Chapter Text

It was a beautiful day outside. Birds were singing, flowers were blooming, and for the first time in months Yumi found herself headed back to the park where she spent most of the summer.

She'd been hesitant to ever return after what happened at the end. Consequences or not, their reaction to Sakuya telling the truth was far beyond what she'd expected, so the idea of going back after all of that was pretty low on her list.

It didn't seem like she had much of a choice, though. Not only was it almost right next to her school, a few of the people there had gone so far as to approach her elsewhere to ask when she'd be visiting again. Apparently, most of the other regulars had heard of her tournament win by now and wanted to see how strong she'd gotten.

Letting people down was hard, so she decided not to do that and show up. Almost immediately, a crowd of other children descended on her like those bees that cook things alive by shaking against them in a big pile. Those things were scary as hell.

"Duel me!" a walking, talking bowl cut demanded, already raising his duel disk.

"No, me first!" another shouted as she pushed several members of the swarm to the ground.

"Out of my way!" a third shouted, literally picking up another child to move them out of the way.

Backing away, Yumi tried to bring some civility to the situation. "Calm down, okay! I can duel everyone, just don't fight!" Her inexperience handling a crowd like this was starting to show, though her capitulation to their demands seemed to settle them a bit. At the very least, it didn't seem like they were preparing to riot anymore.

It was easy to just say she would be able to duel them, but the reality of making that happen proved to be complicated. For starters, she didn't have the first idea as to who she'd play first. "Okay, uh..." She looked back and forth across the crowd before covering her eyes and pointing in a random direction. "Um, you!"

"Me!" one person shouted, seemingly who her finger had landed on.

Almost immediately, the first person was shoved out of the way. "No, it was me!" another yelled.

Before anyone else could chime in, Yumi tried to defuse the situation. "Wait, okay! Maybe you could just...do it at the same time?" This elicited a series of oohs and awes from the crowd. "Yeah, both of you duel me at once. That'll be quicker."

Seeing the positive reaction this got from the rest of the kids, she channeled her inner Kazuhiko and kept it going. "I am pretty strong now, you know," she reminded them with a confident smile and crossed arms. "Two at once won't be any problem. It'll be a nice warm up before I get serious."

The two enthusiastically agreed to this arrangement, taking places equidistant from each other and Yumi. Wasting no time at all, they began the duel, the older boy among the two opponents taking the first move. "I'm going to start with the Magic Card, Lawnmowing Next Door!" he declared, flourishing the card about to try and show off before actually placing it on the field. "My deck has 55 cards in it right now, so I get to send as many as I can to the Graveyard until it's equal to my opponent's deck. That'll be 20."

While somewhat of an odd and situational strategy, this was the absolute best use of that card anyone could have. A quick scroll through her opponent's Graveyard revealed a litany of powerful cards that could be banished to gain effects, though there were obviously a few bad hits mixed in. What really drew her attention, though, where all the low-power skeleton cards.

"Since it hit the Graveyard, I'll use the effect of my Wightprince to send a Wight Lady from my deck and a Wight from my hand to the Graveyard," he continued. While two copies of that card had hit the Graveyard, there weren't enough Wight and Wight Lady cards in his hand and deck left to use it given he'd already milled two Wights to begin with.

This was far from a problem, though. "Next, I use its effect to banish itself and two copies of Wight from the Graveyard. This lets me crown it as the Wight King!" Images of the three monsters began to burst forth from the ground, snarling and gnashing their teeth before they exploded into clouds of black smoke. As the vapor joined together, a much larger Wight emerged, letting out a screech and raising its arms.

"Since I've got nine cards in my Graveyard that count as a Wight, Wight King gains 9000 ATK!" Such a good first turn was more than a bit impressive, the crowd around them both complimentary to the boy's skill and wondering among themselves how Yumi would be able to overcome something so large with a built in revival effect.

"Nice going!" the other kid said.

"What, did you expect any less from me?" the first asked.

"I mean, I don't know. I don't think I've ever met you before. And I definitely haven't seen you use that card, so it was just kind of cool."

"Oh, okay. Thanks, then. My turn's done after I set these two cards, so follow up for me."

