Chapter 1: Opening Night (And Boy, What an Opener)
Chapter Text
7:02 PM. The crowd’s excited screams were hushed to a dull din as the lights came on. Tonight, the opening show for the Golden Group Award– a new award show of three years given to the absolute best bands across the world– was going to have the biggest long-time and upcoming names. There was a sea of attendees in the stadium, all excited to hear the best songs from their favorite groups from across the world.
Night One of Golden Group was always held as an introduction to new bands to the competition, as far as everyone was aware. Established groups that were already nominated in previous years weren’t put on until the next two days, just to ensure there was a fair lineup.
…At least that was what you were told when your band was nominated.
It wasn’t technically “your” band anymore. DoubleCRUSH used to be your passion project as a teenager; a music group with a rebellious disposition and hard-hitting lyrics that you had built from the ground up. Your old high school friends were the original bandmates, and you were the lead singer and songwriter.
But things changed. While you still wanted to make music that sent a message… you couldn’t do it. At least not from the front seat.
Now here you stood, backstage at a lavish international competition, managing a bilingual alt band that ended up skyrocketing in popularity. It felt like a fever dream. You paced around backstage, listening to the chatter between the bandmates.
“We are soooo not going to win this. Nobody is gonna give a shit about us compared to all these super-famous bands. Why’d we accept the invitation anyways? We’re gonna embarrass ourselves, dude…” Scarlet, the lead singer, blew her hair out of her face with an exasperated puff of air.
“Oh my god, you are always so negative! We’re not gonna embarrass ourselves. Our music slaps. By the way, does my hair look okay…?” the drummer Raven remarked. She twirled a strand of her perfectly split-dyed hair around her finger.
“Ugh, your hair always looks good. Don’t be a showoff.”
The keyboardist, Parker, put a hand on both of their shoulders. “If you guys talk about losing, you’re gonna jinx us. You really don’t have any faith in yourself? Or in us? Shame.”
“Plus,” the guitarist, Jae, piped up, “even if we totally blow it… we’re not gonna totally blow it.”
Scarlet scrunched her nose up. “What the fuck does that mean?”
“It means that even if we lose the competition– like, even if we come in last place– we’ve probably got a good handful of fans backing us up out there. And we’ll probably make even more. We just have to do our best.”
Overhearing the encouragement they were giving each other could have brought you to tears. Despite the tone of DoubleCRUSH’s songs, there was always positivity flowing between the bandmates in waves. You taught them well.
“Okay, okay, we’ll be on in a few. First act of tonight’s show, whew…” you announce, getting their attention. “I know you guys can pull this off. ‘Scrap-Heap Reject’ netted 82 million streams so far. Everyone loves you guys. And I do too.”
Everyone smiled pleasantly, except for Scarlet, who blushed fervently and turned her head away. “ Gawd , auntie, you’re such a sap…” After a moment, though, she cracked a grin. “We love you too. We’re gonna make you goddamn proud.”
You nodded, a confident smile tugging at your lips. “Alright, are you ready?”
“We’re SO ready!!!”
Just as you were basking in the anticipation, a staff member shuffled up to you with a nervous look. “Umm, Ms. Y/N? We’ve got a bit of a problem…”
Your eyes widened, and you leaned over the short woman, your voice a low hiss.
“ What . Problem . We’re supposed to be on at 15.”
The woman looked even more nervous. “Umm, well, that’s exactly the problem. You’re… not.”
You stood up straight, balling your hands into fists. It took all your willpower not to scream so loud the entire stadium would hear. A few deep breaths later, you returned your voice to a calm, collected tone. “What do you mean, we’re not ?”
“I mean… well… the collaborators of the event have decided last-minute to switch the first and last acts for tonight. Just due to some technicalities.” She passed a pink paper to you with slightly trembling hands.
Sure enough, this updated set list had a few of the acts switch places in the lineup, including the first and last slots. Now DoubleCRUSH was bumped to the very last slot, and placed at the top was some idol group named… Huntr/x?
“The K-pop group? They’re not even technically a band!” you protested, shoving the paper into the staff member’s shaky grip. She shrank back, a bead of sweat rolling down her cheek. “Yes… but- but! Golden Group is for group musicians, not just bands. Idol groups with only singers also count. And Huntr/x is… well, very famous.”
You let out a long, loooong, drawn-out sigh. “What… What do the people in charge of this event think they’re pulling even letting them perform on opening night ?! They’re not even a new group!”
“Yes, but by technicality, they’ve only accepted a nomination this year… First-year is still first-year, even if this isn’t their first year as a group. And opening night of Golden Group is always reserved for–”
“–for first years. Yes. I know.” You rubbed the bridge of your nose. “And why did they want to switch the lineup again?”
“It was the collaborators’ decision. They figured that, since Huntr/x is so famous, they should be the opening act. It hooks people in, that’s what I heard.”
That sounded a little stupid. Hypothetically, if a third of those concert attendees were there to see Huntr/x, then more than likely, they wouldn’t stick around to see the rest of the newer nominees. And that’d be a third of the in-person audience lost. You were apparently much smarter than the collaborators of this international music event, yet you decided for courtesy’s sake to keep that to yourself. “Ah… I see.”
You turned away from the staff member, approaching your band with a pensive expression. They looked so hyped for the opener, it was going to break their hearts to have to tell them the news… but then again, they were grown adults, and this wasn’t a cancellation, just a rescheduling. Still, you felt a little guilty as you called their attention.
“Guys? It seems like there’s been a change of plans.”
Before you could even say anything else, Raven immediately threw her head back, bawling. “ARE WE GETTING KICKED OFF THE LINEUPPPP?!”
“Oh, hon, no! We’re not getting kicked off…!” You rush to her side, patting her back. “Why are you looking up like that, you’re gonna hurt your neck…”
“Idonwannaruinmymascaraaaaah…” she blabbered.
“Hey, come on, don’t worry about the mascara. Now you’ve got plenty of time to fix it. Come on everybody, let’s go back to the dressing rooms.”
“What do you mean, ‘plenty of time’? I don’t get it, if we’re not getting kicked off, what happened?” Jae asked.
“The… first and last acts got switched. Huntr/x is going to be the opening act.”
“HUNTR/X?!” all four gasped in unison.
Raven’s tears dried up immediately, delving into a squealy, girlish rant. “You mean the coolest K-pop group to ever exist?! Switched places with us?! I can’t believe it… do you think we’ll get consolation autographs? I neeeeeed an autograph from Zoey. She, like, totally inspired my current hairstyle! And my current EVERYTHING!!”
“Shhh. Yeah, they’re badass, but they totally took our opening spot!” Scarlet huffed. “Auntie, why can’t you just go tell them to, I dunno, not take our opening spot?”
You threw your hands up in exasperation. “Oh, the most famous K-pop girl group in the world took our opening slot, let me just go over there and kindly ask their manager for our slot back. That’ll make us all look awful!”
“That’s a great idea!” Scarlet grinned. “Go tell their manager off for accepting that set list change!”
“Honey, I can’t do that, I’ll get us kicked from the–”
“Then I’ll do it myself!” She immediately rushed off in the other direction. It was clear by the look on her face that she wasn’t planning a kind conversation.
“Scarlet, NO !” You took off after her, ducking and dodging around the various backstage staff and other waiting performers. How is this girl so fast…?! You knew your niece had a short temper, but chewing out a group’s manager? Especially the manager of such an affluent K-pop group? This girl was going to get her own band blacklisted from the industry with just a few words!
“Scarlet, you come back here right now, I’m serious!!!” you pant, letting out little apologies for everyone you had to push past in order to catch up. “You are twenty-four years old, this is childish! Get over here now!!!”
She was already striding up to the unassuming Huntr/x manager, who had his back turned as he was ushering the group out to the stage. You heard cheers erupt from the full stadium. You slowed to a stop, relieved that at least there was nothing to be done.
…Though that didn’t stop Scarlet, and you found that out as a small crowd of staff and other performers crowded around, arguing aloud as a string of curses and insults could be heard spewing in your niece’s voice.
“You fucking prick! I can’t believe you took up the offer to switch our group’s spots! You rich dickwads really think you can get away with doing anything that fucks with the little guys don’t you?! Huh?! Say something, you shithead!!!”
Mortified, you shove through the onlookers to get a look at the sight: sure enough, Scarlet has this man by the shirt collar, shaking him around while he looks absolutely terrified.
“Scarlet Amy Anderson! What the fuck are you doing ?! Let go of him!!!” You stomp forward, slapping the back of her head. “Do you not realize you’re making a fool of yourself?! This man had nothing to do with the schedule lineup! It was all the collaborators’ dumb idea for a show hook! Now let him go before I drop us out of this show! Let him go now!!”
Scarlet’s face grew, appropriately, a dark shade of scarlet, be it from rage or humiliation or both. She slowly, hesitantly, released the manager’s collar and backed away. “Okay. Okay. ‘m fucking backing off…”
As she shamefully ducked behind you for protection, you were the one left standing face-to-face with Huntr/x’s very shaken manager.
From the first glance, you found it hard to peel your gaze from this guy. Slightly shorter than you, he seemed even more so since he was shrunken in on himself– a bit out of fear that Scarlet might jump out from behind you for a second round of attacks. Still, he had quite a soft look to him, rounded face and chubby physique. You almost felt your own cheeks turning scarlet from looking at him.
“Umm…” you start, but the words don’t quite make it out the first time, so you clear your throat and try again. “Ahem… I… I deeply, deeply apologize on behalf of my niece. We– she – did not mean for that little outburst. She was very excited for DoubleCRUSH to be the opening act, and got way too worked up over the schedule change. I’m certainly not condoning that behavior,” you give a stern glance over your shoulder at Scarlet, “and she will do better in the future. Now, Scarlet, I want you to apologize to…” You gaze back at the man, tilting your head slightly. “...what’s your name, sir?”
Without relaxing from his defensive pose (was he expecting her to bite him or something?) he smiled nervously and spoke up.
“...Bobby.”
You bring Scarlet back in front of you. “Fantastic. Scarlet, apologize to Mr. Bobby. And be sincere.” you say with a snap.
Scarlet shuffled her foot against the ground, cheeks burning with shame. “Right… I apologize, Mr. Bobby. I didn’t mean to hurt you… physically or emotionally. And I understand it wasn’t your fault our band got placed at the end of the fucking lineup… And I guess you aren’t a prick… or a dickwad… or a shithead…”
You give the back of her head another slap. “Properly!”
“Alright, alright!” she snarls, rubbing the back of her head. “I’m sorry for calling you nasty names. I shouldn’t have blown up in your face, sir. Please don’t sue me or my aunt.”
Bobby slowly unfurled from his crumpled position, his full height still not reaching yours. A polite, yet hesitant, smile graced his features. “Right… Well, thank you, Miss Scarlet. I… really wasn’t planning on suing you. But I accept the apology. We’re sorry for accidentally taking your spot on the lineup. It was just what the collaborators requested.”
Scarlet let out a grumpy huff, but didn’t say anything else. She turned on her heel and shuffled away. “I’m going back to the dressing room. Lemme know when we’re on.”
Once she was gone, the small crowd of nosy bystanders quickly scattered, leaving you and Bobby awkwardly standing in front of each other.
“So… she’s your niece, huh?”
“What?” Still flustered from the encounter and dealing with Scarlet’s outburst, you took a long moment to process that Bobby was speaking to you again. “Oh. Y-yes. Scarlet’s my niece. God, I’m awfully sorry she went nuts like that. I promise I taught her way better than that!”
Bobby let out a sigh, rubbing the back of his neck with a hand. “Wow. She’s… definitely passionate. And scary. Very, very scary. I thought she was going to tackle me.”
You gasped softly in realization, glancing at his face and neck. “Oh my god, I’m so rude! Are you okay? She didn’t, like, actually hurt you, did she?”
His cheeks pricked with blush, and he waved a dismissive hand at you. “Oh, no no! She didn’t… I mean, she scared me, but she didn’t actually try to hurt me.”
“Good. What a little shit… I can’t tell you how mortified I am to–”
“Ooh, they’re singing my favorite part!” Bobby suddenly cut you off and turned towards the curtain, where Huntr/x was belting their song to the ecstatic crowd on the other side. He bounced a bit to the music, copying the moves of that dance that you’ve seen the group perform before. When his favorite part was over, he returned his attention to you. “Sorry, sorry, I’m just so proud of them! I’ve always gotta be tuned in to my favorite parts…”
You smiled, endeared by his obvious love for the girls. “Aww, how sweet. Y’know, you seem like you really love them.”
“Oh, don’t even mention it. I’d do anything for my girls. At this point they’re like family to me…” He gave you a warmer smile. “Though I guess you can relate to that. I can’t imagine how Scarlet feels when her manager is her aunt!”
You chuckled softly, shaking your head. “Oh, tell me about it. She hates how naggy I am, but I believe in my heart that she could never replace me. And I love the rest of them too. All of them are my sweeties.”
You both stood there in blissful silence as the song wrapped up, the roar of a loving audience outside the curtain. Bobby then sprung to attention, calling out to a few backstage staff. “Okay! We’re gonna need water and damp cloths upfront for the girls! Don’t make them wait!”
