Work Text:

“Alright, are you ready?” Keeley asked, checking the tripod again to make sure the camera was running and that Nora and her microphone were in frame with enough space for the interviewees.

“Yeah, I got this.”

As if on cue, they could hear Roy shouting “Whistle, everyone hit the showers.”

They had set up their little production on the footpath between the training pitch and the locker room, so the players were bound to pass by them on their way out. Keeley had briefed them about this via email a couple of weeks ago, so it wasn’t a total surprise when the first players rounded the corner to find a camera pointed at them.

“Hey Nora, how’s it going?”

“Hola carnalita.”

Keeley was a bit pleased to see Dani and Jamie leading the pack off the field, they would make things easy for Nora and calm her nerves. She was even more glad that they didn’t all file out at once, otherwise the video would have looked far more staged and awkward.

“Hey, we have a question for you, if you’re up for it?” Nora held out the microphone, and Jamie leaned on Dani’s shoulder to get comfortable and to make sure they were equidistant from the microphone for good sound. Keeley didn't think they got enough recognition for how good they were with media and fans.

“Yeah go on, hit me.”

“Our viewers want to know, if you could have any of your fellow greyhounds dating a relative of yours, who would your top choice be?”

Jamie laughed, and Dani looked back at the field with an amused smile, as if to check what his options were, or maybe to make sure they didn’t have anyone within earshot of this conversation.

“I mean, hands down, Sam Obisanya, right? I guess it depends, I don’t have any sisters or cousins, but I wouldn’t mind marrying him myself.” Jamie’s eyes darted over to Keeley, and she could see the glee in his eyes. He had been busy soft-launching himself into an undefined but definitely queer direction all summer.

Nora flushed, but the camera didn’t pick it up. It seemed that little Sam crush hadn’t disappeared entirely.

“And what about you Dani?”

Dani laughed. “I don’t think I have any say in it, but I do think one of my cousins would get along very well with our very own Moe Bumbercatch.”

Jamie’s eyebrows raised in surprise. “Really?”

“Yes, but I fear they must never meet, they would be too powerful together.”

“Fair enough, mate.”

“Thank you both, have a treat.” Nora held up a bowl of mixed sweet treats for them to choose from, much to their delight. Keeley smiled at them consulting over which one to choose. The internet was going to love this.

She quietly shooed them along from behind the camera to make them make space for Colin and Isaac.

“Hey there Nora, this your first day?” Colin beamed.

“Yes, can you tell?”

“Not at all, you’re cool as a cucumber.” Isaac assured her. The two of them settled into the camera frame.

“I was wondering, if one of your relatives were to date any of your teammates, who would you want it to be?” Nora repeated the question for them.

“Oh, easy, Sam Obisanya, no competition.” Isaac responded immediately, barking a laugh. “Did that come out way too fast?” He turned to look right into the camera.

“Nah that’s a solid choice.” Colin agreed. “Isaac is also a very good, very single guy.” He patted Isaac on the chest. “And he’s on bantr, so get on that, ladies.”

Keeley beamed with delight. She hadn’t even asked them to plug bantr in her email. Maybe this was Colin’s way of apologising for highjacking every brand deal of the last year with Welsh independence hashtags. Either way it really worked, Isaac was blushing and shaking his head.

“I can’t take you anywhere.” He grumbled, digging his hand into Colin’s shirt and pulling him out of frame.

“It’s called being a good wingman!” Colin protested off-screen. Keeley hoped the microphone still caught that.

“Our viewers have an urgent question for you!” Nora piped up when Jan and Richard came strolling off the pitch, repeating her question for them.

Jan huffed. “Anyone but Richard.” He rounded off the jest with an exaggerated wink.

“Very funny.” Richard pretended to kick Jan’s ass as he walked off camera, before turning to the camera. “I think the only people any of my sisters would be interested in are on the other team. I dread the day they come to visit me next.“

“You don’t think the players of women’s team would make good sisters in law?”

Richard shook his head. “No, but I fear I will never live it down if my younger sisters all get married before I do.”

“Don’t worry, we’re not letting you die alone.” Sam had overheard the last part and now joined Richard on camera.

“Hi Sam.” There was a tiny wobble in Nora’s noise. “Would you want any of your relatives to date Richard?”

“Oh no, absolutely not.” Sam joked, dodging out of frame before Richard could shove him.

“Fiche le camp” Richard huffed, shaking his head and turning to the camera. “Alas, I may die alone after all.”

It took a while to catch most of the players, and they were just about to wrap up when the coaching team made their way off the pitch.

“Should we try and get them too?” Nora asked.

“We can try. Go on.”

“Coach Kent? Coach Beard?”

“NO! Oh-“ Roy’s hand shot up to block the camera like he was used to doing with any unscheduled questions from reporters, but when he saw who was holding the microphone, his expression softened. “Hey Nora, how is it going?”

“Good, thank you. We have a question from the internet for you if you’re up for it.” She repeated the question and Keeley could see the gears turning in Roy’s head as he tried to come up with an answer that was even remotely appropriate for a girl Nora’s age.

“Listen, they’re good lads, but my sister would eat these guys for breakfast, there’s no chance in hell any of that would work.” Beard gave a snort behind him. “Am I wrong? You’ve met her.”

“Oh no, I'm not part of this conversation." Beard waved him off but didn't make any effort to actually remove himself.

"What did they guys say?" Roy asked.

"So far we've had most people choosing Sam and a lot of 'anyone but Richard'."

"That's it in a nutshell, isn't it?" Roy shook his head. A familiar crease formed between his brows and Keeley almost knew what he was going to say before he said it. "What did Jamie say?"

"Jamie said he wouldn't mind marrying Sam himself."

Roy's eyes darted over to the locker room door. "Is that what he said?" He asked. "Well, at least he didn't say Isaac."

Nora laughed. "You don't think Jamie should marry Isaac?" Keeley followed Roy's gaze when the locker room door opened and Jamie stepped out, now showered and changed, his face lighting up when he saw Roy.

"I've got some other ideas for him, that's all."

Roy suddenly shook his head like he was coming back to himself after slipping into a trance.

"Cut that, will you?" He asked, this time addressing Keeley rather than Nora.

"Yeah alright, we will."

The internet wouldn't get to see it, but she was definitely keeping that footage. She had a feeling she might need it for another occasion.

Notes:

This could be a fun little series if people like it. Let me know what other questions you'd like Nora to ask the players.

Special thanks for the French support go to the wonderful Annaelle!