"Got it," he said, drawing to start his turn. Taking a moment to tap on his fingers and consider the order of his plays, he finally settled on a card, tossing it into the Graveyard. "I discard my Nimble Angler to use Ogre Frog's effect. If I drop a WATER monster, I can Special Summon it from my hand."

The amphibian hopped onto the field, letting out a croak with an extra ounce of bass to it. "Both of my cards can use their effects now," he said. "Ogre Frog lets me send Treeborn Frog from my deck to the Graveyard, but Nimble Angler lets me bring out two more Nimble cards."

The first effect was simple enough, but the real trouble would start once the next two cards showed up. "I'll use Angler's effect to summon Nimble Sunfish, then I'll summon Nimble Manta!" A pair of friendly looking fish beasts swam up to greet the frog from before, though none would be sticking around for long.

"Okay, Xyz Summon!" he declared, the Nimble monsters overlaying to form something entirely new. "Rank 2, Shine Elf!" While it wasn't that strong on its own, it would make things just a bit harder when it came to facing down the Wight King.

"I've still got more," he added. "I can Release Ogre Frog as a WATER Attribute monster to Special Summon Sharkraken. And since I still haven't used up my Normal Summon, I can play Metabo Shark right after."

Both sharks dove out of the ground like it was a body of water, flanking the elf from before. Metabo Shark had the added effect of adding the Nimble Angler and Ogre Frog back to his deck, too. Setting two cards of his own, he finally ended his turn.

"Those were good openers," Yumi complemented. It was the truth, too, as anything that could get a 9000 ATK monster on the board first turn would generally be considered a decent start to the game. They both had healthy backrows to go with that muscle, making it all the more dangerous to play recklessly. Knowing there was a second Wightprince and Wight King to come if needed made things worse, making it a distinct possibility the duel could be over if she couldn't remove them from the equation by the time she ended.

This would hopefully be the first step to doing just that. "Heavy Storm!" she declared, placing the card into her duel disk. "This destroys all Magic and Trap Cards on the field."

"I'll chain my Trap, Skill Prisoner," the first opponent said. "I target a card on my field and make it immune to monster effects that target for this turn," he explained. While it would do nothing to save the rest of their cards, it made it that much more difficult.

His other card, Pitfall, was blown away in the wind. While certainly a potential issue, Yumi didn't actually foresee a time when it would have hurt her in this duel. The same couldn't be said about the Attack Nullification on the opposite field that would have shut down her Battle Phase in a second, plus the Bubble Bringer that made another Xyz play viable.

The more pressing issue was once again the Wight player, though, as his Graveyard contained a Peropero Kerperos ready to punish her if she could do any damage this turn. It wouldn't matter how strong a monster she brought out if it would just be killed after attacking. Not only that, Wight King would be back with a potentially empty field to run over after that.

For now, she'd have to play her hand, thin her deck, and see where things could go from there. "I activate the Magic Card, Common Fusion! I can Fusion Summon a monster without an effect with this using monsters that are in my deck as material." Raising her hand, Butter Fly, Big Bat Knight, Violentist, and Wallrus appeared from her deck, slowly being pulled into a spiral.

"Forces of the ordinary, join hands to form a storm of change! Combine together to reach a new power! Fusion Summon, Level 10! Helpful, Knight of Commons!" While it would normally be somewhat reassuring to have such a hulking force on her field, Helpful was still no match for Wight King's boosted power.

"Shine Elf, use your effect!" one of the two declared. "When your monster is summoned, I can use an Overlay Unit to decrease its ATK by 500!" While not much, 3300 would make things that much more difficult in the quest to overcome Wight King. It also served to reduce the damage in case she changed her target of attack.

She couldn't just leave things there, though. With her deck as powered up as it was now, she'd have to make at least a few more plays before she could be satisfied. "I summon Rescue Rabbit! Next, I use its effect to let me bring out two Hat-Trick Magicians!"

Almost as quickly as they appeared, the monsters transformed into balls of light to conduct another summon. "Take the stage, Great Blackstone!" Just as before, Shine Elf lowered her monster's ATK by another 500, but it was hardly a concern. "When I Xyz Summon this monster, I can detach both its Overlay Units to gain another Normal Summon for a Normal Monster this turn."

To just about everyone's shock, the card she chose to use that summon on was the ever-faithful Flame Viper. This caused Great Blackstone's second effect to activate, letting her draw and discard one card each. After a short consideration, she chose to get rid of Terriger, the Magic-Equipped Warrior.