“Uh! Hey, by the way,” you piped up, grabbing his attention for one more moment. “It was really nice to meet you! I’m really embarrassed that it was because of Scarlet doing something stupid, but I’m happy anyways!” You tentatively extended a hand, as if worried he’d reject the gesture.
Instead, Bobby beamed and gave you a handshake. “Don’t worry about it! She only made me fear for my safety for about fifteen seconds. It was nice to meet you too!”
And with that, you both returned to your tasks, with Bobby rushing to greet Huntr/x backstage and you going to prepare your band for their closing spot.
The rest of the night was an exhilarating, nerve-wracking blur. Golden Group went off without a hitch, and you had managed to get everyone in the mood to perform the closer. Scarlet didn’t have another outburst, Raven got her mascara fixed, and the stadium cheered as DoubleCRUSH brought opening night to a seamless close.
But throughout all of this, the interaction you had with that manager was the thing that stuck in your head the most. It was as if you– no, there’s no way you had immediately fallen head over heels for that guy. It was a passing attraction at most… but god, was he attractive. Cute-attractive, but attractive nonetheless. You silently cursed yourself for not attempting to get his number or something– but with a personality, occupation, and looks like his… he was surely taken anyway. Either that, or he surely wanted nothing to do with some simple alt band manager.
You doubted you’d ever even get to meet him again…
Chapter 2: Takes One to Know One
Notes:
I wrote the first two chapters together, so don't expect the rest of this to release as quickly... I initially tried to write this as slow burn, but I got way too excited to get to the cute romantic parts, so now it's very much the opposite of that.
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
“WE MADE THE FINALS?!?!”
The whole band was abuzz with excitement at the news. Somehow, somehow , DoubleCRUSH had cracked the top twenty and became finalists. You’d never been prouder.
“Yes, we’re in the top twenty. The finals will be held in Los Angeles, so let’s all be prepared to have a nice long rest-up at the hotel.” You handed them the gilded letter confirming the band’s placement.
“Woah! Complimentary, all-expenses paid stay at a high-end hotel?!” Raven screeched. “We’re really on our way, aren’t we! DoubleCRUSH is gonna go down in history!”
“Can you imagine how nice those beds must feel…?” Jae gushed, sighing dreamily just thinking about it. “I’m gonna be so well-rested for that final show.”
“Not to mention complimentary drinks. Who else wants to abuse the minibar?”
“Screw the minibar, Scarlet. They’ll probably have a nice bottle of champagne ready for us. We’re Golden Group finalists .” Parker remarked.
“Alright, I know you’re all excited, but this doesn’t mean you can slack off with practicing,” you reminded them. “Making the finals means we’ve got to bring our A-game. What song are we going to be performing for the show?”
The bandmates paused, mulling over the options from their recently released album.
“Ooh, ooh, definitely ‘Candy Boy’! We’ve practiced it a lot but haven’t gotten to perform it for any shows!” Raven suggested.
“Or maybe ‘Error Girl’.” Scarlet added. “We’ve always wanted to do the crazy lighting effects on a stage.”
Jae suddenly gasped, putting in his suggestion. “‘Candy Boy’ is actually perfect! It sounds badass, and it has a lot of solo segments and our backing lyrics! It’ll give us all a chance to showcase our individual musical specialties!”
Everyone nodded in agreement, voicing approval of the decision.
“Okay, that’s the one we’ll perform. I hope everyone’s ready to blow that audience away.” You remarked confidently.
Everyone was stoked on the flight to LA, so much that the promised ‘rest’ that they had coveted was almost impossible with how excited everyone was to get to the hotel. From the moment they set foot in the lobby, they scrambled around like children on sugar highs.
“It’s so huuuuuge in here! And the wallpaper is so elegant it’s tacky!”
“Oh my god, they’ve got a bar! I fucking knew it! This is the life…”
“Hey, they left us a gift basket with fancy lotions and chocolates…! Eugh, they taste like rosewater…”
It was very late before they finally decided to retire for the night. You managed to corral the rowdy young adults into their lavish hotel room and wave them goodnight. Rather than going to bed yourself, you realized that you had to review some paperwork, so you decided to just hang out in the hotel’s calm, elegant lobby.
Soft music played as visitors and concierges shuffled about from here to there, the soft sounds of steps and the dull rolling of luggage carts being the only noise to punctuate the serenity. You sat in one of the velvety seats, legs crossed as you sorted through the stack of papers.
The serenity was then immediately ended when a quiet chatter started up throughout the lobby. Some very important guests had just entered.
The three women stepped in, their aura palpable. Dressed to the nines in casual– yet clearly expensive– clothing, was Huntr/x. You tilted your head up from your work, eyes wide and shining. Not from getting to see the girls up close, no no. You were looking for that manager that was always right behind them…
“Alright, let’s get that room key! It’s been a long day…” Out from behind them appeared no other than Bobby. You ducked your head back down when he passed you, hoping you wouldn’t be recognized… or maybe just too shy to actually know what to say if he did? Either way, he luckily didn’t seem to even notice you as he passed.
He approached the desk, unable to be heard from here but definitely signing in with the concierge. A few people were whispering excitedly at the sight of the K-pop group standing so casually in the lobby, while the girls looked quite tired.
“I’m so excited for the finals! We’re gonna blow this show out of the water!” the shortest one squealed, seemingly barely containing her excitement despite her exhaustion.
The tallest one let out a yawn, rubbing her tired eyes. “Zoey, of course we are. We’ve never not blown everyone away. I don’t really wanna care about it right now when we’re minutes away from the coziest beds ever.”
“Right? I’m so tiredddd. And we earned a good night’s rest.” agreed the one standing between them, who had the longest hair you’d ever seen.
It wasn’t like you were out of the loop, but if you were being honest, you didn’t really know shit about Huntr/x. You knew they were, like, the most famous and most wealthy K-pop group, and you knew that Raven was obsessed with them. But she had never filled you in on their dynamics or even names, so right now you felt like a grandma being shown an iPhone for the first time.
You listened to them converse for a few more minutes before you suddenly saw a telltale bright-red head of hair coming down the hall. Oh god. Not now.
Scarlet was puttering out to the lobby, looking half-sleepy and half-drunk. You knew that her seeing Bobby would probably send her on another rant in this state. But was it worth jumping up and announcing your presence to the man you had already encountered so embarrassingly, especially now that you were in front of the idols themselves?
You froze in place, mentally cycling through worst-case scenarios. Scarlet’s drunk enough to remember her issue with Bobby and try to fight him again… she gets us kicked out of the hotel… we have to drop out of the show… these kids lose that ticket to stardom they’ve worked so hard for… that I’VE worked so hard to give them…!
But if you were to just jump up and tell her off again… Oh. What did it matter? It would happen either way. At least stopping her from even seeing his face in her trashed state would keep the peace in this quiet lobby. Shrugging off your nerves, you jump up from your chair and rush to Scarlet’s side.
“Sweetie, did you seriously drink at this time of night? You’re gonna have such a bad hangover!” You block her view from Bobby and Huntr/x, who all subtly glance in the direction of the commotion.
“Ughhh… that’s why I was looking for you… I think I need ibuprofen…” Scarlet murmured.
“Okay, okay, we’ll get you ibuprofen. You need to drink water, too. Where’s the others? Did you wander down here all alone? You know that’s not safe when you’re drunk in an unfamiliar place. And you’ll get us in trouble…”
She leans into your arms, seeming more tired now than anything. “Mmmnh… ‘m tired…”
“I know, hon. Go to… go to bed.” From the hallway comes the other bandmates, appearing at various degrees of concern and exhaustion.
“Scarletttt, you can’t wander out like this. Public intoxication!”
“Yah, come back to bed and–” Raven’s attention was diverted to the idols standing not too far away, confusion etched into their faces at the odd commotion. “Oh. My. Gosh!” She scurried over to Huntr/x, eyes glittering.
“Hi, hi, haiiiiii! I’m such a big fan! You guys are literally my inspiration! Especially you, Zoey! I’m, like, so excited to be performing in the finals with you all! Seriously, my best goes out to you girls!!! Squeeeeee!!”
The trio gave her sweet smiles despite their clear fatigue, Zoey especially looking flattered. “Oh my gosh, thank you. That’s such an honor. And hey, you made the finals for Golden Group too? What’s your band name?”
“DoubleCRUSH!” she proclaimed, loud enough to grab the attention of Bobby, who immediately turned his gaze from Raven to you while you were fussing over Scarlet.
“Aha! I knew I recognized you from somewhere!”
You turned red immediately, having been caught. You had sort of hoped that if you ever ran into him again, it wouldn’t be while doting on the bandmates. For the second time. “Oh… Mr. Bobby… yeeeeees, it’s me.”
You gesture for the others to take Scarlet back to the hotel room, but before you can do that, the tallest Huntr/x member chimes in.
“Hey, isn’t that the name of the band that we switched with during opening night? The one with the hothead that almost beat the shit out of Bobby?”
“Oh my gosh, the very same! That’s a crazy coincidence!” Zoey remarked. “They seem way more chill than I was expecting. We didn’t even get a chance to see you guys perform that night!”
You let out a long sigh of exasperation. “Well, that’s a shame. I at least hope you got to hear it. They did such a good job!”
“Oh, we heard it while we were backstage. You sang that metal song, didn’t you?” the middle one asked. “It sounded like the audience ate it up. It’s no wonder you’re finalists.”
Raven beamed, practically starry-eyed. It seemed like she was about to pass out from sheer exhilaration. “OMG. You… really think our music is good? Puh-leeeeease tell us you’ll stay to listen to us during finals night! It would be the biggest honor of our career!!!”
“Well… we kind of have to, it’s finals night…”
Raven held back what was likely a crystal-shattering scream of excitement. “...You. Three. Are. Angels. I’ll never forget this encounter as long as I live !!!”
With that, she twirled around and then gleefully skipped back down the hall. “Thank you, Huntr/x! Goodnight! Rest well! Eeeeee!!”
“Wow. I think that was the calmest fan encounter we’ve ever had.” the tall one snorted. You ushered the rest of your band down the hallway, giving them hushed goodbyes. Once they disappeared around a corner, you let out the longest sigh you had in quite a while.
“My god. I’m so sorry. It seems like every encounter I’m going to have with you people is going to be an awkward one, huh?” Despite this, neither the girls nor Bobby seemed the least bit uncomfortable with the previous encounter.
“Oh my gosh, no, don’t worry about it! We’ve met worse fans.” Zoey shrugged.
“Absolutely. Really weird ones, too.” the middle one remarked.
“Complete lunatics.” the tall one scoffed. “But what do you expect from fame like ours? Comes with the job.”
You shuffled awkwardly for a moment, before breaking the silence. “Of course, you can tell that Raven is a big fan of your work. Myself, personally, I don’t think I ever picked up on anything about you girls. Except for Zoey’s name, since she never shuts up about how you’re her inspiration.”
Zoey smiled again, and your comment prompted Bobby to approach the girls’ side. “Oh? Then let me introduce you! This is Rumi, and this is Mira.” He gestured towards the middle girl and tallest girl respectively, who both gave a respectful bow of their heads.
“Oh, well, it’s very nice to meet you! I’m DoubleCRUSH’s manager, Ms. Y/N. It’s quite an honor to be meeting celebrities in such a casual setting…” you respond, bowing your head as well. “I shouldn’t be making small talk though, let me spare the chit-chat so you ladies can get to your room! You look exhausted.”
All three girls immediately dropped the polite smiles, their faces drooping with fatigue. “Yes, pleeeeeease. I’ve never been so excited to crash in a hotel bed.” Rumi groaned.
Bobby twirled the keyring around his finger. “Well, let’s get you girls to your room! You need plenty of sleep for the show… It was nice talking to you again, Y/N!”
“Right! And you as well…” You watched him lead the exhausted idols down the hallway, and once they were gone you slumped back into the seat, rubbing your temples. I can’t believe this is the SECOND time I’ve talked to him… and it’s been with the kids in arm’s reach! I must look like a total drag…
You picked up your small pile of paperwork and your pen, once again sifting through all the information and legal junk for the competition. As the time ticked on, you wished it wasn’t too late at night to sensibly knock back a coffee and breeze through your work… maybe you could settle for a caramel affogato…
“Y/N?”
You jolted, startled out of a tired spell as you glanced up. “Oh, Bobby… what are you doing here?”
He folded his hands behind him, rocking back on his heels. “Well, the girls are doing their nighttime routines, and since they don’t need me right now I thought I would have some free time… but, y’know, noticing you in here, I realized I also have some papers to go through. You wouldn’t mind if I sat with you, right? I won’t bother you or anything… But if you want to talk, I won’t mind…”
You raised an eyebrow. He was considerably awkward in his approach, but it almost seemed like a backwards offer to chat.
“Bobby… are you wanting to hang out with me?”
He blushed with embarrassment. “Well. Umm. We might as well. What other time would two managers get a chance to… talk privately?”
“...Isn’t this sort of a conflict of interest for you?”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“I mean… we’re managing rivaling groups. In a music competition. For a trophy. You really don’t think it’s awkward?”
