Chapter Text
12 Years Later
“Objection! Hearsay!” Kara yelled, as she stood up. She was over this case at this point. The prosecutor was just talking in circles at this point. She had no concrete evidence pointing to her client being guilty. All she knows is that he’s a grieving widow and dad.
“Sustained. Ms. Addison do you have an actual question?” The judge asked as she had to physically stop herself from rolling her eyes.
“The people rest, Your Honor.”
Kara rolled her eyes for the umpteen time since this case started. “The defense asks for this case to be thrown out with prejudice. The prosecution has yet to provide any evidence that my client has committed a crime. They took a grieving husband and father and extorted his pain. They had no case, so they pulled one out of thin air. This man has buried his wife and daughter without a chance to grieve.”
“Usually, I would say that is a long shot but, in this instance, I feel the same way. Ms. Addison, you have sat here for six hours and talked in circles. I have yet to see one credible witness come forward to say anything bad about this man. If you knew you had no case, then you should’ve waited until you had evidence to prosecute this man. Mr. Rockwell, I pray you find peace and acceptance in this challenging time. Case dismissed, with prejudice.” The judge hit the gavel and Tony Rockwell turned to Kara, hugging her and crying.
“I don’t know how to begin to thank you. This has been so hard to watch play out. I never saw those pictures of my family. It hurts to know my baby girl suffered. I wish I were there to protect them. I still don’t know if my son is going to make it. Since this case started, I haven’t been able to go to the hospital to see him.” Tony confessed to Kara.
To say Kara was pissed would be the biggest understatement. To not let a man see his dying son is just heartless in Kara’s eyes. “Take this.” Kara wrote a name and number then handed it to him. “Call her and tell her I sent you. Tell her you are allowed to see your son. Tell her she can call me if she needs to.” Kara said. “Who’s this?”
“That is Alex Danvers, Chief of Surgery, and my sister.” Tony smiled so wide and hugged Kara with all his might. “Thank you so much. I am eternally grateful to you.” Tony exclaimed while trying to wipe his tears. “No, you are not. I did what you paid me to do. Now get out of here and go see your little boy.”
After Tony left, Kara gathered all her paperwork and headed back to her office. She was the best attorney in all of National City and beyond. Everyone knew Attorney Kara Danvers, the youngest attorney in National City. Don’t forget her sister Alex Danvers, youngest Chief of Surgery in National City.
Kara is known as being fierce, cold, calculated, and undefeated in the courtroom. What they didn’t know was that it was only for the courtroom. Outside of the courtroom, Kara was a big ball of sunshine. She was dorky, nerdy, and very bashful. Kara arrived at the office and was greeted by her beta assistant, Nia. “Another win for the books?” Nia asked.
“Of course. I know you didn’t doubt me?” Kara questioned with a smirk. “I would never bet against you. How much battery life you have left on your bracelet?” Kara looked at her wrist and saw the bracelet blinking 20%. “20%.” Kara said looking guilty. “Kara!” Nia exclaimed as she took the bracelet off of Kara’s wrist.
“I know. I worked out this morning and I forgot to put it on the charger when I took a shower.” Kara wore bracelets that emitted the same energy as red sun lamps, since Kryptonite no longer affects her, so her powers were dampened in the courtroom. Just in case, it came about that she had powers she could prove that she didn’t cheat or lie to win her cases. That’s why she keeps them visible, and her cases are recorded.
No one, outside her law firm, know that she’s Kryptonian or that she was related to the mighty beta Clark Kent. She doesn’t call him or hasn’t talked to him since she was 12 years old. She made it her business to forget about him as family. To her he was just a guy on TV playing hero. He was never her hero. She has only had two heroes these past 12 years, Eliza Danvers, her mom and her godmother, Diana. When Clark saw Kara and Alex getting recognition on TV, newspapers, and major media outlets, he wanted to call her then. She ignored his calls and told Nia to tell him if he comes near her, she will sue him for harassment and get him locked up. It would be a shame for him to go from the Mighty hero to the Mighty fallen. He knows her track record in the court room, so he stays away.
The things that Kara and Alex have accomplished have been nothing short of amazing. They graduated high school at fourteen and fifteen, respectfully. They made a pact to be the best at everything and push each other to do better. They graduated college at seventeen and eighteen, since they took summer classes every year, so they didn’t have to do four years.
Alex graduated medical school at 22 while doing her internship so she became a surgeon at 23. Now, at 26, she is the youngest Chief of Surgery in National City.
