For Naru, Mai was one of those unique and singular individuals. Demonstrating it in the joy she transmitted, in the skills she possessed, in the smile she emitted. She was one of those people who sneak into your heart and you can't get them to leave.
She stays there... forever.
Mai was one of a kind, he knew he wouldn't find another person like her, at least in this life.
There wouldn't be another who would confront him, challenge him, and say what they think about his person. It would be difficult to also find a being who cares more than themselves and is willing to take physical risks for her and whose heart races when he sees her even if she is not in danger.
She was like an endangered species, that's why he had to protect her; he wasn't going to let her become extinct, disappear or belong to someone else.
Because she - even if she didn't know it yet - was his, that unique and singular person who had taken possession of his heart.