He shrugged, giving you a lopsided smile. “...Well, we’re not working right now…”
That was true, you had to admit. Wait, why were you trying to deny this anyway? This was exactly what you wanted, and exactly what you were thinking wouldn’t ever happen. Yet it was happening right now, and here you were, mentally cycling through every reason it shouldn’t. “Right. I… I would love that. Yes, let’s chat.”
He smiled wider, the grin crinkling his eyes. “Great! Let me just get my paperwork and I’ll be right back.”
He returned a few minutes later with a stack of papers, and settled comfortably in the chair beside you with a sigh. “Whew. It’s nice to get to sit down… So. Tell me about yourself?”
“Oh, right. Well…” You thought about what would be an interesting enough tidbit for your new acquaintance. “I used to be a singer myself, y’know.”
“Oh, really?”
“Yeah. I was actually the founder of DoubleCRUSH before it became famous. After a while I realized that it wasn’t fit for my voice, and my high school friends all moved on to different careers. But rather than give up, I decided to make my dreams come true in a different way.”
Bobby’s eyes widened. Fully distracted from his papers, he leaned in on the chair’s arm, his soft cheek perched in his palm. “ You were the original singer? Wow.”
His intrigue makes you glance away, a faint pink staining your cheeks. “Uh-huh. When my niece dropped out of high school and her mom kicked her out, I was the one who saw potential in her. She isn’t a bad kid. She never was… she just needed to aim her passion somewhere else. And she found it in being a singer. I mean, my vocals were fine… but hers? Well, you’ve heard them. She’s born to be a star.”
You look back, seeing his eyes have gotten a little misty. “That’s amazing. You put so much faith into your niece… and she’s really making you proud. That’s how I feel about my girls! They may not be related to me, but they sure feel like it.”
“Right? And it’s like… no matter where this career takes them, you want nothing more than to see them succeed.”
“Exactly! And when something goes wrong or they don’t get along, you kinda want to blame yourself!”
“Oh my god, exactly!”
You both paused, tearing up a bit from your passionate discussion. It’s as if the two of you were on the exact same wavelength when it came to the groups you managed; whether or not they were blood related, you treated them like your kin.
“Sorry, I’m getting all emotional…” you apologize, wiping the moisture from your eyes with your sleeve.
“Yeah, don’t worry, so am I…!” Bobby sniffled. “Ah… It’s really great to know I’m not alone in that. Wanna know a secret? I was actually an idol trainee in my younger years. Before I became a manager.”
“You? Really? Gosh, I can’t imagine…” You take another glance at his soft face, your blush returning. “Well, I mean, I can totally imagine it. B-but at the same time! What are the odds we both started out so similarly…”
Bobby chuckled softly. “I know. But yeah, I was an idol trainee… I learned firsthand just how brutal idol managers can be. The excessive training, the strict diets, the hectic schedules… not to mention how cold they were. You couldn’t cry, couldn’t be sick, couldn’t be stressed. My manager put us through hell. It was less than a year before I quit.”
“Yikes…” You cringed at the thought of what he must have gone through as a trainee. Looking at the softened, casual, smiley man before you, you felt a pang of guilt at the very idea of someone pushing him so hard. “So that’s why you became a manager yourself? To give the girls more than you got?”
He nodded. “Exactly. My girls deserve the best. Make sure they’re eating enough, that they get to rest when they need it, that they want for nothing.”
“...You are an absolute angel , Bobby,” you remark, a smile tugging at your lips. “Never in my life have I heard of an idol group manager being so supportive. You’re practically their dad!”
As if on cue, his cheeks reddened again. “Pssh. Oh… I get that a lot. You won’t believe how often someone’s gotten a glimpse of me around the girls and posted it with something like that. That I’m such a nice manager, that I’m a total father figure… It’s not about the gratification, but knowing that I’m such a good influence is… well, it’s more than a little flattering, I guess.”
“And so modest! Gosh, whoever you’re with definitely struck gold with you.”
He suddenly looked a little coy, glancing away from you. “Well… I’m not really in a relationship right now.”
“Not in a relationship?” You gaped at him. “How? You’re the goddamn sweetest man I’ve ever spoken to! And you’ve got such a fine career!”
“I guess I just… haven’t gotten lucky yet. And I’ve definitely let myself go since I was in idol training…”
“There’s no way you were hotter back then than you are now.” you remarked firmly. But wait, fuck… that means you just implied that you think he’s hot. Which is true, but you can’t let him know that! “I mean… objectively! Objectively I don’t see the issue… you look good right now. I mean, currently… yeah.”
Bobby raised an eyebrow, the rosiness in his round cheeks returning full force. “Hot…?”
You splutter, stumbling over your words. “What I meant to say… umm… It’s just that you’re– like– you’re certainly not ugly! Well, that’s an understatement, you look great, it’s–” You groan, burying your face in your hands. “Just hush! I don’t know what I’m saying…”
“Well, uhh… If you really think I’m hot, you really should have seen me in my idol era. I was lean and mean…” he sighed, seemingly reminiscing.
“I don’t think I want to. The only picture of you I want in my head is the one I’m looking at right now.”
He looked you right in the eyes, his mouth falling open a tiny bit. “... Wow . That was… way too romantic. Are you sure you don’t have a tiny crush on me or something?”
“No!!! I mean… Don't tease me! I’m just trying to be nice. It would be mean if I told you I’d rather envision you as a toned heartthrob than how you look currently, wouldn’t it?” you huff, folding your arms.
“Ah, that’s true. Well, thank you for being so nice.”
“You’re welcome… now do your stupid paperwork or something!”
You sat in comfortable silence for the rest of the night, working through paper after paper and exchanging the occasional glance between each other. You couldn’t believe it… were you actually pulling? No way, it was way too early to tell, but… just maybe.
Notes:
Yes, I'm clinging to the headcanon that other people have shared, that Bobby used to be an idol before becoming Huntr/x's manager. It just makes so much sense, doesn't it? Also, I'm really trying to balance out Y/N's speech so that it's realistically awkward, but also not stereotypical Y/N-type awkward. Let me know if she's coming off as too cringe.
Chapter Text
Tomorrow was the night of the finals. The theater down the road from the hotel was reserving space for the finalists to practice, and at that moment you were leading the band through the last few rehearsals of the day.
“Okay, let’s go again, from the top. Five, six, seven, eight!”
Raven started with the beat, Parker began playing the backing instrumental on his keyboard’s sound board, and Jae strummed his electric guitar. Scarlet took a deep breath, and began to sing.
Raspberry blazer, honeyed lips and chocolate eyes
His words are sweet like sugar but his core is rotten lies
You think you’ve seen it all?
I know a thing or two
He’s a superficial suck-up that won’t take a “no” from you!
Sorry, he’s too sweet
Say he’s good enough to eat
And your mother says he’s a good kid
“That boy is such a treat!”
But like a candy-coated cavity, his heart
Is sweet enough to lead you and then leave you in the dark!
The song went smoothly, and by the end you clapped for them. “Very, very good! This is gonna be the song that clears, I know it. And it’s good messaging too. Never hook up with a hot guy with a bad history.”
“Too late, I did once. It’s how I ended up trying coke for the first time.” Scarlet snorted.
“Scarlet…”
“At least you have better judgment than us, Y/N. You know how to pick ‘em,” Jae said, a faint smirk pulling at the corner of his lip. “After all, you clearly have the hots for Huntr/x’s manager. He seems like the best choice you could make.”
You felt your face heat up at the mention of Bobby. “Hey! How do you figure that?”
“Well, Scarlet told me that when you were making her apologize to him at the opening show, you were all red and awkward.”
“That was because she was embarrassing us, not because I like him!”
“Oh? And what about when you were flirting with him in the hotel lobby after you sent us to bed?” he quirked an eyebrow at you.
“What?! Did you see that? You were spying on me?! I mean… no, that was not flirting! We were just having a chat. A casual chat between managers.”
“...Yeah, sure you were.” The others exchanged knowing glances. You were mentally kicking yourself for being so obvious.
“Okay, enough chit-chat. Let’s get everything packed up and then break for lunch! We need to clear the stage for the next group’s rehearsals.” You helped them put their instruments and mics away, ushering them out of the studio. Everything was done for the day, and the kids could just relax and take the afternoon off, excited for tomorrow night…
But you discreetly slipped back into the theater.
You had read the list of reserved timeslots for the stage usage, and by some ungodly coincidence, Huntr/x was the next coming in for rehearsals. Wouldn’t it be fun to just hide away and pretend to stumble onto… No. No! What were you thinking? You were going to come off as such a creep if you hung around just to pop out and talk to him again. Come on, girl, just ask to talk to him during the rehearsal! It’s not like he’ll turn you down, he already knows you!
Your thoughts were interrupted by the backstage doors opening, the sound of familiar voices chattering. You ducked into one of the theater seats, kicking your legs up and pretending like you were working on some last-minute documents. In reality, you were watching them set up for the show– sorry, you weren’t watching them. You were waiting to get a glimpse of him .
It didn’t take long before you were noticed. “Oh, we’ve got an audience,” Rumi remarked, and when you glanced up from your fake work she was pointing to you.
You swiftly stood up, stuffing that paper into your pocket and giving a smile. “Sorry, don’t mind me! I was just hanging back, taking care of stuff. The band already headed back to the hotel.”
Bobby appeared from behind the curtain, his expression eager. “Y/N! You’re everywhere, aren’t you?” It seemed like he was expecting your presence now, and he surely didn’t seem upset about that. “Wanna watch the rehearsals? I don’t think the girls mind if you stick around.”
“Not at all!” “Yeah, the more the merrier.” “Sure!”
“Oh, for real? Okay then, I’d love to watch.” You shuffled up in front of the stage, not exactly sure where to reasonably stand. Usually this was so natural when leading DoubleCRUSH, but just as a spectator…
“Here, stand next to me!” Bobby gestured for you to come closer, and you stopped about a foot apart from him, folding your hands politely in front of you. Okay, don’t make this proximity awkward. He’s just being nice and letting you stand next to him. “Thanks…” you murmur.
“Okay, let’s get things started! Music, please!” From somewhere backstage, a sound tech had started playing the instrumental track. With the girls in position, Rumi began her vocals as they rehearsed Golden .
You nodded your head, entranced in the music– but just like opening night, Bobby was even more enthusiastic, copying their moves in sync. You couldn’t help but crack a smile. It was so cute how invested he got. “Nice moves.” you tease, giving him a gentle elbowing in his side.
“Hey… They’re just so good at this! Even you aren’t immune to it.” He gestures to how you’re bouncing on your heel and drumming your fingers against your thigh in time to the beat. “Plus… it helps if they forget their moves. I’m mirroring it for them.”
“Very cute.”
At the end of the song, you and Bobby both applauded for the girls. “Wow, impressive. I’m sure you’re going to take home the gold with that song. Did you guys choose it for the finals on purpose?”
He shrugged, his smile proud. “Well, they wanted to end on a high note. What better song to perform? Even if we don’t win…”
He kept talking so passionately, but you began to zone out as you just… couldn’t take your eyes off of him. His enthusiastic expression, those bright eyes and excited gesticulations. You were so busy studying his face that his words about the girls were an afterthought. As you took in every detail, you noticed something, and words slipped out without having time to realize them.
“...Are you wearing eyeliner?”
He paused, absorbing the question. “Am I what?”
“Wearing eyeliner,” you repeat. “Or do your eyes just naturally look like that?”
“No– well, yes, I’m wearing eyeliner. Is there something wrong with that? Is it smudged?”
“No. It’s fine. I just didn’t realize until now. It looks great on you.”
He flashed that adorable smile at you once more, running his fingers through his hair. “Ohh, stop. You’re too sweet. Mira actually taught me how to do it perfectly. Have you seen her eyeliner? It’s sharp.”
“Well, you’ve executed it perfectly yourself. It sure makes your eyes look pretty.”
The two of you chattered between each other until Rumi cleared her throat, drawing both of your attention. You looked over to see the girls standing on the edge of the stage, their expressions various degrees of amused.
“Wow, you two are really hitting it off.” Mira remarked.
“Should we expect to see Y/N around more often?” Zoey mused.
“Yeah, or maybe you two lovebirds should get a room.” teased Rumi.
“Girls, girls, don’t say things like that…!” Bobby protested, but he seemed just as flustered as you were, cheeks blazing. He shuffled in place a bit, awkwardly stuffing his hands in his pockets. “We’re not… we aren’t doing anything like that. Just talking.” He didn’t quite sound sure of himself, so you figured you’d– for the first time in years– be a bit bold and take the initiative yourself.
“Yeah. We’re just becoming friends. It’ll take a bit of time for this to go anywhere. But I know that if he ever wants to be more than friends, Bobby would definitely tell me when he’s ready for it. Isn’t that right?” You gave him a sly wink, and he coughed into his fist.
“I– well–! You say that like it’s something inevitable…! I mean, we’ve only met a few times, it’s not like… Umm.” He glanced between you and the girls, settling on making his appeal out to them. “Of course we’re just friends! Acquaintances, honestly! I don’t have any feelings for her.”
Mira let out a quiet snort. “You say that now. But you’re giving a totally different energy when you’re around her. I’ve literally never seen you this nervous around someone.”