Kara graduated from law school at 20 because she took extra classes. She started her own law firm at 22. Now, at 25, she was the best and youngest lawyer in National City. Her law firm is rated the best in the country.
They also have a science center that they bought together because they love science. The center is for STEM kids and kids in the neighborhood who have the brains to be something but need guidance. They go to the center three times a week no matter what their schedules look like. They wanted kids to know they had someone in their corner like they had Eliza and Diana in their corner. They know that they would be nowhere if it wasn’t for their mom.
As Kara was sitting down going over her next case she got a phone call from Alex. “Hello big head.” Kara said with a smile. “Hey big foot, did you send Tony Rockwell to me?” Alex asked. “Yea, I just got done with his case and it was dismissed. They haven’t let him see his three-year-old son who is in critical condition. Someone killed his wife and nine-year-old daughter.” Kara said solemnly.
“That’s inhumane. I’ll take him to the room now. I needed to make sure it wasn’t some bull. You know how people are since they know we are sisters.”
“Yea I know. That’s why I told him to tell you to call me. Are you going to make it to the center today?” Kara asked.
“Yea, I should be done by 1:30pm today. It was my day off, but I had to get some paperwork done. What time do you get off today?” Alex inquired. “I get off at one. I’ll meet you at Noonan’s first so we can get some lunch and then we can go together.” Kara informed as Nia was walking in with some new cases. “Sounds like a plan. Well, I got to go so I will see you later. I love you, big foot.” Alex said.
“I love you, too, big head.”
Kara started back on her caseload just as her best friend, Winn, bust in the door. Winn is an omega and her CFO here at the firm. He also volunteers at the center since he’s a computer whiz. “Don’t come in here with all your craziness. I have to make it through this caseload before 1pm.”
“I wasn’t coming to be crazy. I just wanted to know why you are having a get together on Saturday and I wasn’t invited.” Winn inquired with a scowl on his face. Kara looked at him with a confused expression because the last time she checked she wasn’t having a get-together on Saturday.
“I’m not. Who told you that?”
“James.” He stated with his arms still crossed.
Kara rolled her eyes because James and Winn always going back and forth about something. They have been this way ever since she introduced them to each other two years ago. She wishes the alpha would just ask him out instead of playing these little childish games with each other.
“Why do you let him get under your skin like that? You know damn well if I were doing anything you would know about it.” Kara said, shaking her head with a smile on her face.
Winn is more clueless about flirting than she is and he’s human. “He’s a dickhead. Why is he always so mean to me?” Winn pouted. “I’m going to go punch him in the balls. See you later.” With that he walked out the door with an angry look on his face. All Kara could do was laugh and get back to her work. She just hopes they will figure it out soon.
At 1pm, Kara was packing up to leave when Nia walked in with a somber look on her face. “What’s wrong, Nia?” Kara asked looking worried. “Um, I know you’re about to leave but check your email first.” Kara looked at Nia skeptically but pulled up her email. She saw an email from L-Corp and had to take a seat. “L-Corp as in Lena Luthor?” Kara asked no one in particular because she couldn’t believe this. She thought somebody was playing a trick on her until she opened the email.
The email read:
Good afternoon, Attorney Danvers,
I am requesting a meeting with you about legal representation. Below is a link with my schedule. Pencil in yourself at your earliest convenience. I will tell you what I am requesting legal representation for when we meet. I hope to see you soon.
Lena Luthor
CEO of L-Corp
Kara just looked at the email over and over again. She knew the Luthor’s because Lex was sentenced to life in an undisclosed prison when he tried to kill Clark. Everyone thought Lena was a part of it when it happened until they realized she hasn’t been in contact with Lex for 8 years. She moved to National City to open a Luthor Corp branch here. She closed the one in Metropolis and renamed the company L-Corp.
Kara didn’t know she was still staring at the screen until Nia said, “Kara, are you ok?”
“Yes, I’m fine. I’ll deal with this when I get home. I have to meet Alex and get to the center. Take the rest of day off. Have a good day, Nia.” Kara said walking out the office fast with her head spinning. She made her way to Noonan’s and waited until Alex got there. Alex texted her and told her she would be there by 2pm. Since Kara had time, she pulled out her computer to schedule her meeting with Lena Luthor. As she was about to reply she heard her name.
“Kara Danvers?” Kara looked up to see none other than Lena Luthor.