"I activate Angel's Charity!" she said, almost immediately playing the card she'd just drawn. The cards she drew were Mirror Force, Burning Slugger, and Armaduriboh, the decision on what to discard being fairly obvious. "Now I have to discard two cards, so I'll get rid of these two." She revealed the latter cards before putting them away.

"When it's in the Graveyard," she began, "Armaduriboh can banish itself to add an Equip Magic from my deck to my hand. I'm taking Fighting Spirits to use later, then activating another Equip Magic called Premature Burial!" For the cost of 800 Life Points, she brought back the Wallrus from earlier.

Now that she had two Level 2 monsters, she could Xyz Summon once again. This time, she chose to summon Enchanter Ballantine. "My new monster's effect activates!" she said, pointing towards Sharkraken. "For each Overlay Unit I detach, one of your monsters loses 500 ATK and Enchanter Ballantine gains 500 until the end of this turn."

Her setup was almost complete. Her last action before attacking was to equip Helpful with Fighting Spirits, raising its ATK by 1200 with four enemy monsters on the field. "Battle!" she declared. "Helpful, attack Wight King! Good Spirits Impact!"

"You're wasting your whole setup?" her opponent asked in disbelief. "My monster's way too strong for that card to take out! Just surrender if you can't keep up!" Though he'd soon realize just how wrong he was, this moment of what seemed like poor judgment on Yumi's part certainly boosted his ego. He even began to wonder how she could have won any kind of tournament let alone one that certified her as one of the best in Chiba right up to the moment his monster's ATK fell to 0.

"By banishing Common Fusion from my Graveyard when the monster it summoned attacks," she explained, "the monster it battles has its effect negated and has to battle using its original ATK and DEF. Which means Wight King's sitting in Attack Mode with nothing to defend itself with."

With a mighty blow of 4500 ATK straight to the defenseless Wight King, her first opponent was taken out in a single strike. With his Life Points hitting 0, he had no opportunity to banish the Peropero Kerperos from his Graveyard. The Skill Successor and trio of Breakthrough Skills wouldn't be able to help him either, though for the more obvious reason of not being able to activate on an opponent's turn.

This still left her with two more monsters to attack with and another opponent to take down. Turning to face him, she continued the Battle Phase. "Great Blackstone, attack Sharkraken with Enchanted Garden!" Throwing up its hands, the monster made a rainbow of feather flowers appear behind it in a circle. This was followed by another, then another, then several more, the numerous rings of color turning clockwise and counterclockwise as they willed before being directed towards the enemy. The fish was swept up by the feathers in an instant, vanishing from the field without a chance to react.

"Enchanter Ballantine, finish off Metabo Shark!" Once both attacks were completed, her opponent was left with nothing but a spent Shine Elf, 2700 Life Points, and no hand to face down her three monsters. Due to its own effect, Ballantine would switch to Defense Position, though its purpose was completed now. "I set one card and end my turn," Yumi said.

Her opponent was hesitant to make a move, all hope of winning this duel vanishing the moment Wight King was taken out. He reached towards his deck, hand shaking and sweat pouring from his forehead. "Don't give up yet!" his former partner said. "There might still be a chance!"

"Yeah!" Yumi agreed. "You've got to at least see what your last card is first. Even if it seems hopeless, you have to see things through to the end."

With the crowd echoing that sentiment, he mustered up some courage and tried his hardest to get the kind of card that could turn the duel around. To his surprise, the card he got could almost do it. Confidence restored, he did the best he could in a losing situation and played through to the end.

"First, since I have nothing in my Magic and Trap Zone during my Standby Phase, I can revive Treeborn Frog in Defense Mode." While he'd still end up take a lot of damage, if everything played out as he thought it could, he might actually be able to survive another turn. If that happened, anything was possible from there.

"I activate Force," he said, several people (Yumi included) marveling at such a rare card making an appearance here. "This lets me half your strongest monster's ATK and add it to one of mine." Helpful's ATK was currently 3900, transferring half of that into Shine Elf. While an impressive 3550 until the end of the turn, it wouldn't be enough to defeat Yumi.