Bobby cringed slightly, seemingly having been read like an open book. “Ah… that… doesn’t mean anything. She’s just complimenting me a lot…”
“Oh, come onnnn, Bobby, don’t deny it! You two are clearly crushing on each other! Don’t give up this chance at romance…!” Zoey gushed, sitting down on the stage’s edge and swinging her feet. “At least exchange numbers or something!”
“I don’t know, I…”
“Auntieeeeeeee! Why the hell didn’t you come back to the–” You winced as you turned around, your niece standing there with a comically distraught expression. “Oh my fucking god. Are you serious? You’re with this guy again ?”
“Oh my god, Scarlet, I thought I told you not to come back in here. You’ve got to learn not to interrupt personal business.”
“Personal business? Right. Totally not you making excuses to eye-fuck the other manager. You know you two are perfect for each other.”
“See? She knows what’s up.” Mira smirked.
“Okay, we’re not–” You grumbled, pinching the bridge of your nose in exasperation. “We’re not getting together. This is silly. Can I not befriend a man without you desperately trying to play matchmaker, Scarlet?” You tried to make it sound as if this was a common occurrence. In reality, it was far from it. She was insistent that you were too picky when it came to men, and always loudly assumed you would never end up getting a boyfriend.
It wasn’t like it was your own fault. You didn’t want to settle for just any man, and in the music industry, most of the men you encountered weren’t the best. Most of them, even the ones your age, would rather go for your niece or Raven than you… and you knew better than to let them go through the experience of dating a man like that. It was what directly inspired Candy Boy as a song.
But your niece was seeing right through you. This was the first time you’ve ever actively pursued a man, and little did you realize, she wanted this for you as well.
“I am not ‘playing matchmaker’. I’m just saying. You always turn your nose up at the guys that end up deserving it. And now you’re being all cute and mushy around this dude, which means he has to be right for you. Come awnnnn, don’t pass on the opportunity.”
You and Bobby exchanged awkward glances, looking between each other and your respective supporters here. You give him a small shrug, as if silently asking for his input. After a moment, he let out a small exhale.
“Ah… well… I guess one date sometime wouldn’t hurt. I really do want to get to know you.”
Upon hearing his answer, the Huntr/x girls and Scarlet all gave their own little cheers of encouragement.
“On one condition, though.” You turned your gaze to Scarlet, who blinked in confusion. “You have got to stop ending up in the same room when I’m interacting with him! Seriously, it’s just uncomfortable! He’s never seen me without you around!”
She huffed in response, holding back a smirk. “Sorry, auntie. I’m not being nosy, I swear. I promise that I’ll try to stay in my room when you eventually start bringing him over for dinner~” she teased, childishly snickering as she ran off before you could tell her off.
“I am not going to–! Ugh.” You turn back to Bobby and the girls. “Insufferable, I tell you. Umm… so… about getting your number?”
“Of course! Here, let me just…” Bobby fished his phone out of his pocket, and you took out yours. You swapped them for a moment in order to put in your phone numbers. “And… there.”
You beamed. Part of you was glad that you had waited until now to ask… something told you you’d have way better luck with him than if you had done this during that hectic opening night. He might not have even texted you back…
“Fantastic. I can’t wait to talk to you. And I can’t wait to see you girls at the finals tomorrow.” You wave them goodbye before hurrying out of the theater, taking one more brief glance at Bobby before closing the door behind you.
When you got back to the hotel for the night, the band members could hardly sleep. Everyone was excited for the final night of the competition, yourself included. You hoped and prayed that everything would go right tomorrow.
When you slipped into bed and opened your phone, you noticed a text message notification. Sure enough…
Bobby
Hey, you there?
You didn’t give me the wrong # did you? Lol
You rolled your eyes, getting yourself comfy before answering.
You
Of course I didn’t
What reason would I have to trick you??
…After a moment of bouncing between “read” and “typing”, you got a response.
Bobby
Ah
True
I was just a little nervous
You
I’m about to go to sleep
Let’s talk tomorrow morning
When we’re not both busy of course!
Bobby
You got it
Goodnight!
You
Goodnight
Make sure you get your rest too
With that, you set your phone on the nightstand and rolled over in bed, eagerly clutching the edge of the blanket to your chest. Now you were excited for tomorrow for another reason.
Notes:
In case you're wondering, the first four chapters of this is dedicated to just getting them to agree to go on one date. This fic is probably gonna be like 8-10 chapters ATP since I don't know how much I'm going to do with them. But I do have an ending in mind and it's a banger... I just have to connect the pieces between then and now.
Also: YES, I wrote all of DoubleCRUSH's original lyrics myself, and NO, I don't have an audio reference for you. Make up a rhythm in your head like my sister did when proofreading this.
Chapter Text
“Okay, let’s get moving! We’re supposed to get to the stadium three hours before the show and we’re burning daylight!” The day of the Golden Group finals was like trying to corral a bunch of kids; making sure they had all eaten a nutritious celebratory pre-show lunch, double-checking and triple -checking that nothing important had gotten left behind.
During that time, you were sharing little messages with Bobby; talking about how stressed you both were, discussing potential post-show activities, musing about the idea of that date once the awards were done with… it was you who ended up getting distracted rather than the bandmates by the time you had to go. You all piled into the car and soon you were off to the stadium.
As the band reached the entrance, you flashed your VIP lanyard and led DoubleCRUSH inside. Backstage was abuzz just as it had been before, with performers hyping each other up, staff making sure the equipment was working properly, and other stagehands running around. Reviewing the lineup, you spotted DoubleCRUSH listed as the third appearance of the night. Not bad.
“DoubleCRUSH! Let’s crush this show tonight!” You cheered, trying to hype them up a bit. You scanned over their faces. It was clear there was still some lingering performance anxiety, so you leaned in and huddled them together, your voice softening.
“Listen. I know that this is kind of the biggest performance of your careers so far, but I want you to just think about this. When I started the band… I didn’t think I was ever going to make it out of our little town. But look at us! We’ve done our shows out of the country . If you’ve done that, you can do anything… including this. Just don’t focus on the prize. Focus on making this performance come from the heart. I love you kids.”
They exchanged sweet smiles, leaning in for a group hug.
“Thanks, auntie…”
“We love you, too, Auntie Y/N.”
“We couldn’t have gotten here without you.”
“Yeah! You’re the best aunt and the best manager ever .”
Happy tears pricked your eyes, forcing you to peel away and dab at your face with a sleeve. “Oh… you all don’t know how much it means to me, seeing you make it so far.”
The bandmates dispersed, returning to their individual preparations, and as you stood back with a proud smile you felt a tap on your shoulder.
“Hey! Just wanted to wait until you were done with your pep talk.”
“Bobby!” You met his smile with your own, taking in the gilded black jacket he wore. “You look spiffy. Do you always coordinate with the girls?”
“I try. Besides… it’ll look nice against that gold trophy we’re definitely taking home,” he remarked, feigning a haughty look.
“Ohhhhh. You’re that sure of yourself, aren’t you?”
“Well, I was… but seeing how fired up DoubleCRUSH is after that talk you gave them… I’m thinking the girls have some competition.”
You let out a soft chuckle, waving your hand dismissively. “Ah, as if. I won’t be surprised if Huntr/x takes the gold tonight. And I won’t even be jealous, it just sounds natural. But DubCRUSH is gonna put their whole hearts into it either way.”
Bobby extended a hand. “May the best group win!”
You gently grasped his hand, giving a firm handshake. “I’m sure you will.”
Blinding lights. A roaring stadium of hyped attendees. The pressure was on, and it felt significantly greater than opening night. It was DoubleCRUSH’s turn to perform.
“Remember what I said. Play from the heart, don’t obsess over the prize. Get out there and blow the whole stadium away.”
You ushered them onto the stage, taking in the audience’s excited screams like it was the second-best melody you’d heard… because the song the kids were about to play was the first. When Raven started playing that beat, and all the instruments came together, it felt like the universe was aligning.
“Look at them… they’re really good.”
You startled, turning to see Huntr/x standing behind you, watching the show.
“Ah! I… You wanted to watch them?” you ask.
“Of course we do! After all, we promised Raven we would!” Zoey beamed.
“We’re the second-last act of the night anyways, we might as well take a peek at the competition.” remarked Mira, a small smile tugging at her lips.
Rumi nodded. “You’ve got to be one hell of an aunt and one hell of a vocalist if you raised that singer.”
“D’aww, stop, it’s part of her natural talent– Hey, when did you three find out she’s my niece?”
“Bobby told us.” they replied in unison.
“Plus we heard her call you auntie last time.” Rumi murmured.
“Oh.” You felt your face heat up, partially in embarrassment that he had ended up blabbing to the girls about your band’s dynamics… but also… a little flattered that he had shared that? Somehow it made you feel more connected. If– and it was a big if– you did end up scoring a date with him, at least these girls that were practically his daughters knew more about you. Always good to be on good terms with kin.
You all cheered on DoubleCRUSH as they finished their song, the lights dimming as the kids basked in the roar of applause. A rush of pride filled you as the sweaty bandmates shuffled backstage, looking exhausted and exhilarated at the same time. “You guys were amazing ! The high notes, the snappy instrumentals, you didn’t miss a beat! DubCRUSH is going down in history , I swear!”
Giving Raven a nudge, you gesture behind you at the idols grinning in your direction. “And… it seems like you had a surprise audience.”
Raven gasps, her eyes falling on the radiant ladies. “W-wow… Huntr/x watched us perform… My… my inspiration… got to see me drumming onstage…” she breathed, completely starstruck. She looked Zoey in the eyes, their shining gazes meeting each other. “....Can I get a high-five…?”
Zoey beamed even more sweetly. “Totally! Come on, up top!” When their palms made contact, you swear you could practically see electricity shooting through the excited young drummer. She cradled that left hand like it was a priceless artifact. “This is the best day of my life. It doesn’t get any better than this.”
Chuckling softly, you sent them on their way. “M’kay, backstage, all of you. You’ve gotta cool off and recuperate!” You followed behind, turning to give the girls a polite nod. “We’ll be watching you when it’s your turn onstage. For now I’ve gotta take care of them. Break a leg!”
Soon enough, it was time for Huntr/x to take the stage. Everyone else wanted to hang back and keep resting until the awards were announced, but Raven insisted on seeing the performance.
You linked arms with her and led her to the offstage area, standing right beside Bobby as he watched the idols. “Hey. Y’know they watched our performance? We all really appreciated that. Raven wanted to return the favor and get a good look at the show.”
“I do! That’s okay with you, isn’t it, Mr. Bobby?” Raven asked.
“Of course! I wouldn’t say no to that.” he grinned.
The whole time, despite being enthralled with Huntr/x’s performance, Raven was also half occupied by the proximity between yourself and Bobby. She would occasionally glance between the both of you, and at some point, she “accidentally” started swinging her arms around and copying the dance moves so that you’d be forced to take a step closer to him and get out of arm’s reach. It got to the point that by the end of the song, you were basically touching shoulders. Surprisingly he had made no attempt to move away from you in all that time…
“Woooooow. That was just… incredible.” Raven sighed dreamily, hugging onto you. “The concert, meeting Huntr/x, getting a high-five from Zoey… I think if anything else amazing happens tonight, I’ll just die!”
“Woah, don’t say those kinds of things so frankly. We’ll have to sign your obituary when we come home with a trophy!”
She giggled, her hug pushing you even closer to Bobby. He cracked that adorable smile at you and when you turned away, cheeks hot, Raven was still on the other side of you with a knowing smirk. “There’s more good things that could happen than just winning a silly trophy, Auntie Y/N.”
Your eyes widened, yet you didn’t dare tear your eyes from her and risk meeting Bobby’s flustered gaze with yours. “Ahahah. What do you mean?”
“You know exactly what I mean!”
An awkward chuckle forced its way past your lips, and you gently pushed Raven off of you. “I have no idea what you’re getting at, hon. Let’s go… umm… touch up your hair for the awards segment! Yes.” You pushed her along back to the dressing room, whispering into her ear once you were far enough away from Bobby. “Will you stop with that? I’ve already had to tell Scarlet to knock it off with the matchmaker thing. I will ask that man out when I’m good and ready.”
“But why aren’t you ready now? He clearly likes you!”
“Yeah, that’s what Mira said. But it doesn’t mean I–”
“ Mira said that you’ve got chemistry? Oh, that means it has to be true!” she squealed.
“No, she didn’t mean that, she meant… Come on, this is silly! Everyone is telling me that I should be all over him. What is the deal?”
“Because he’s into you! It’s so obvious! And yet you wanna hold back?”
“Okay, okay, no more about me and Bobby. This is getting annoying. Just don’t pressure me. I’m not used to this.” You sigh, grabbing Raven by the shoulders. “You know me. You know that I’ve tried dating before and it hasn’t gone well. I just don’t… I’m not sure if I’m ready to get back into it again. I don’t want to get my heart broken.”
