Chapter Text
Reef was sitting by his window, and watching as the sun came up for the day
He barely slept last night, not because of the constant yelling from his parents and the pain in his legs but because he was scared
He wanted to stay at his old school, with all his friends and favorite teachers, but somehow, someone found out he was a sigma and reported it to the school
Acting like a beta wasn’t hard, he just had to cover his scent and acted like he wasn’t basically fighting his instincts every damn day
50% of the beta population were not shifters, so it wasn’t hard for him to not shift in school and shift outside of school
Even if that meant he had to be by himself for most of those shifts, his mother didn’t like him too much, she said that he ruined her life by being a sigma
And she made his father not shift with him as some form of punishment.
Sigmas were not common and is looked down upon because it’s so rare and no body really has any information about them, all they know is that sigmas are a mix of an alpha and omega
Some would never know if a sigma was gonna lean more to a omega side or a alpha side and that makes people worry of them
Reef pulled his legs up to his chest, putting his face in his knees, all he wanted was to be normal, not whatever he was
He was being transferred to a werewolf school where he couldn’t hide himself there, couldn’t act like a beta if his scent and wolf would give him away
“REEF.” his mother screamed from down stairs, he grumbled, not wanting to deal with any of her bullshit this morning, “YOU BETTER BE GETTING READY FOR SCHOOL OR YOUR WALKING.” she screamed
He sighed as he got off the window seat and headed to his dresser, his mother knew that the walk would be 2 hours long and reef didn’t have the leg strength to do that
Yes he was a wolf but his human form was pretty weak compared to his wolf form, he frowned thinking about it
If only his legs were strong as his wolf he wouldn’t have to worry about his mothers threats but knowing her, she will find another way to punish him into submission
His wolf growled at that in his mind, frustrated by how he is treated, he pushed the beast back as he got dressed
Nothing too much, just a black t-shirt and shorts with a little waistband, it was winter but his body stayed pretty warm as a shifter so he wouldn’t have to worry about the cold
But it backfires in the summer, he grabbed his phone and charger and put them in his backpack before leaving his room.
Reef walked down the stairs and saw his parents sitting at the table, his mother was sipping her coffee, looking upset
And his dad, always so gentle and calm, looked stress and tired, he looked up at reef with a soft smile, “good morning buddy, how did you sleep?” His father asked
But his mother looked at him with anger and made him lower his head, both of his parents were alphas but his mother was the leader in the family
She did have a pack but they sadly died after he was born, she thinks it was his fault that she was only left with his father and not the rest of the pack
He was the first child and the last one, “your hair is a mess, do you really want to go to school looking like a rat?” She hissed, gripping her coffee cup tight
He frowned as he put his bag on the chair, “no mother..” he whispered, his voice small and weak
His father, Eric, Stood up from his chair and moved over towards him, softly brushing through his hair with his nails, “maybe you should wake up early so you can do your hair.” Eric whispered
He nodded, purring quietly as his father’s soft scent began to fill his nose, both him and Eric jumped hearing the chair scratch against the floor
“Hurry up reef, or your fucking walking” his mother, swirling growled, her wavy black hair going in her face
“Honey, please wait.” Eric muttered, before quickly fixing his hair before stepping back, his brown eyes looking at him with worry, “good luck at your first day buddy.” Eric said
Making him smile just a bit before grabbing his bag and quickly following after his mother who already went out the door.
He got in the backseat, knowing damn well he wasn’t allowed anywhere near the front seat, swirling lighted up a cigarette and rolled down the windows before pulling off
The car ride was silent like usual, cigarette smoke filling up his nose making him sneeze, he hated smelling like smoke in the mornings
But he had some cologne on him, he grumbled, looking out the window, they lived on the mountains, where almost all werewolves live
His friends never questioned it since both of his parents are shifters, and it was common to have a non shifter kid, but that only applied when one of the parents were not a shifter
They were just too blind to put the pieces together, and that made reef enjoy their company
Snowy high prep was one of the best werewolf high schools in Colorado, with the ability to teach high schoolers all the information they need for both werewolf and human life
But unlike everyone, he didn’t want to go, it would make him a target of bullying since he didn’t even know how to hunt and the fact he was a sigma
His lips pressed into a thin line, his foot tapping down on the car floor
The car halted to a stop and he was jolted forward, almost hitting the back of the seat if he didn’t have his seat belt on
“Reef.. your fucking scent.” His mother growled, staring him down from the front seat, “fix it.” She said, before driving off once more
He took a deep breath in and out to calm himself, it wasn’t his fault that his scent was salty, he couldn’t help it
When they made it to the school, his mother stopped in front of the entrance, “get out.” She grumbled, putting out her cigarette
Reef slipped out the car and grabbed his bag, before he closed the door he hesitated as he saw his mother watching him
“Don’t get beat up, or I will kill them.” She said simply, before turning away from him, “now close my damn door.” She added
He slammed her door and she looked pissed for a moment before driving off, he hissed a little before walking into the school with the rest of the students.
Reef immediately went to the attendance office, knocking on the door before going in, “hello?..” he whispered, peaking his head in the door way
A middle age woman looked up from her paperwork and smiled sweetly at him, “come in sweetheart, your a new face, what’s your name?” She asked, pushing her papers to the side
He walked into the room, closing the door behind him, “umm.. Reef, Reef Stone” he answered, going in front of her desk
She hummed and nodded, turning around to a printer behind her, “ah.. the sigma, we hadn’t had one almost 10 years ago.” She exclaimed
Making him wince, “is that supposed to make me feel better?” He asked, his lips pressing into a thin line again
The lady chuckled and shook her head, “no dearie, but i understand what you’re feeling right now.” She answered, turning on the printer, “all the sigmas I have met, always been scared and alone.”
