Chapter Text

Au: stray dogs junior and senior high school is a school that courts send minors instead of jail and bc the school is for troubled kids and underage criminals many parents abandon their mentally unstable kids there. The school was created 25 years ago by Principal Natsume. They graduate high school at 18 but they can stay until 19 years old so they can transition smoothly into adulthood.

●he used to be an addict but overtime he settled to only cigarettes 

●all students love him, during free periods you could find students in his class talking to him

●26 years old

●he used to be a french assassin but was caught so this is the only job that accepts him

●he is always cold so he is in winter clothes by default

●he is in a romantic relationship with Verlaine 

 

Paul Verlaine♤

●french teacher , responsible for the girl's dorms

●he was experimented on too so he sees chuuya as a brother and was the reason they got caught 

●all the girls love him because he lets then do whatever as long as they don't leave the dorms at night 

●he tried killing the flags and take chuuya to france when he found out where chuuya was but he failed and was forced to work there

Francis Fitzgerald♤

●his 11 year old daughter died the previous year and his wife became mentally unstable and in her last day of understanding she asked him to put her in a hospital and promised him that one day she'll get better and they'll live normally , the doctors told him that she probably wont get better and he should get a divorce so he doesn't have the burden of her but he didn’t file

●he used to live in Japan with his wife and daughter so he has a passport

●he used to be a student there because used to go into manic episodes and try bombing himself as a teenager so his parents left him at the school

●he is a chill teacher but students find him a bit weird

●she has a work visa and knows that she wont lose it anytime soon (nobody else can handle doing her job)

●he was kidnapped as a toddler and when he was 8 Verlaine and Rimbaul came to take him to france but the scientists decided to bomb the whole building instead of letting their experiments be known.

●he was forced into the school with court's order 2 years ago when the sheep was caught and Chuuya said that he doesn't want the sheep to get punished so he was the only one that was named guilty 

●he is at apart of a 'school club' called the flags that most definitely isn't a gang like group

●dazai had attempted suicide and after he failed, his parents purposely made mori his doctor so they could send him to stray dogs high school and they wouldn't have to pay the fine. But nobody knows that because dazai is smart enough to not overshare

As Atsushi was sitting on the vice Principal office with his orphanage headmaste, the principal wasn't there which sounded odd...thoughts and fears circled Atsushi's brain.

What am i doing here? I'm not scared...I'm just anxiously excited...i mean it's a new school with new people and hopefully not a cell for me. What did i do to deserve being thrown in a prison with criminals. Maybe i just can't be anything other than a criminal, a useless ant thinking he is important. I'm gonna throw up.

He started taking deep breaths to not throw up and he looked around at the office. It was a basic white office with a desk like the one headmaster has and a katana on the wall, the principal looked nice too...but everyone is nice when it is convenient for them ,nobody is truly nice not even himself.

"So mister Nakajima, mister Sakunosuke will come and take you to your dorm , you'll be in the same room with mister Tanizaki. You both seem like sweet good boys so i hope there won't be any conflicts" the vice principal said , he didn’t smile yet his voice was warm, to bs honest its refreshing that he doesn't act all sweet and loving, his distance feels warm.

"Yes , sir" he said. The headmaster stood up and putted his shoulder as he turned around and left, Atsushi's eyes widened and he just froze.

The hand that crucified him and buried him in sins he hadn’t yet committed, was touching him so sweetly as if he was always able to love him but chose not to.

When the door closed Fukuzawa and Atsushi were alone , neither of them being talkative people they just let silence drown them in awkwardness.

“Cookie?” Fukuzawa asked at last.

“Yes, please.” Atsushi accepted one from the plate on the desk. Processed sugar , the first he’d had in years.

The door opened again. An orange-haired man in a black button-up shirt entered, expression calm.

“Good evening. Sorry for being late.” His gaze shifted to Atsushi. “I’m Oda Sakunosuke. Students usually call me Oda or Odasaku. I’m in charge of the dormitory you’ll be staying in, take your stuff and follow me.”

Atsushi nodded, mumbling a soft, “Okay.”

He had no bags to take with him no belongings, no keepsakes. Only 1,737 yen (ten euros) that the headmaster had pressed into his palm, and the Bible the man had insisted he carry.

While walking towards the dorms ,MrSakunosuke was stopped by a brunette student pretty tall , he had a pretty face but it wasn’t very clear since half his face was covered with bandages, he looked like the type the headmaster would hate, an emo.

"ODASAKU!who is the new kid with you?" The brunette acted the opposite of his appearance, he was excited and smile but to be honest his smile was disturbing it didn’t look human as if he had practiced smiling to the mirror trying to imitate humans.