Her expression softened, going from impatient to sympathetic. “…Oh. I… I get that. It probably is pretty hard to get into the dating scene after so many bad encounters.” She looked pensive, chewing on her lip as she mulled over what to respond with. “But… Bobby is a good guy, isn’t he? Not just a nice guy, a really good guy. Everyone who knows him says so. And now you know him too. So if you miss this opportunity… you might not find a man as good as him. Ever. He’s like… a totally once-in-a-lifetime guy.”
You took her words to heart. She really had hit the nail on the head, hadn’t she? A man with similar prospects and a similar background to you. Someone who treats the group he manages like his own children rather than just employees. He had a heart of gold. What the hell were you even thinking, still trying to deny the opportunity to really feel that sort of love? What made you think you weren’t worthy of it?!
“And… what if he doesn’t like me back…?” you whispered.
“Auntie, if the Huntr/x girls can tell that he likes you, he likes you.” Raven tittered in response.
You let out a breath you didn’t realize you were holding. “You’re right. I’m really being silly about this whole thing, aren’t I.” Releasing your grip from Raven’s shoulders, you continued to give her a gentle nudge towards the dressing room. “I’ll see where the evening takes us. Thanks for giving me that reality check.”
Once the last act had wrapped up, there was an intermission to give everyone time to prepare for the awards. You spent most of this time helping the band members touch up their hair and makeup, but after that, you decided to put a little bit of work into your own appearance. Nothing too crazy… but you also tried out a bit of eyeliner, copying the mental image of how Bobby did it.
When you were satisfied with how it looked, you took a deep breath, marched out of that dressing room, and puttered around backstage in search of Bobby. You hoped to catch him before the awards were announced.
From a short distance you spotted that gold-embroidered jacket again, rushing to his side.
“Y/N! Where’s DubCRUSH? They’re going to be starting the awards segment any minute now…” he began, then raised an eyebrow. It seemed like he had picked up on the change in your appearance, and when he did, there came that radiant smile. “Are you wearing eyeliner?”
“I am. What do you think?”
“You… you did it really well! It makes you look so nice.” His line of sight went from your eyelids to meeting your own gaze. You both held each other’s gazes in blissful silence until you realized what you had come here to ask. “Oh. Umm. By the way, I wanted to ask you something–”
“Ladies and gentlemen, the moment is here! Please welcome to the stage, our twenty finalist groups!” The announcer could be heard from backstage, the commencement of the awards segment completely cutting you off.
“Oh… ah… looks like we’re on. I’d better get the band out there.” You both split up to usher your groups onto the stage.
You and Bobby stood off to the side of the stage, watching Huntr/x and DoubleCRUSH as they huddled under those spotlights amongst 18 other nominees. You both waited with bated breath to hear the results.
First, five groups who didn’t place were announced as podium runners-up. Neither of your respective groups had been named, which for DoubleCRUSH, could either mean the best or worst-case scenarios.
“And now our podium winners, who will be taking home a bronze, silver, or golden trophy.” You held your breath, silently hoping and praying that those kids get a placement.
“Third Place goes to……
…DoubleCRUSH!!”
You jumped up and down, applauding like crazy. It wasn’t gold. But for a competition like this, it was an outstanding achievement. You felt your eyes getting misty… you were so unbelievably proud. Bobby grinned excitedly, sharing your enthusiasm as you linked hands and jumped up and down together. “I knew they’d place! Those four did amazing!”
Both of you then turned back to look at the nominees.
“Second Place goes to…. PrisM!”
The squeals of another participating girl group could be heard from the stage. You didn’t know who they were, but you were happy for them. Now came the most sought-after placement…
“And finally… the First Place winners of the International Golden Group Award, and the recipients of the golden trophy…. is none other than……
HUNTR/X!”
Now it was Bobby’s turn to freak out. “WOOOOO! I love my girls!!!” He whooped, threw his hands up in the air, and while you were distracted and applauding for the girls… he eagerly pulled you in for a surprise hug.
A pleasant shiver ran through your entire body as you were enveloped in his warm embrace. He smelled lightly of some very good cologne, something light and sweet. He gave you a little squeeze, just enough that his soft body was pressed against you for a moment too long. You basked in this moment… and then wrapped your arms around his back, hugging him in return.
The both of you eagerly congratulated each other, still clinging and chattering like giggly schoolchildren at the fact that both of your groups had placed on the podium. Eventually he began to pull away so as to not make the moment too long and awkward, but you kept your hands on his sides. “Hey… Since there’s no interruptions now… I just wanted to let you know that… I’m finally ready to ask you out on that date.”
His eyes widened, and for a moment, you half expected him to pull away. Instead… he placed his hands on your shoulders, looking completely incredulous. “Actually? You’re not joking, are you? You want to go on a date?!”
“Yes!” you confirm, unable to hide your grin. “Are you kidding? I’d be honored. Our groups are gonna have to take some time to recuperate from the show. In the meantime? I think that you, me, and a nice dinner would be the best way for us to enjoy the downtime.”
Bobby stood there, seeming like he was still trying to comprehend this information. “Yeah… yeah! That does sound pretty good. I can get a reservation at a really nice restaurant. I can work something out before we have to get back to Seoul. But I swear we’ll have a really good time. I’ll make sure of it!”
You hug him again, trying to absorb as much of that warmth as you can. “Anything will be a good time as long as it’s with you.”
Notes:
Finally! I had already planned that Y/N would be the one to ask out Bobby rather than the other way around. This chapter wasn't as long as I wanted it to be, but I promise the next is gonna have a lot of cute moments... because it's entirely dedicated to the first date.
(BTW I only upload a chapter once I'm finished with the next one. It took this long to post Chapter 4 because it took three days to write Chapter 5. That's not super important but I felt like sharing anyway.)
Chapter 5: First Date
Notes:
This chapter is going to be stuffed with some silly little headcanons since Y/N and Bobby are getting to know each other better and we don't really know too much about him in canon. I haven't finished the next chapter so I'm posting this now.
Chapter Text
You weren’t going to hear the end of this from the kids.
“I knew it! Knewwwww it! I knew you’d score a date with him!!” Raven cheered, hugging you with an excited squeal. “So where are you going? When are you going? Did he say anything else? Give me alllllll the juicy details!!”
“Ehehe, come on, give me some space! Okay. We haven’t exactly settled on the exact details, but I suggested a dinner date. He seemed to like the idea, he was talking about fancy restaurants and making sure something was arranged before they make their trip home.”
“Wow, auntie. I didn’t think I’d ever see it happen. You’re actually making moves on a guy.” Scarlet joined in on the hug, resting her head on your shoulder. “We’re all behind you on this.”
“You’ve gotta make sure you look perfect on your date night. Raven and I can help you do your makeup!” Jae suggested, the two of them sharing an eager look.
You beamed at their thoughtful idea. “Aww, thanks, you two. Just don’t go nuts with it, okay? I wanna be my most authentic self so he knows that I’m serious.”
The kids and you were finally unwinding in the hotel room, taking advantage of the complimentary amenities. Perched on the table, shiny and proud, was DoubleCRUSH’s bronze trophy. If you squint hard enough, bronze really does look like gold.
You were texting with Bobby a lot after the competition. He was clearly nervous about making sure everything went right for your eventual date: making sure his and your free times aligned so he could schedule the ideal night for a reservation, asking you about food allergies and preferences so he could pick the best restaurant, and also sprinkling in some sweet messages to you. His consideration towards you was endearing and, quite frankly, a little overwhelming. Since when had any date of yours in the past ever been so thoughtful as to ask you every detail, just to make sure you had the best experience?
Both of you had settled on going on the date the day before Huntr/x had to fly back to Seoul. It was at an upscale, yet casual place (you had both agreed on your distaste for fancier restaurants and their tiny entrees).
“Alright, I want you all to promise me you won’t burn the place down or something while I’m out,” you warned the band. You were sitting between Jae and Raven, letting them touch up the light makeup they had done for the night. “That means keeping an eye on the alcohol intake. I know you guys are excited to be bringing home a trophy, but don’t go too wild. This is your opportunity to unwind.”
“Don’t worry, we won’t. I’m exhausted enough as it is.” Jae poked his tongue out in concentration as he applied a perfect streak of glitter to your eyelids. “If Scarlet gets drunk, we’ll make her sleep in the closet.”
“Hey, fuck off.”
“Okay, quiet, you guys.” Raven and Jae stepped back, holding a mirror up to you. “Here, Y/N. How does that look?”
You blinked in surprise. While it wasn’t a huge change, there was a lot that the faint sparkles around your eyes and tint of pink to your lips did to enhance your natural beauty. “It’s perfect. You two never fail to amaze.”
“Good luck with your date. Tell us if he shares any juicy secrets.” Parker chuckled.
You rolled your eyes, a cheeky grin betraying your amusement. “I’m not telling you guys…… much.”
Despite the both of you currently staying in the same hotel– meaning you could have easily met each other before the date– you insisted on him going ahead of you so that you could surprise each other with your appearances.
When you eventually made it to the restaurant, Bobby was already standing at the door and waiting for you. He was all dressed up, a sequined suit jacket (layered over what you could tell was definitely just a casual shirt for comfort’s sake) and black pants. And he was wearing that eyeliner that highlighted his radiant eyes again. His face lit up when he saw you, his gaze traveling from your hair to your outfit back up to your face.
“Y/N! Wow! You look incredible. You’re incredible.” he gushed.
“Me? Look at you! You look like you’re about to put on a concert of your own with that getup. Love it.”
“Oh, god, it’s not too much, is it? I just thought it would be really great to wear it.”
“No, I meant that in the best way. What other man would wear something so glitzy on a first date? It’s iconic. It really suits you.”
His face was practically glowing red at your barrage of compliments. He let out a quiet cough as he tried to recollect his thoughts. “Ah… you really know what to say to make a guy feel good, huh…? Thank you. Ahem. Come on, let’s go inside.”
You both went inside, Bobby confirming the reservation at the door. A waitress led you both to a table for two, one right next to a window with a pleasant view of the city at night.
“So, this place is supposed to be really good, huh? I don’t really go to the upscale places very often, even though I can easily afford it now…” You picked up a menu, scanning over the options and pursing your lip in thought. “We actually end up frequenting Cheesecake Factory or Dairy Queen when we’re here in the States.”
“Really? Ha, that’s how I am most of the time. It’s nice to go to a five-star restaurant as a treat once in a while, but it loses its luxury when you can afford to do it all the time. So I just… don’t. Actually, funny enough, the girls usually prefer ordering in too.”
“Right? After a show, nobody wants to eat a tiny little plate of entrees at some Michelin five-star. They want that celebratory dinner to leave them stuffed and satisfied.”
A waitress approached the table and set down two glasses of ice water, a lemon wedge perched on the rim of both. “Can I get you started with any appetizers?”
(I don't know what kind of appetizers you get at fancy restaurants so just like... pretend I wrote something here, okay?)
The waitress nodded, writing it down. “Of course. We’ll have that right out for you.”
When she walked away, Bobby leaned in closer. “So… since this is our first date, and we're getting to know each other… Can I ask you a real question upfront? There's just something I'm really curious about.”
You tilted your head. “Sure, what is it?”
He suddenly looked a bit unsure of himself, like he thought he was going to get a poor answer from you. “I… well… Okay. I want to know why you're into me of all people. I know you and I bonded over all the things we have in common. And that's a great reason to love someone! But… I mean…” There was a brief pause, before he spoke again a little quieter.
“Okay, if I’m being honest, I guess I’d just really like to hear that I’m your type.”
You mulled over his question, taking a moment to look him over. He absolutely was everything you looked for in a man; sweet and understanding, incredibly supportive of the people around him… and you’d be lying if you said his chubby physique wasn’t doing something for you too. You placed your hand on top of his, smiling sweetly as you gave him your answer.
“Are you kidding? Of course you’re my type. I’ll be honest… I was smitten from the moment I saw you.”
His nervous smile shifted into one much more sincere. He let out a soft chuckle. “You were ? But that was when Scarlet completely shook me up… I’m sure I must have looked ridiculous, all scared of her.”
“It was cute, what can I say? But obviously there’s so much more I like about you now, since we’ve had all those opportunities to chat.”
“Ohhh… Like what?”
“You love to know what you’re doing right, huh?” you remarked, slightly teasing. “For one thing, you’re just such a sweetheart. The way you care about and make time for the girls, how nice you’ve been to me so far… you could have brushed me off completely due to how embarrassing our first meeting was. But you didn’t. And I really appreciate that.”
“Ahahah, well, I try.” He turned his head away, unable to make eye contact. The waitress passed by the table again, setting the plate down in front of you both.
“Are you two ready to order?”
“We, umm… I’m just gonna get steak. Medium rare.”
“Ah, the same thing for me.” You shared a glance with Bobby, a silent agreement that you both just wanted to get back to the conversation at hand. Once the waitress finally left you to it, he let out a quiet exhale.
“Whew. I think I’d really prefer if the next date we go on was a little more casual, y’know?”
You felt a pang of excitement course through you. He wants to do this again. He wants another date! Even if you had to take a trip all the way to Seoul to do it, you’d do it. Anything for him , you thought. “Yeah, for sure! I know what you mean. We’re gonna have to visit you all for that.”