Even so, he resolved to see things through to the end and do what damage he could in that time for the sake of his and his partner's pride. "Shine Elf, attack Great Blackstone!"

As moving as all of this was, though, reality could still be crushing at times. "I activate Mirror Force," Yumi said, reflecting Shine Elf's attack back at itself and destroying it. Just like that, his chance at clawing out a desperate victory was taken away.

"Turn end," he declared wearily, Yumi wiping out both the Frog and the remainder of his Life Points with her monsters. "Almost had something," he said to himself.

"Hey, you hung in there," his newfound friend said. "Way better than me, at least. I kind of ate ass right at the start."

He laughed. "Yeah, I guess. And we did a pretty good job all things considered. Even if we were teaming up, that's still the champion of the whole prefecture." They walked off to talk strategy and think of improvements for each other's decks, card games once again bringing two people together.

"Who's next?" Yumi asked, her own confidence bolstered now that she had a real picture of just how strong she'd gotten against two actual people instead of just a robot. Numerous volunteers emerged after that, each being soundly defeated in a one on one duel.

As much fun as some of the duels were, though, Yumi was beginning to feel tired. Not of the duels themselves but from simple exhaustion. Standing in one place and playing a card game wasn't the same as running laps, but it was still mentally taxing. After almost thirty duels in a row with little time to rest between them, it was understandable she was starting to slow down.

The number of people wanting to duel her wasn't seeming to decrease as time went on; in fact, it seemed like even more people had showed up to try and take her on. She'd begun to wonder how an accidental loss due to the strain of all these duels back to back would affect the reputation she just now realized she had. That started to make her anxious, only further feeding into her exhaustion. She began to realize that if she didn't do something soon she'd very likely have another panic attack.

Thankfully, her salvation came in the form of a familiar screaming voice. "Hey!" Kazuhiko called out as he walked up, Hideo and Kenji following close behind. "We heard you were down here again. What's going on?"

"Not much," she said with a smile, relieved to have some friendly faces to support her. "I just came to duel some people."

Kazuhiko and Hideo exchanged a small look, both picking up on Yumi's tiredness. Figuring she could use a break, he stepped in front of her and addressed the crowd. "Then I'm putting an end to all of that." He shook his fist at the chorus of expletives that got him. "None of you are even half as good as you'd need to be to give her a challenge! Just to prove it, you all have to get through me first!" Hideo slapped on their own duel disk, dabbing in agreement with such commitment that no one could figure out whether that move was meant to be genuine or ironic in nature.

"I'm very bad at this game so I'll sit this round out," Kenji said while raising his hand. Instead, he went to sit with Yumi on the sidelines as the first of many tag duels to come started. "Want some juice?" he offered, pulling a small bottle of orange juice from his bag.

"Thanks," she replied, drinking the entire thing within a few seconds.

"Looks like we made it here just in time." She nodded, sighing at what felt like her own inadequacies. "Don't push yourself too hard. You don't have to start doing that until high school."

"I don't want to let people down, though."

"Taking things a little slower doesn't mean you let people down," he told her. "Besides, if you burn out, you're going to let a whole lot more people down than if you just took a break every now and then."

"I guess," she agreed, though she simply tried to think of ways not to let anyone down at all. Moments like these only served to remind her of how many people were depending on her to succeed now. Sakuya who trained her over the summer, her family who expected her to live up to their legacy, Miss Fukukado who could lose her job if she crashed and burned, even a whole company who was sponsoring her on the expectation she'd continue to get better. Most of all, there was herself.

It was more stress than she could handle, but she was starting to get used to that feeling. Knowing there were just as many people there to help didn't hurt, either. What could have developed into another breakdown was now, almost miraculously, just reminding her how much she loved her friends.

Her smile restored and mood lifted, she thanked Kenji for his words. "I'm glad you all came here today." Not far off, Kazuhiko and Hideo were posing in perfect sync as two duelists fell to their combined strength. Standing up, Yumi dusted herself off before jumping back into the fray.

As Yumi switched her shoes after arriving at school, she felt a pencil fly into the side of her head with surprising force. She turned her attention to a quiet, "Oh no," from the side of the lockers, finding a distressed Rio awkwardly trying to explain herself.

"I didn't mean it that hard," she said, her words falling out in a flaccid jumble. "I wanted to get your attention to say something but I didn't know how to do that and threw the thing but it hit you hard and I'm sorry."