"That’s Atsushi Nakajima, Dazai. He will be Tanizaki’s roommate"

"Hi at Sushi! I just decided I'll be your leader to this school, I'm gonna mentor you to greatness" that boy dazai said, he was ridiculous but it made Atsushi chuckle

"Dazai dont you have detection to go to?" oda said and dazai sighed and left. Atsushi peeked behind his back to watch dazai walk away.

Then he felt someone bump into him, he quickly turned to front 

"Oh I'm so sorry" he said but the boy that bumped into him ignored him. What is his problem? Is he deaf or something?...Do they let disable people here?...

Before he could continue with that thought MrSakunosuke stopped in front of dormroom number 6,before knocking the door he turned to him.

"If Junichiro happens to mention naomi , play along it's not worth it to argue, her hair is black in case you need information like that" then he opened the door 

"Come in!" A voice said from inside it was quite feminine but it was clear that the voice belonged to a boy.

Oda opened the door, the left side of the room was untouched only a white desk a bed and a stack of books waiting for him at the bed, he of course couldn't say the same about the right side but that wasn't relevant.

"Junichiro , this is your new roommate, Atsushi Nakajima. I will let you two get to know each other, i have other things to do."

Oda said living the two boys alone.

"Hi"

"Hi" 

"Well do...you like the school so far?"

"I don't know...probably, i have a bed so it's practically heaven"

"Damn dude did you... not have a bed before?" Tanizaki looked mortified looking around in the room for some help or something 

"No...i didn’t"  well that's awkward 

Tanizaki let out an awkward laugh and changed the subject "So at the room across us is Akutagawa Ryunosuke and Tachihara Michizō, ermm to our right is Jouno Saigiku and Tecchou Suehiro and to our left is John Steinbeck and Mark Twain"

"The last two don't sound...Japanese?" and generally asian ,Atsushi tried to word it as well as he could so he wouldn't sound racist 

"Yeah, they are Americans i think, Steinbeck killed someone while in Japan so he got here i guess i don't know why and Twain's parents bribed the judge to not send him to prison so the judge sent him...here"

"Oh."

"Dont ask" Tanizaki said and flopped into his bed

"So do i have the same classes as you? Do i get a...schedule? Sorry, dude I've never to a proper school beforehand and I'm not sure how all of this works"

"Well how old are you? Because it's based on age , unless you don't know the alphabet and basic math in which case you get additional evening lessons"

"I know the alphabet and simple math, the headmaster of the orphanage had taught me" he said "also im 16 years old..."

"Oh we have the same schedule then , you can just follow me to find your classes and the schedule is written on the door"

 he mumbled and pointed at the paper that was glued on the door

"Oh thanks , you are really nice...actually, i didn't expect to meet nice people in a place like that...no offense tho!"

"None taken , i thought the same when i got here and to be honest there are people that are assholes here but not everyone is yk"

"Well I'm glad to know that"

It’s seven a.m. on a Thursday, which is already bad enough, but the universe — a.k.a. Fukuzawa — decided to make it worse by scheduling Miss Margaret’s biology class first thing in the morning. Maybe that’s why this school is technically classified as a prison.

Nobody in that class ever had to wonder how many sex jokes could fit into a forty-five–minute lesson and still stay of top of the class, because Dazai already answered that question. The most ever recorded?42...42 dick jokes before eight in the morning.

“Could you shut the fuck up, Dazai?”

Miss Margaret snapped, throwing an eraser at his head. “Maybe you know biology, but most of these kids don’t. Go back to being edgy and mysterious or talk to Kunikida , he already knows this stuff. Like, sure, you can name every kind of prokaryote and virus, but half this class only knows the viruses they caught while living on the streets.”

“Wow" Dazai said, before breaking into quiet laughter.

Miss Margaret sighed, turned back to writing on the board, and continued.

“As I was saying, prokaryotes are organisms whose cells lack a nucleus and other organelles. They’re divided into two groups: bacteria and archaea ,which scientists believe have unique evolutionary lineages. Most prokaryotes are small, single-celled organisms with a simple structure...”

Once he calmed down, Dazai leaned toward Kunikida, who was busy scribbling in his notebook.

“Pssst… Kunikida!” he whisper-yelled. 

“Ku-ni-kiiii-daaa…”

Kunikida looked at him for half a second before returning to his notes.

“Ku-ku-ku-ku-kuuuni—”

“What the fuck do you want?” Kunikida hissed.

“Did you hear the gossip?”

“I do not engage in gossip.” He went back to writing.

“Okay, but last time Tachihara snuck out of the dorms and met Gin behind the medical ward ,y’know, near the berry bush that hides the weed farm , and while they were making out, they heard someone go into the medical ward. Which was weird, because Mori sleeps there and hadn’t left all night. So they looked through the northwest window ,the one that gives you a perfect view into Mori’s office , and apparently vice principal Fukuzawa was there. And according to a sober, reliable source, Fukuzawa and Mori are ex-husbands who still hook up.”