“Perfect! And… maybe a date in? If you’re, ah, not opposed to that. I can cook pretty well!” He fidgeted with his jacket sleeves as he proposed the idea. “It’d give everyone time to bond a little bit while we enjoy a night in.”
“Oh, that’s true, I’m sure the kids would love to get to know the girls better! And I’d absolutely love to taste your cooking. I’m sure you’ll impress me. You already have in every other aspect~!”
His eyes widened at your honeyed tone. He tittered awkwardly, tracing the rim of his glass with a finger. “You’re just saying that…”
“Oh my god, Bobby,” you sighed, a smile tugging at your lips. You took his hand, intertwining your fingers and giving his hand a gentle squeeze. After a moment of hesitation, he squeezed yours back.
“Sorry, I’m just tense. I’ll be glad we got the first date out of the way so I don’t have to feel like this next time. Whenever you decide to visit, I promise I’ll be a lot more relaxed. I just haven’t gone on a date like this in years…” he admitted.
“Boy, do I know how that feels. Don’t worry. Just because it’s a fancy date doesn’t mean the atmosphere needs to be so uptight. You really don’t have to try to impress me.”
That statement made him visibly relax, at least a bit. With the free hand you weren’t holding he picked up one of the appetizers from the plate and took a bite. “Mmm!”
“Ah, you completely distracted me from the fact that we already had some food. Let me have some.” The two of you shared the little plate, still holding hands with him while you ate and chatted. Though eventually your entrees were brought to the table and you had to let go.
“M’kay, so how about a speed round? Let’s just ask each other little questions back and forth. Nothing serious, just random things.” You suggested, in between bites of food. Bobby nodded, swallowing a bite and then tapping his chin in thought. “...Sounds fun! Can I go first?”
“Sure. Hit me with it.”
“Okay… number one guilty pleasure?”
“That’s easy. Shitty dramas. The kind that you can watch on free streaming apps. They’re sooooo awful, but they’re great for when you wanna have a movie night with people.”
“Ooh, that is a good one… Hmm. Even though it’s kind of a result of work, I think mine’s social media. I get way too distracted and end up scrolling on Tiktok…”
“Ahahah! I’m not surprised. Internet’s designed to be super addictive.”
The two of you kept on, back and forth, asking each other about a bunch of silly one-off things; your go-to pick-me-ups, favorite movies, pet peeves, fears that you have that’d be considered silly and unreasonable. By the time you both had run out of small-talk topics, your food had been long since finished. “...and– ehehe– and she kept a whole collection of the packages, just because they come in so many colors. I helped her add to it.”
The waitress stopped by the table one last time to bring you the bill. Bobby dug his wallet out of his pocket. “Don’t worry, I’ve got this.”
“Aww, really? You’re sure?”
“Of course, it’s not gonna be that much.”
“You don’t wanna split it? We could pay for each other’s meals instead of our own,” you jokingly suggested.
“That’s fun… ooh, but then who pays for the appetizer?”
“Ah, true. Okay then, if you don’t wanna split the bill, can we at least rock-paper-scissors for it?”
“Okay! On the count of three.” Both of you closed your eyes. “Rock, paper, scissors, shoot!”
You held out Paper, and when you opened your eyes, he was holding out Rock. “Aww…” He feigned disappointment, but he couldn’t hold back a grin. “I lost. Looks like I’m paying for us.”
Once he had paid, the two of you left the restaurant, stepping out into the warm night air. “I wish I could drive us back to the hotel, but I kind of just walked here. It really wasn’t too far,” he admitted sheepishly.
“Don’t worry about that. So did I.” You fell into step with him, and he hesitantly reached for your hand. When you looked at his face, he turned away, no doubt red as a tomato. Your fingers parted, lacing together with his as you accepted his hand. “I think it’s great. I’ve wanted to take a nice walk with a guy like this.”
So together you strolled, your steps in sync. You swung his arm a little as you walked, and eventually he was confident enough to meet your gaze. “So… you enjoyed the date, didn’t you? I certainly did.”
“It was fantastic, Bobby. I mean, it’s certainly been awhile since I enjoyed a night like this. With someone I really like.” You exhaled through your nose a bit, the corniness of your own words making you blush. “Ugh… I sound like a goddamn high schooler. Am I being too juvenile about this?”
“Huh? I thought it was sweet. We can afford to be a little childish since we’re comfortable with each other, right?”
“Right. We can be childish. As a treat…” Both of you shared a knowing smile, before you started swinging your arms more in tandem and walking with a spring in your steps. It was so much nicer to know that he was on the same wavelength as you; that you could be a little stupid with each other and it wouldn’t weird him out. Every interaction felt like the stars were aligning here.
The two of you made it back to the hotel, stopping in the lobby. “Well… guess this is goodnight. You and the girls have to fly back home tomorrow morning, don’t you?”
“Yeah. Let’s make sure to keep in touch, okay? I’ll try to video call as often as possible,” he promised, placing a hand on his chest. “I mean… when our schedules align, obviously. Time zones and stuff.”
“Eheh, yeah, of course…”
You held out your arms after a moment of silence. “…Huuuuuug?”
He beamed, leaning in and wrapping his arms around you. “Of course! Mmmmhm.” Both of you shared an embrace; it was just as nice as it was the first time, and you had a feeling that the sensation wouldn’t wear out. After a minute he peeled away, almost hesitantly. “Ah, well… goodnight, Y/N. I’ll call you tomorrow on the flight.”
“I can’t wait. Goodnight, Bobby.”
Chapter 6: Long-Distance
Summary:
Bobby and Y/N have some random ass video chats and things get kinda freaky at the end.

Chapter Text
The next morning, you and the kids packed up and prepared to say goodbye to LA. Of course, having a private jet, Huntr/x and Bobby would be going home quite a bit earlier than you all, so while you waited in the airport for the flight home, you were able to give him a video call.
“Hey, Bobby. Why isn’t your phone on airplane mode? Is that just allowed on private flights?”
“Ah, it’s fine, we do it all the time. I doubt a single phone call is gonna cause a plane crash.” He then feigned a pout. “And wait, that’s the first thing you wanted to ask me? No ‘how are you’? You’re not even going to tell me you already miss me?”
You let out a soft snicker. “Oh, you shush. It hasn’t even been a day!... But you’re right, I do miss you.”
Bobby smiles, seemingly satisfied with that answer. He turned, panning the camera over to face Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. “Also, the girls say ‘hi’!”
All three of them glanced up from what they’re doing, seemingly completely preoccupied. When they realize it’s you on the other end, they all beamed and called out a “hiiiii” in unison.
You smiled back, giving them a little wave before Bobby focused his camera on himself again. “So, I assume you’re still waiting on your plane? I guess this is the only call we’ll share for a while before our schedules line up again… Would you prefer if I called when it’s daytime on your side of the world? I wanna make it convenient for you.”
“Aww, you’d really do that for me? Won’t that be sacrificing your own sleep schedule?”
“I’d do anything for you. And lucky for me, staying up a little later every once in a while isn’t a super difficult task.”
His consideration warmed your heart. You couldn’t wait to see him again, though you knew that it would be a painfully long while before either of your future schedules would align to allow an actual visit. Huntr/x had their plans and you with DoubleCRUSH had yours, and for the time being that was just how it had to be. How disappointing that you couldn’t just run away with him like in the fairytales… Ugh, I’m so in love that I’m starting to think all corny… Good.
“What’s the plan for DubCRUSH the rest of the year, Y/N?” Bobby’s question finally broke you out of your daydreaming.
“Huh? Oh… well, we plan to take a break, but the kids want to release a single they’ve been working on in the next few months. We don’t really plan on doing any more live performances for the rest of this year... but we’ll see what kinds of events pop up. Maybe a New Year’s gig.”
“Sounds fun. Our next few months are looking pretty similar. We’ve got a brand deal lined up soon and the girls are gonna get to do some modeling, so that’s cool.”
“Awesome! If you get any free products, you should totally send us something– Oop. Our flight’s boarding soon. I’m gonna have to go.”
He seemed a little disappointed, but nonetheless, he smiled and gave you a little wave. “Awww. Well, I won’t hold you any longer. Have a safe trip!”
“You too. Talk to you later, hon!”
You could see that Bobby immediately looked a little flustered by the use of ‘hon’ so early on, but had accidentally ended the call before either of you had time to react to it. You yourself were a bit surprised that you had let that slip. God, at least it wasn’t something embarrassing.
“Ooh, did you just call him–” you heard from one of the bandmates behind you, but you quickly changed the subject. “Ah, hey! Come on, let’s get to the gate so we don’t miss the flight. You guys should be paying better attention than I am.”
The flight was your first chance to finally relax a bit after the past few weeks you and the band had endured. It gave you time to lay back and enjoy a few hours of peace and quiet… but it also gave you time to think, and you certainly did a lot of that.
What was your relationship going to be like, starting so long-distance? You had really only had time for one date with Bobby, and now you were on opposite sides of the world. Would either of you even have time to talk? He did promise that he would… Even so, was this something both of you could keep up until you managed to find a window of free time to take a trip and visit?
You rubbed your eyes. Maybe the exhaustion was finally setting in and you were just being unreasonable with your overthinking. The bandmates were already out like a light, so you figured it was time to sleep off those thoughts. You adjusted your neck pillow, slipped on a sleep mask, and let yourself drift off, your thoughts surrendered to a nice nap.
The events of the evening were blurred as you awoke from your long nap. Somewhere throughout that, you managed to wrangle the kids and get through the airport successfully with all your belongings in tow. Whether it was the jet lag or the sleep inertia, you were so out of it that Raven had to drive.
Getting back to the house and collapsing in your plush bed was a blessing. The moment your head hit the pillow, you were already out again and didn’t wake for the rest of the night.
Your eyes fluttered open at the first rays of sunlight peeking through the window. What a relief it was to not still be exhausted first thing in the morning. You got up, got ready, and then went downstairs to make yourself and the kids a nice breakfast.
“Hey, auntie. Sooo… the holidays are in a few months,” Raven piped up from her seat at the counter. “Hoping for anything in particular? I mean, I want it to be a surprise, but also we need to make sure we know exactly what you want!”
“It’s obvious what she wants . She wants to be with her boyfriend for Christmas!” Jae replied. “That’s what we should do. We should go to Seoul and spend a week with them!”
The idea did appeal to you, but… “Aww. I appreciate you guys caring so much about this, but isn’t it too soon to be asking to come over for a holiday visit? And alllll the way to Korea, no less?”
“Ah, come on, auntie.” Scarlet, still in her pajamas, hopped up onto a counter seat. “You’re being so reserved. You both are probably gonna talk sooooo much over video that you’ll be inseparable by then. You’re gonna want to visit him, trust me.”
“Yeah, she’s right! I heard you guys having a cute little chat before the flight.”
“Okay, everyone cool it.” You dished out freshly-made pancakes and eggs to everyone before serving yourself some. “We’ll talk about it at some point, okay? Him and I. And if everyone’s schedules line up sometime over the holiday months, I’ll let you guys know. For now, you eat!”
Everyone dropped the matter after a bit, content to enjoy their meal. While you brewed yourself a cup of tea, your phone suddenly went off.
“Is that him?”
“Shhh.” You waved a dismissive hand, juggling the tea, breakfast, and your phone as you left the kitchen and hurried out to the patio. As soon as everything was in place, you pressed the “accept call” button as if your quick setup hadn’t happened. “Hey, Bobby! I’m just enjoying breakfast right now… What’re you up to?”
You could see that he was in bed, laying casually on his stomach as he greeted you. “Hi, Y/N! I’m just cozy and ready for bed. It’s really late over here… but I’d rather stay up and talk. I can sleep in tomorrow morning anyway!”
“Wow, staying up late. Aren’t you bad,” you remarked with a titter of laughter. “You really don’t mind forfeiting your sleep for this? I’m sure we can find a comfortable midpoint.”
“No, it’s fine. Besides…” He rolled over on his side, revealing that the pajamas he was wearing were exceptionally cutesy. Even a cat print on the pants… “You wouldn’t get to see these if I called during the day!”
“Huh. Okay, I guess that is a good reason. Those are so cute.”
“I knew you’d think so… So, how was your trip home? Were you able to manage the jet lag?”
“Ohh, gosh, you have no idea. I was out of it the entire way home. Couldn’t even drive, I was so exhausted. But, like… I imagine you had it way worse.”
Your answer elicited a soft chuckle from Bobby. “You aren’t really wrong. But after so many global trips, you kinda get used to all the time zone changes. I’m sure you will too once DubCRUSH starts going on world tours.”
“I’m flattered that you think we’ll make it that far…”
“You and those kids have it made, Y/N. If they scored a bronze trophy at an international competition, they’ve got what it takes to go global. I believe in them. They’ve got the best manager in the world.”
That set your heart aflutter. What a compliment that was, coming from him! You let out a nervous exhale, sipping your tea. “Gosh, I’m not the best. Maybe second only to you.”
“Come on, I’m serious! You’ve got four of them to take care of and you do it so… effectively? Elegantly? If you weren’t a good manager, Scarlet would have tanked the band’s reputation that night before they even performed. You’re everything those kids could ask for. As a manager and a guardian.”