Yumi had no idea what to say to that, so Rio kept talking. "So, you were dueling at that park the other day and you were struggling. I saw some of that and it didn't seem like you were doing good, and I just wanted to know if you needed to know how to handle being famous."

"What?" she finally asked.

Rio took a breath to collect herself, realizing she probably sounded like she'd huffed a gallon of paint before showing up. "Okay, so I've been famous basically my entire life. I've been dealing with people and crowds and all of that since I was little and it's only gotten worse since I joined the pro circuit. Knowing all that, I wanted to see if you wanted some advice on how to handle that for yourself since it looked like you weren't doing too good yesterday."

"I guess," she said reluctantly. She was curious as to what Rio might be able to tell her, everything she said having been true so far.

"Well, it gets easier eventually, first of all. I'm kind of used to it now, but it was weird when I was younger. So don't beat yourself up too bad about letting people down or not living up to expectations. Most of your fans would turn on you in a second, so it's better not to waste your energy worrying about any of that."

"Do you actually believe that," she asked, a bit shocked at this display of pessimism.

"Oh, absolutely," she replied. "I've seen it happen before. You slip up a little, start to show you're not as perfect as they want you to be, and they toss you aside for someone else. All you can really do is ride the wave as far as you can, then go back to your normal life when it finally breaks. For me, that probably means I'll end up running my family's company one day."

Rio shrugged. "I guess what I'm saying is that keeping it in perspective has always kind of helped me. Knowing that it's all going to end one day makes getting there feel easier somehow. I don't know, this might not mean anything to you. Try getting a hobby, at least."

"My hobby is Duel Monsters," she said matter-of-factly.

"No, Duel Monsters is your job now. You've got to get into that mindset if you want to succeed here. You can still enjoy it, but it's a job first and a game second. When you've got those rare moments of free time with nothing to do, you'll be glad you've got something to take your mind off cards. For me, that's when I make music."

"Music?" Yumi asked. "What kind? Can I listen to it?"

Immediately, she started to turn red, realizing she'd revealed her secret hobby to someone outside her home. "I mean, I guess," she mumbled. "I could maybe throw together something on a disc, but you probably won't like it. It's only for people with really particular tastes, so I won't be surprised if it doesn't connect."

"I'll try anything once," she replied cheerily.

"Okay," she said, heart pounding as she was already formulating the perfect album to gift to Yumi. "I guess I'll try to work on that sometime."

As Rio began to take off, Yumi called out behind her, "Hey, thanks. That was actually pretty helpful." Watching the other girl scramble off, she was left to consider how she'd proceed next. Becoming a pro duelist was turning out to be a lot more difficult than just winning some games. This was especially true as of late, but something told her things were going to work out eventually.

Notes:

New year, same card games.

You thought this was going to turn into another angsty chapter, but it ended on an uplifting note all about how much Yumi loves her friends. Told you the next chapters wouldn't be as depressing.

Shout out to all you monsters using 60 card decks these days. You guys are the real heroes in this nonsense game. RIP Grass, too. Also, Treeborn is one of those cards where I can't even make an attempt to try and make its name work in English, so it stays as TCG (TCG didn't do that bad of a job preserving the pun to begin with).

I intentionally left those two kids kind of vague in description to hopefully spark your imaginations as to what they might get up to on their own time. Feel free to write your own fanfiction about this fanfiction, which I'm sure a bunch of people were about to ask about.

When Rio's not planning to kill people, she can actually give pretty good advice. Now if only she didn't make vaporwave, which carries a heavier legal penalty than first degree murder as we all know.

If you've been keeping up lately, my output has been kind of Extra Large for no clear reason. I'm thinking I might update things here more frequently, too, since I keep finding myself pretty ahead of the game in terms of chapters. Probably not as ambitiously as when I first started and wanted to do a chapter every two weeks, but more than once a month. Like, I'm sure anyone who's reading this consistently would like that, but I sort of feel the need to ask just in case everyone sees it more like, "Hey, that card game shit just got its monthly update. What a nice treat."

That's all we've got for now. Thanks for reading. Share if you're enjoying so far. Always remember to sympathize with the tag partners who have wildly disconnected deck types.