Kunikida’s eyes widened, though he kept pretending to take notes.

“And tomorrow’s visitation day and your parents are a rare specie of loving ones" Dazai continued, “so your parents coming to see you?”

“First of all, loving parents don’t leave their kid in a prison at fifteen to ‘teach them a lesson about society.’ But, i guess compared to everyone else’s parents here, they do look like saints. Second, they haven’t visited me since my third month here. Pretty sure they forgot I exist.”

“Okay, fair.”

“Oda-san is hooking up with Mister Ango.”

Kunikida fake coughed as if he hadn’t said anything. Dazai froze, frog-blinked twice , then stared at him.

“Odasaku and Ango do what?”

“I don’t know what you’re referring to,” Kunikida said flatly, not looking up.

“Fuck off, Kunikida.” Dazai stuck his tongue out at him, then turned back toward the board and raised his hand.

“What is it, Dazai?” Miss Margaret asked wearily.

“You wrote that prokaryotes don’t reproduce, but technically the right phrasing is: ‘Prokaryotes are asexual, reproducing via binary fission. Horizontal gene transfer is common as well.’ Just saying.”

“Thank you, Wikipedia parrot.”

“No problem, Marg.”

“Don’t call me that.”

“No.”

“I hope you live a long, dull, boring life. I know that’s your worst fear, so I hope it happens and you can’t do anything about it.”

Dazai finally shut up, his jaw on the floor, looking very offended 

Then the bell rung.

During the 5 minute break before the next class , Dazai went to annoy Atsushi, whom he had gotten close these past days as his 3 week detection ended and he could finally do what he promised and mentor Atsushi.

"Hey Sushi-kun what do you have next?" He asked putting his arm around Atsushi's shoulder.

Atsushi smiled awkwardly "Physics?"

During the past 2 weeks , he had memorized the schedule in fear that he will accidentally go into the wrong class and get publicly humiliated.

"That’s boring...byeeee" Dazai exclamed and left 

Then Tanizaki turned to Atsushi

"Wtf was that bro?"

"I don't know bro. I really don't." 

"He's kinda right tho... wanna skip?"

"Bro its my first month , i can't skip"

"MrKanji doesn't even take attendance let's go"

"I hate it when you are right...so our dorm?"

"Yeah bro let me inform naomi first"

"Of course, man" Atsushi said watching Tanizaki talk to the air, Atsushi had realized what oda meant that day by don't argue with him.

"Also i may or may not have agreed to hide Tachihara's cigs" Tanizaki said when he started walking towards Atsushi 

"Why would you do that? Are you nuts?"

"Well Hawthorn saw his lighter and reported him to Oda and he will get his room searched and he will be under close supervision for the next week" 

Atsushi groaned. “Tanizaki, if Oda finds out you’re hiding them, you’ll be the one under supervision.”

“Relax. I will shove them in a sock at the bottom of my drawer. Nobody’s gonna check that. Unless Oda suddenly develops a foot fetish, or someone fails a drug test.”

Atsushi gave him a side eye but didn’t argue. They reached their dorm room and slipped inside, the faint smell of cat and cheap tea still lingering from last night. Tanizaki immediately tossed his bag onto his bed, then glanced toward the corner.

“Naomi told me to tell you hi, on her behalf” he murmured casually, like it was the most normal thing in the world.

Atsushi stiffened, forcing a smile. He didn’t answer, just nodded, like he always did. It wasn’t worth picking at that scab.

Instead, he dropped onto his own bed and sighed. “So, what now? We actually gonna study? Or are we skipping physics just to sit here in silence while you pretend you’re not hoarding someone else’s cigarettes?”

Tanizaki smirked, pulling a crumpled pack from his pocket. “Correction: hiding. Not hoarding. Totally different crimes.”

“You’re unbelievable,” Atsushi muttered, dragging a pillow over his face. “If we get caught, I’m blaming you, i don't want to get punished.”

“Don’t worry ,nobody is going to punish you.” Tanizaki sprawled across his mattress, staring at the ceiling like the cracked paint patterns were constellations.

For a moment, the room was quiet. Too quiet. Atsushi peeked from under the pillow, watching Tanizaki’s lips twitch as if he was whispering to someone unseen.

"You know what i always wanted to try?"

"Cannibalism"

"No , seven star cigarettes are they as wonderful as nana describ...Cannibalism?"

"OH SORRY FOR THINKING THIS A SAFE SPACE!"

"it is just...you...you should warn me before saying you want to eat someone... who is human"