Fanning yourself with a palm offscreen wasn’t enough to stop your cheeks from heating up. Goddamn, he’s too nice! I’m gonna explode! It wasn’t enough that he was doing it while laying there like… that. So casual in those stupid PJs. It was a shame that you couldn’t kiss him through the screen. “But… ahh… Oh, alright. I’ll let you give me the crown for Best Manager. But only because you’re… manipulating me. With your ridiculous niceness! How dare you.” you joked, unable to hide your grin.
“Heheh. I’m glad my evil manipulation tactics are working. I’m unstoppable.”
Both of you giggled at your stupid little antics, before giving yourselves a moment of peaceful silence. You looked out at the view of the landscape, breathing in the crisp morning air and the fragrant steam of your drink. You were the first to break the silence. “Y’know, the kids and I were talking… oh, never mind.”
“Huh? What were you talking about? I wanna know.”
“Nooooo, it’s too soon, you’ll shut it down.”
Bobby brought his phone closer to his face, pleading expression filling the screen. “What, no, it’s okay! I really wanna know! Unless it involves marriage, nothing’s too soon!”
“Oh, of course not that.” You took a deep breath, nerves getting the best of you for a moment. “Okay… It’s just… Remember when we were at dinner, and we were talking about a date in? Y’know… visiting you guys in Seoul?”
“What? That’s what you were so nervous to ask about? I thought that was definite…”
“Ohhhh. You’re right. I’m being a dumbass.” You facepalmed at the realization. “Sorry, I guess I’ve just been overthinking a lot. Assuming I’m taking things too fast or whatnot. It’s true that we were already… Yeah.”
Mentally you were beating yourself up for being so insecure about this clearly budding relationship. He wanted to go on the date. He said he likes you. And for Christ’s sake, he said he’d love a visit from you! “Sorry, I’m yapping. But yeah, the kids asked about it, and I said that you and I would have to schedule that whole thing in the future. Preferably the holidays.”
“Of course! I understand that. No better time to have people over… We’ll be able to free up a week in all those months. You just have to let me know what works for you.”
“Right…” You heard him let out a yawn, and your smile softened. “Go to bed, Bobby. You’re clearly sleepy.”
“Hmm? No, it’s fine, I…” He tried to protest, but another yawn cut him off. “...M’kay, I’ll go to sleep. Goodnight, Y/N. I love you~!”
“Goodnight, I love you too.”
From that day forward, the calls became weekly, and then almost daily. It was always right when you were starting the day and he was winding down. He always had something new to talk to you about. Something funny with the girls, a new k-drama he had picked up, or even just a silly little mishap in his daily life. Every morning now, you waited eagerly to see that notification so you could be met with that beautiful man, laid out so casually on the bed while the two of you chatted and flirted.
Things became a lot more relaxed after a while, as it’s clear the initial pleasantries were wearing off between the both of you. It was no longer an attempt to be nonchalant and serene around each other– you brought your phone anywhere when on calls, even with the kids in the background to poke fun at the both of you.
"So what kind of foods do you guys eat on the regular in the US? If I'm making dinner for everyone when you all visit, you'd probably like something you're familiar with."
"Hospitality. Honestly, how sexy of you. But you don't have to worry about appealing to our American tastebuds! Anything you make has to be good..." You lowered your voice. "...actually, maybe plan to make a side dish of spaghetti and meatballs. Scarlet is the pickiest 24-year-old I have ever known."
You wondered if you’d ever get to take things further while stuck in long-distance-video-call hell. The answer to your unspoken wishes wouldn’t come until a late October morning, as you settled down on the patio with a cozy cup of morning hot chocolate. You leaned back, expecting another perfectly casual hour of talk.
“Evening handsome– hooooo my god. What are you wearing ?”
Instead of any number of his usual casual T-shirt and pajama pant combos, this time he was wearing nothing but a soft bathrobe and his boxers. He had the camera at an angle that was obviously showing off the fit– even going so far to have it undone enough to show off a generous amount of his chest, the top of his soft pecs and a light smattering of hair on display. And yet, teasingly, he gave you an innocent bat of his lashes. “What? I took a really late shower before bed. There’s nothing wrong with that, right?”
Ughh, he knows exactly what he’s doing to me. “Of course not. I know you only took it this late so you could be a little showoff.”
“Hah. I’m not very good at subtlety, am I? It’s not too early for this, though, right…?” Coyly, his free hand traced the lapel of his robe up and down.
You swallowed thickly, getting a flutter in the pit of your stomach. “God… Well, don’t make me wait. If you’re really gonna show off, just show off,” you remarked, swirling your spoon in your cup of morning tea erratically, almost like an excited tic. “You can’t interrupt my breakfast like that and just leave me hanging…”
Bobby suddenly let out a soft exhale, his cheeks red. “I know, I know… I’m just… mmm…”
“Bobby.”
“Hmm?”
“You’re not getting cold feet now, are you?”
His face grew redder still, the sliding of his thumb against the robe’s edge seeming more like a fidget than a tease at that point. “No! I’m not nervous or anything, just… building up your excitement. You really wanna see it… right?”
A soft titter escaped your lips. “You’re such a dork. Yes, I want to see.” His hesitant silence prompted you to make a quiet suggestion. “…Do you want me to hype you up a little? Would that help?”
He didn’t say anything, his expression awkward, but he gave you the tiniest nod in response.
“Alright. Well… if it makes you feel any better, I’ve been waiting to see what’s under those Huntr/x T-shirts you’re always sporting for a while now. No time like the present to show off the goods.”
“Hahh, really? You aren’t just saying that, right? I mean, I know I’m not in the best shape–”
“And that’s even better.” You blurted it out before you had a chance to consider it in your head.
“…” Bobby’s grip on the lapel tightened, and he opened up his mouth to say something, though the words were stuck for a moment. His cheeks were ablaze as he tried to come up with a response that wouldn’t ruin the mood. “Ah… I… Wow. No matter how many times I hear you say something about me like that… I’m never ready for it. Not at all…”
“I’m sorry! I swear I’m not trying to be a weirdo or anything–”
Your apologies died in your throat as you saw him pull back the robe, letting it slip off his shoulders as he made sure to show everything off for you. The entirety of his chest, a soft sheen of dampness lingering from that aforementioned shower… Your gaze trailed to the soft swell of his stomach, the perfect little paunch that dipped over the waistband of his boxers and the faint happy trail that stopped just above his belly button. After giving you a long moment of this tantalizing view, he panned up to his face, chewing on his lip in nervous anticipation of your reaction.
All you could respond with was a whispered “hooooly…” as you turned your head away, hand clasped over your mouth to hold back whatever godawful flustered noises might escape you. Pull yourself together, you’re a grown ass woman… Fuck, he’s so hot, though...
“You’re… quiet.” He tugged at the robe’s lapel before you blurted another quick protest.
“No, don’t cover up! I just need a second! Oh my god…” Letting out a deep exhale, you caught the end of your fingernail between your teeth, flustered beyond belief as you waited for the words to come. “Whew… umm… God. I don’t know what to say. It’s hotter than I was picturing in my mind.”
A lopsided smile tugged at the corner of his lips. “Ah… I’m glad you think so. Really, really glad…”
“Yeah. Hohhh. Now I wish I was over there with you.”
“Oh, really?” he remarked softly. “So… So do I. I’d sleep a lot better with you here.”
“I’m sure you would. Someday I’m gonna be there. You in my arms, resting my head on your belly for sure…”
“Ahh, now you’re just poking fun at me–”
“...and when you’re not paying attention, I’d kiss you from there all the way up to your lips… and also maybe a nibble or two. Just to keep things exciting.”
Bobby fell silent, face burning. He let out a long soft exhale, and his voice returned, albeit breathy. “…Yes. Yes, please . Do that. The first night of your visit. Every night.” He laid down on the bed on his side, angling the camera so you could get a good look at both his adoring expression and soft, chubby midriff.
You smiled sweetly, at both his plea and the way he presented himself so comfortably. You knew the holiday visit wouldn’t just be a suggestion at this point. It was a guarantee. “I promise I will. Just make sure you’ll be wearing that to bed.”
Notes:
Super sorry for taking so long to get this chapter out! Between a chaotic schedule, some really shitty things happening to me, and general burnout and lack of inspiration, it was wayyyyy too long of a break between uploads. And for what? This one ended up being shorter than I would have liked, and MAYBE underwhelming? I don't know. I'm not confident in my pacing abilities. But did you come here for professional writing, or did you come here for Bobby?

Chapter Text
Late November. You were cozied up on the couch in front of the fireplace, soaking up the warmth of the fire and the hot drink nestled in your hands. The kids would get back from their Thanksgiving trips soon, but at that point, Scarlet was the only one keeping you present company. Video calls from not only Bobby but also the bandmates and their families were added to your daily schedule, so you weren’t exactly granted complete peace.
You heard noises coming from the foyer– the front door, keys jingling, heels clicking on the hardwood floor. Scarlet was home from her shopping trip. “Auntieeeee, I’m home! Check out this gift haul.”
“Welcome back! Oooh, show me, show me…!” you got up and wandered into the foyer to indulge her.
“Okay, so I saw this bubble waffle maker and thought about how Jae said he loves the bubble waffles with the ice cream that we got at that food festival, and he wished he could eat ‘em all the time. I splurged and bought Raven those studded designer boots she’s been begging for and got her the cutest freaking at-home spa gift basket…”
“Wow, you sure know what everybody wants. I’m proud of you.”
She beamed proudly. “I know, right? I told you I’m a good listener. Parker’s hard to figure out, he doesn’t really express his likes too much. BUT I went ahead and bought him a new phone and headphones. I mean, have you seen his? It’s so busted I’m surprised he hasn’t replaced it.”
“Ahahah, that’s true. Maybe he’s just used to using what he’s got…? Good idea with the headphones, though.” You glanced at the last shopping bag she hadn’t yet opened. “...And who’s that for?”
“Ah-ah-ah! That’s your present. And you can’t look at it yet.” She snatched up the bag and tied the handles tight. “You’ll see soon. It’s got a few surprises.”
Once she had hidden away the presents in her closet, the two of you settled down on the couch. While you were completely relaxed, it seemed like Scarlet was deep in thought. She hugged a pillow to her chest as she let out a quiet sigh.
“…Y’know what, Auntie?”
“What?”
She didn’t look up at you. “It’s crazy to think that in the last year or two, we went from a dumb garage band to… all this. Sometimes I think I’m dreaming. That I’ll wake up in Mom and Dad’s house with them screaming at me to get my fucking life back together.”
Your gaze softened, as you reached over to stroke your niece’s cheek with the back of your hand. “I know how you feel, sweetie. My parents were the same way. A lot of trash talk, a lot of comparisons… We got lucky. Not a lot of people turn out to be this successful on a few dollars and a dream.”
“Really? You had to deal with your parents nagging too?”
A humorless chuckle escaped you. “Who do you think your mom got it from?” She leaned into your side, and you wrapped an arm around her back. “See, if I were your age right now, I would have totally rubbed this in her face. You would too, huh? I bet you wanted to brag about all the money and success she missed out on for bashing our dreams.”
Scarlet nodded faintly. “But…?”
“But it really isn’t worth it. Success at this caliber still isn’t worth flaunting as some kind of ‘gotcha’. We’re thriving, and we did it without shoving anybody down in the process. So let’s not lose that streak. Okay?”
“M’kay.”
“Plus, it’s not right to focus on the life you left behind when the future is so much better. I mean, you managed to buy everyone some cool-ass gifts, and we didn’t have to worry about putting a dent in our savings!”
Scarlet grinned. “Oh, shit, that’s true. Going up a tax bracket really changes your perspective.”
After a comforting hug, you both settled again. “Sooooo… any updates about that holiday visit?”
A smirk tugged at the corner of your lips, but you pushed it down. “Ehhhh, not yet. I think we’ll have to give it a few more weeks of thought…”
“But auntie, we’re not gonna get to see them until after Christmas at this rate! You’ve gotta figure out a date soon! Call him right now if you have to!” she pleaded.
“Honey, it’s like three in the morning in Korea right now. Trust me, it’ll happen sooner than you think. I won’t let us miss out on a holiday trip this year.” You reached over and ruffled her bleach-fried hair, eliciting her verbal protest. “Auntieeee.”
The first to get back from their holiday trip was Jae, who had only driven out of state for Thanksgiving. “Y/N, I brought you back a present! Grams was so happy to hear that you’ve been taking good care of me that she made you a gift basket.” He handed over a cute basket, stuffed to the brim with homemade treats and knitted socks.
“Oh my goodness, you’re going to have to call and let me thank her. So thoughtful.”
Over the next two days respectively Raven and Parker also made it home, also bearing little treats and sporting presents their own relatives had given them.
“Your mom bought you a whole new skateboard?!” Raven gawked at the shiny new board Parker held.
“Yep. Custom made, hand-painted by a local shop. It’s even got my initials hidden in the design. What’d you get?”
She flashed all the bling hanging off her wrists. “My sister did the cutest thing. She bought a load of jewelry supplies and had everyone make personalized bracelets! I ended up with eight of them. Now I’ve got a piece of all the family everywhere I go!”
“That’s so sick. I love it.”
