilometers. The impacts don’t hurt, do they?

MOON
No, not really…

The Moon trails off as she is still fascinated by Jupiter’s knowledge and care. However, such knowledge got her thinking.

MOON
I’m the first moon, right?

JUPITER
The first to form and the first to wake up, correct.

MOON
So… Do moons get names too?

JUPITER
Ah, yes! How could I have forgotten to name you! How does…

Jupiter holds her close once more. He inspects her as he thinks of a fitting name for her. The right name comes to him abruptly, saying it out loud just as it comes to mind.

JUPITER (CONT’D)
Callisto. How does that sound for you?

CALLISTO
(hums, looking down)
Callisto…
(voice quiet)
I like it.

JUPITER
(smile apparent in voice)
Then welcome to the Solar System, Callisto.

kudos and comments super duper appreciated ^_^ 💖