His eyes widen at that, “you have met other sigmas?” He asked, his arms folding against his chest, she nodded, “yes I have, you meet a lot when you’re 104 years old.”
She hummed, he almost screamed hearing how old she was, she looked like she was in her 30s or 40s
“Y-Your.. 104?..” he muttered, hesitation in his voice, she threw her head back laughing, “that reaction never gets old, but yes I am, you young wolves always forget that shifters can live up to their 130s if they wanted to.” She exclaimed
Before taking the paper from under the printer and putting it in front of him
“Here is your schedule and locker number, in passing periods, you would have enough time to get the stuff that you need.” She explained
“The first 4 periods will be your regular classes and then the next 4 will be your shifter classes, so I would bring extra clothing.” She added, putting fingers on the paper and telling him where to go
She waved him goodbye as he left, but he still couldn’t wrap his head around her age, she must be lying, no way she’s 104, she doesn’t look anywhere close to that age
As he walked the hallways, it was pretty quiet, besides some loud wolves who looked to be freshman.
He walked into his first period, English, there were groups and individual tables, he walked up to the teacher, who was probably in his late 60s with black and grey hairs and a face saying that he doesn’t play
He gave the teacher his schedule and was told to sit anywhere he liked, he chose a seat that was in the back and far away from everyone as possible
It was the 4th week of the school year and it seem like everyone already had their groups besides a couple wolves who probably liked to sit alone like he did
The teacher went over the material for the assignment before pulling him aside to tell him what they were working on the previous week
Obviously those assignments wouldn’t go into the grade book for him but he just wanted reef to know the material they already learned
And same thing went for all his core classes, every teacher seemed so nice and kind, he was surprised by how they reacted to his scent though
Only 2 teachers seemed taken it back from his scent but quickly recovered and kept explaining to him the material
They probably had to deal with all types of scents from different wolves so he shouldn’t be surprised but he was
His scent was nothing special, an ocean mist, but it always had a hint of vanilla or something earthy mixed into one, it always threw people off especially if he was upset or mad
But now it was his first werewolf class of the day, he walked to the room g157 and it seemed like a gym
He hesitantly walked in and went to go find the teacher
Spotting the teacher talking to a bunch of other students he decided to wait, “teacher! Who’s that?” He heard someone yell, the teacher turned around to look at him
“Oh, this is the new transfer student reef.” The teacher said, walking over to him as other students followed
“Ooo your a transfer student? Where are you from?” One of them purred, and his throat closed up
Fear building up in his chest, “Layla, His from here, he just transferred from river high school that’s all.” The teacher chuckled
The female wolf looked at him confused, “isn’t river high school only for betas? He doesn’t smell like one.” She said, sniffing him more
He winced away, uncomfortable by her advances, “Layla that’s rude, you can’t go up and sniff someone, wolf or not.” The teacher huffed before looking at him
“Welcome to your first werewolf class, go change in the locker room, if you’re more comfortable by changing in the bathroom you can.” The teacher said, slapping their hands together loudly
The girl jumped and moved away from him, reef quickly made his way to the locker room and noticed that there was a pile of clothes with his name on it and the locker room was empty.
All of his stuff was in his personal locker so he didn’t have to worry about anything getting stolen, he quickly changed and put his clothes and shoes into a locker
He was hoping that they wouldn’t be doing anything extreme or anything like that, but he never even been in a werewolf school before so this was new to him
Exiting the locker room, he found everyone circling around the teacher, he made his way over, not sure if he should be in the front or not since all the tall alphas and betas were in the back
Someone noticed him and moved to the side so he could get into the circle, it was uncomfortable to be so close too so many wolves but it was gonna be it was ok.
“Alright class! Today we will be going up the mountain in two groups, one group with me and the other with Mrs. Fletchers!” The teacher said, with a big grin on his face
“Umm.. today team alphas will be Bowie Banks and James Cole.” He added, before waving his hand for them to come up
The female alpha who moved for him to get in the circle, went up to the front, she had pretty blonde straight hair with amber eyes, she was lean but definitely had muscle
Both alphas stood in the front, next to the teacher as he talked about what they would be doing
“So today is just gonna be the basics, how to hunt, learning how to communicate with each other in packs, knowing each others places within the pack, this is all the things you should learn and this will go into your 6th periods as well.”
The teacher explained, walking around the room, “so today, the pack leaders will be choosing their members but I will also choose for Ms. Bank’s pack and Mrs. Fletchers will choose some for Mr. Cole’s pack.”
He said before letting them pick their members, obviously they chose their friends or people they know and reef was put with Bowies pack
There was at least 12 people in each pack, which made it even, reef personally didn’t want to be there, he never shifted with other wolves before
It was gonna be the first time, “alright Bowie, you been pack leader before, you know what to do.” the teacher said, as she took his hand and said something
She did that to everyone, taking their hand and whispering something to them, when she got to him, she took his hand slowly, gently, putting them close to her chest
“Reef, I welcome you to my pack.” She whispered, his eyes widen as he felt his wolf stand up, glowing blue eyes staring at the alpha
She moved away before he could register what happened, and then everything got loud, almost like he could hear everyone’s thoughts and feelings
It was overwhelming and new, but he kept himself composed, slowly breathing in and out, trying to catch his breath
“That’s everyone right?” The teacher asked, there was a soft hum of understanding and the teacher nodded, he walked over to a big door
Almost like a garage door and pulled down a long chain, making the door open up, “if everyone can hear me through the bond, let’s begin.”