There was something undeniably sweet about how they shared their gifts with that unbridled enthusiasm. You couldn’t wait to share your ‘gift’ with them. Now that everyone was gathered together, you clapped your hands together loud enough to get all of their attention.
“Kids! I’m so happy you’re all back, and I’m glad you had good family gatherings. I’ve just got one big present of my own to share with you.”
Their interests seemed immediately piqued.
“So,” you began, “you know how often Bobby and I have been talking since the awards. Basically every day at this point… And I know I’ve been leaving you all in the dark about when we’d consider that trip to Seoul. But…”
They perked up further. “But…?” Raven squeaked out.
“But, we did talk things over a lot while you guys were gone. Since we don’t have anything planned, and Huntr/x doesn’t have anything planned… we figured next week would be the ideal week for a visit.”
The four of them were stunned silent for a moment. Despite how outwardly you had been mulling over this decision for the last few months, the finality somehow seemed to surprise them.
“Oh my god, really? We’re going to Seoul?!” Jae gasped.
Raven threw her hands in the air, let out a squeal, and hugged you. “Yyyyyyyes!! This is the best gift we could have ever gotten! …But wait…” She furrowed her brows in thought. “That means we’re going to be there for a whole week?”
“Yep.”
“And we’re gonna need somewhere to stay, right…”
“Mhm.”
“And Bobby and Huntr/x live together, don’t they?”
“That’s right. I heard it’s the tallest building in the city, too.”
She looked like she was holding something back, at the risk that her question would end up being wrong and stupid. “So… since Bobby’s your boyfriend… doesn’t that mean we’d be staying with…?”
Unable to hold back a beaming smile, you offered one last nod of confirmation.
“…WE’RE GONNA BE STAYING WITH HUNTR/X FOR A WHOLE WEEK!!!!!”
With all the infectious excitement of a toddler hopped up on sugar, she pumped her fists in the air, cheering and jumping and running circles around everyone. “Ohmigoshohmigoshohmigosh! Aren’t you guys fucking excited?! Make some noise! Auntie Y/N is dating their literal manager and now we get to stay at their place for a WHOLE WEEK!!!!”
It seemed as though the idea was apparently just soaking in, as the others’ eyes slowly widened with realization.
“Damn, you’re right. We’re not just taking an overseas trip. This is, like… insane.” Parker murmured. “They’re international icons and we get to stay with them. Like, voluntarily.”
“And all because my auntie took a shot at dating and actually pulled!” Scarlet teased, though there was admiration behind her words.
You felt your face heat up. It did seem insane when everyone finally spelled it out to you. All you had to do was save a manager from your niece’s wrath and be nice to him a few times… and now you were days away from a flight to South Korea to stay with your boyfriend and his insanely famous charges. I’m not sure what I did to make fate favor me THIS much. God, am I not complaining…
“Y-yeah. I guess it is. Even though I wouldn’t have spoken to him if you hadn’t. Funny how that works.”
“Hmph. Stands to wonder what we did to deserve all the good karma.”
“Clearly something fucking good!”
“Alright, that’s enough. You guys should probably rest up. You just got back from your own trips. In the meantime… who wants dinner?”
The next few days flew by as you prepared everything for the trip. You and the kids were once again packing your bags and purchasing flight tickets online, and you were still sharing eager morning chats with Bobby. He was excited to tell you everything; how excited the girls were to have company, the special dinner he was planning for your first night there, and how he had made sure that everything was arranged for the kids.
“It’s gonna be nice getting to see you in person again. As much as I love you, it would really be nice to talk to you any time other than before bed.”
“Well, soon I’ll get to talk to you while we’re both in bed. If that makes it any better,” you replied with a sly smile.
The flight was going to be a long and arduous 15 hours. None of you had ever flown all the way across the globe before, and knowing the majority of it’d be overnight, you planned to just sleep through most of it. The process of getting through security and boarding for the umpteenth time this year made you really consider just how much you hated flights. You had cemented in your mind that this was the only thing you were going to hate about DubCRUSH being real celebrities.
“I wonder what Seoul is even like,” Raven mused from the seat behind you. “Just like any of our big cities, but everything’s Korean? Or will it feel totally different than, like, LA did?”
“Well, I wouldn’t know… It’s gonna be exciting to experience being in such a new place.”
“I wanna check out the experimental music scene in Seoul. There’s gotta be some kind of cool counterculture,” Jae chimed in.
Parker clapped his hands together. “Ooh, let’s eat all kinds of tasty food! Korean BBQ and bulgogi and gimbap… aaaah, I’m so excited to eat literally everything…!”
“Wonder if there’s any cool nightclubs…” Scarlet mused.
“No nightclubs,” you reply firmly. “Getting wasted in America is one thing. But I don’t trust you not to do something stupid on an international trip.”
“Whaaaaat… Auntie, you’re such a pill…”
“That’s final, young lady. Besides… you’re gonna spend the week with a trio of superstars. That’s more fun than even the coolest club could ever be, don’t you think?”
Scarlet just sat there with her mouth hanging open for a moment, before promptly facepalming. “Right. Duhhh. What am I even thinking? This week is gonna be kickass.”
You let out a faint exhale of laughter before pulling your sleep mask over your eyes and settling into a comfortable position. 15 potential hours of sleep that will almost certainly amount to no restfulness whatsoever. It would be worth it for the week you were about to have.
Rest on, rest off, maybe read a book or chatter about tourism plans with the kids, rest on again, wake up completely disoriented, eat, rest on again. What does one even do in this span of time normally…? You really wished you could give Bobby a call or something, but you’d probably fall asleep again halfway through it. So you dozed off again, and eventually you were harshly nudged in the ribs by your niece. “We’re here!”
“Snrk– Guh… huh? Oh! Right, we’re here…” Shooting up, you got your suitcase from the overhead carrier and shuffled along with your charges in tow.
The kids and you, in several semi-exhausted states, were utterly dazzled by the first sights of Seoul as you left the airport. It really was just like any other big city you’d been to… yet not at all alike. You caught a taxi and piled in, making your way to Huntr/x’s building, the tallest skyscraper in the city. For that reason you had no trouble finding your way there.
Your group approached the entrance, where a pair of bodyguards were idly securing the doors. “Y/N L/N, manager of DoubleCRUSH,” you announced, “we’re here on invite. Hopefully they have some sort of note about that. I texted their manager when we landed at the airport.”
Before either of the men could confirm for you, the doors opened… and there was the man of the hour, beaming like Christmas came early.
“Y/N! Here you are! And DubCRUSH, it’s fantastic to see you all again!” Bobby didn’t hesitate to rush over and throw his arms around you. “How was the fight here? You’re probably exhausted.”
“Well, you’re not wrong…” you reply, punctuated by a yawn. He took your hand with a sympathetic smile, leading you inside with the kids in tow.
You had to take an elevator alllll the way up to the top– the penthouse floor. You could feel Raven practically vibrating with excitement behind you, knowing who she (and all of you, by proxy) would be seeing again.
“I was a little worried that you’d get here before we finished setting everything up, but we got really lucky and got everything together early! And I… was kind of excited to see you… so I just waited in the lobby the whole time.” Bobby admitted sheepishly.
“Cute. I hope you weren’t waiting too long, though…”
“No! It was only, umm. It was only like twenty minutes!”
A snort escaped you. “I hope all the food’s still fresh, then.”
He nodded fervently. “It is, don’t worry! I kept it all warming. You’re gonna love everything I made. And of course, I remembered to cook something that the pickier ones might be more used to.” Although he didn’t name any particular names, his glance was pointed at your niece as he spoke.
As the elevator opened on the penthouse floor, you heard Raven let out a drawn-out gasp behind you. “Ohhhhh my gawdddddddd. This place is amaaaaaazing!”
Bobby led everyone to the dining room, where the table was already neatly set… and the girls were sat, too. “They’re here~!!”
Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who were slouched in their seats and supposedly bored out of their minds up to this point, jolted to attention and straightened up as they heard him enter. “Oh, finally! I thought we were gonna be waiting all night!” Zoey sighed with relief.
“Yeah. Don’t make us all wait at the table next time…” Mira groaned.
Bobby was unfazed, still pleased with their compliance. “I know, but I wanted it to look like we were all prepared and patiently waiting for our guests…! It’s just good host etiquette.”
“But you’re the host, not us.”
“You live here, so you technically are… Hey, we’re missing the point! You even forgot to say hello to our guests!” Bobby huffed, gesturing to you and the kids.
“Oh, sorry! Hi, Miss Y/N! Hi, DubCRUSH!” Zoey was the first to turn on the charm and greet you properly. “We weren’t bored of waiting for you. We’re just hungry.”
“That’s– well, no, she’s right. Hi, guys! I was wondering when we were going to see you again. I knew it wasn’t gonna be long.” Rumi added with a sweet smile.
“Annyeong. Glad you made it safe. Now that you’re here, can we eat?” Mira remarked with a little wave.
“Yes, the best part of the night! Well, the second best.” Bobby gave you a knowing look as he ushered everyone to the table. “Come on, sit, sit! I don’t want any of this to get cold.”
He proudly set out the spread of dishes, uncovering each one and releasing a wave of delicious aromas each time. Familiar and unfamiliar Korean dishes, and even a pot of pasta for Scarlet. “I think I might have gone overboard, I really wanted to go all out for tonight…”
“Nahh, it’s perfect! I couldn’t imagine a better first-night-in dinner.” Once he sat down, everyone got to passing the dishes around and serving themselves. You gave Scarlet a side eye as she quickly passed whatever unfamiliar foods she was handed in this serving cycle, until she graciously accepted the dish of spaghetti and loaded her plate with it. You glanced over the table at Bobby, who was clearly trying not to let a laugh slip.
“Now, what is this?” you asked, inhaling the wafting scent from one of the dishes.
“Galbi jjim! It’s like… braised short ribs and vegetables. Tonight’s one of those special nights where I was more than willing to make a special meal. It’s not spicy, I promise!” He seemed eager to be enlightening you.
“Well, it’s okay, I don’t dislike spicy food… But thanks! It sounds right up my alley.” You gave yourself a good portion before passing it along. “Hmm. Before we eat, I just wanna say really quick…”
“Yes?”
“I’m really grateful to be here with you. And the girls. I couldn’t imagine I’d ever find such a good man.”
Bobby looked like he might cry tears of joy right there in front of everyone. Instead, he took a sip of his drink to level himself and reached over to give your hand a tender squeeze. His misty eyes met yours.
“Of course. And I’m just as grateful to have such a patient, lovely lady. I just… can’t find the words to describe how amazing this is.”
The girls and Raven cooed at the interaction from the background, snapping both of you back to reality. Flushed, you and Bobby awkwardly release each other’s hands and prepare to eat.
You take a bite of the galbi jjim, your senses overwhelmed with flavor. It takes all your resolve not to compliment with your mouth full. “Mmmmh… mmm. Oh my god. That’s delicious! You have got to share that recipe with me.”
The praise clearly gets to Bobby, your darling boyfriend immediately blushing like a schoolboy. “Aww, come on. It really can’t be that good… you’re flattering me!”
“No, I mean it! It’s not that I had assumed you weren’t good at cooking, I’ve just never had something that tastes like this! You’ve got to promise me this won’t be the last time you cook for us. Please!”
“Ah… I can’t argue with that. Of course I’ll cook for you. At least whenever I get the chance to…” He turns his head to the side, glancing at you coyly. “...you’ll say nice things like that again, right?”
“Pfft, of course I will.”
Eventually dinner was all gone, everyone was full and happy, and with a belly of warm food downed, you were drowsier than before. Despite this you were adamant about helping him clear the table and would not hear any “but you’re our guest!” nonsense.
Scarlet approached Bobby while you both were finishing up, arms crossed. “Where are we supposed to sleep? I hope you got that organized.”
“Don’t worry! I already took care of that! Uhh, in the meantime, why don’t you get the rest of your band and hang out with the girls? I doubt anybody really wants to go to bed yet…”
You let out a yawn, and Bobby gave your back a tender pat. “Except maybe you.”
“Good call! I wonder if they’ve got a snack hoard they’re willing to share with us. Goodnight, auntie. G’night, Bobby!” Scarlet quickly retreated to the other room now that she had her answer, leaving the two of you alone in the silent dining room.
“...I think we should head to bed.” you pipe up, sudden and quiet. “You deserve your reward for making that amazing dinner.”
You could hear his breath hitch slightly. “...Really?”
“I promised you a lot during all those calls.”
“I know… but aren’t you tired? I’m sure this evening was a lot already–”
“Not too tired for you.” Slipping behind him, you wrapped your arms around his waist and pulled him back into an embrace. “At least let’s cuddle.”
He exhaled softly, and his hands came down to rest on your arms. “Yeah… that sounds nice.”
Notes:
lollll cliffhangers again... a few more things I wanna say. One, we're in the latter half of the story, so if you weren't a fan of all the OC arcs here, this is when I'm going to start toning it down. Two, I don't exactly know anything about Korean culture despite my enjoyment of KPDH, so my idea of what's considered special occasion food was nonexistent (thus I only highlight one dish lol). But looking up pictures of galbi jjim made me hungry... XP
