Chapter Text
The first rays of morning sunlight paint the streets of Marsaxlokk, a coastal province in southwestern Malta, with yellow and orange as Joe parks his jeep at the harbor, near the fishermen's boats. He left home with a list and a mission to pick up only the essentials, but one look at the fresh produce displayed by local merchants and Joe knows his plan has gone down the drain.
He checks his watch. It's 5:15 a.m. Under normal circumstances, Nicky would already be awake by this time, but in his current state, it's highly unlikely he'll wake up before 9 a.m. So Joe has time to shop as usual. He carefully and thoughtfully chooses each item on his list, and even finds time to visit other vendors, searching for all of Nicky's favorite things.
Pleased with his purchase, he boards his jeep at precisely 7:30 a.m. and begins the little over an hour-long journey, which includes a ferry ride, back to his home in Kerċem, a rural region of Malta. The journey is smooth, already engraved in Joe's muscle memory. That's why he doesn't mind letting his mind wander over the events of the past seven months.
It all happened so fast. Finding out, deciding to stop the missions, saying goodbye to Andy and Nile, moving to Malta, adapting to the new life, the new reality. And, of course, waiting. The sweetest and, at the same time, the most terrifying wait of his life. Never in his nearly thousand years of existence had Joe imagined this could happen to them. Not with immortality. Surely this gift would have a high price. They never discussed it, never thinking it would be possible. But their immortal lives had other plans.
It's a little after 9 a.m. when Joe gets out of his Jeep to open the garage door. He looks around out of habit, as this is a remote area and there's no sign of another human being for miles. Even so, Joe locks the gate behind him and activates the security system as soon as he enters the house. Taking the groceries to the kitchen, Joe puts away the items that need to be refrigerated and frozen first. The rest can wait, as Joe has other priorities at the moment.
He climbs the stairs and heads to his room with long strides. Even knowing what he'll find, Joe's heart still races when he opens the suite door. All the French doors leading to the bedroom's balcony are open, allowing the sun's rays and a cool spring breeze to stream in and refresh the room. But Joe's attention is focused on the man lying on the bed.
Still lost in sleep, Nicky is a vision of pure beauty. With his bare back to the door, his silhouette is worthy of Joe's artistic drawings. His light brown hair, now shoulder-length, takes on even more luminous hues in the sunlight. Better than admiring the ethereal beauty of his beloved, is being able to touch him and confirm that Nicky is his, body and soul. So Joe takes off his shoes and climbs onto the bed, pressing his chest against Nicky's back and pulling him even closer. Nicky's reaction is immediate.
"Hmm," he groans softly. "Good morning."
"Good morning, hayati," Joe says, burying his nose in Nicky's hair. "I have to say, you look incredibly beautiful this morning."
"You say that every morning."
"Because you get more beautiful, more radiant every day. Of all the versions of you, this one is the most special," he says, placing his hand on the round curve of his beloved's belly.
"I like this version of me too," Nicky says, covering Joe's hand with his own.
"How's our little miracle doing this morning?"
"Baby is doing very well. Kicking a lot. Can you feel it?"
"Yes, I can feel it." Joe smiles. Nicky settles into bed and reaches for his watch.
"Are you leaving for the port?"
"No, I just got home. I brought all your favorites," he says, and Nicky melts.
"Joe…" he sighs. "You're doing too much."
"Me? No, Nicky. I'm not doing anything. You're doing everything. You're being home for our miracle. You're creating life. I'm just taking care of you."
"And you think that's nothing? You've been my rock, my safe haven, my horizon, my beacon. You're the last one to bed, making sure that everything's okay and that we're safe, and yet you're already up when I wake up. You buy all the supplies, cook all the meals, take care of every aspect of the house, fulfill my every wish, and yet you still find within yourself the grace and lightness to simply exude love," Nicky says, making Joe tear up.
"And you say I'm the incurable romantic. Nicolò, my heart, everything I do is driven by my immeasurable love for you and, now, for this baby. It's my duty to care for and protect you. We thought it was the jobs, but no. This is it, Nicky. This is my purpose. To be your husband, and the father of this baby. That's all I always wanted to do," he says, and Nicky.
"I love you, you incurable romantic," Nicky says, receiving a sweet kiss on the lips.
"I love you even more, my heart." Joe smiles and plants another kiss on his beloved. "Now, let me help you out of bed. You can brush your teeth and wash your face while I make breakfast. I bet you two are hungry," he says, helping Nicky up and guiding him to the bathroom.
"Yes, the baby and I are very hungry."
"Great, I'll prepare everything you like." - one last kiss and Joe heads back to the kitchen, while Nicky does her morning hygiene.
Thirty minutes later, Joe is in the kitchen, finishing serving the food, when Nicky enters the room.
"Ah, my love, everything's ready. I made shakshuka, the naan is fresh. There's greek yogurt with fruit and granola. There's hot water for the jasmine tea, but if you prefer, there's nectarine juice. Where do you want to start?"
"Everything looks so appetizing. But since the naan and shakshuka are still warm, let's start with those," Nicky says, taking her place at the kitchen counter.
"Wonderful!" As Joe serves the dishes, Nicky lets his thoughts wander for a moment to something that's been on his mind for a while.
"I think we should call Andy," he says, and Joe almost drops the plate on the floor.
"Why?" he asks, alarmed, abandoning his task and heading to his beloved's side. "Nicky, are you…"
"No! No, Joe, I'm not in labor. I'm fine, I promise. And I'm sorry if I scared you."
"It's okay, my love". Joe sighs, slightly relieved. "But do you feel like the time is coming?"
"Yes," Nicky says, looking at his belly. "Every day I feel the baby getting lower and lower. It won't be long. A few days, a week at most."
"Okay, we can call Andy. Let's have breakfast, and then I'll call her."
"Thank you, my love. And wipe that worried expression off your face. Everything is fine.."
"Hayati, you're going to have to get used to my worried face, because I feel like it won't go away anytime soon." Joe smiles and plants a kiss on Nicky's temple.
Two days later, Nicky waits on the patio while Joe greets Andy and Nile at the gate.
"You look great, boss," he says, hugging his sister.
"You know what? You look great too, Joe. Fatherhood is doing you a world of good."
"Thank you!" he says, smiling, turning his attention to Nile. "Hey, Nile."
"Hi, Joe. I missed you!" she says, earning a tight hug. "And where's Nicky?"
"I'm right here," he says, approaching. Nile quickly lets go of Joe's embrace and runs to her other brother.
"Oh my God, you're huge! I don't even know if I can hug you."
"Of course you can. Come here!" he says, pulling her into a hug. "Oh, I missed you so much."
"I missed you too. And it's not just because Andy can't cook," she says, making Nicky laugh.
"I could have let you starve, kid. Remember that," Andy says, stepping closer and pulling Nicky into a tight hug. Andy then steps back, rests her hand on the back of Nicky's neck, and smiles. "So, I heard we're having a baby?"
"Yeah, in a few days." He smiles, placing both hands on his belly. "I'm glad you're here."
"We're glad to be here too."
It's already evening when everyone gathers on the patio for an outdoor dinner. As has been customary these past few months, Joe was in charge of the meal, serving his family a veritable Syrian-Lebanese feast.
"Everything is delicious, my love. Thank you for cooking for us," Nicky says.
"I didn't know you could cook so well, Joe," Nile says between bites.
"Nicky likes to monopolize the kitchen, Nile. You've seen how he gets when someone interferes with the 'process.'"
"It’s not like that," Joe smiles. "Nicky likes to cook, and I love his food. It's the perfect combination. The kitchen has been my responsibility lately because I don't want him to get tired. He's already taking care of our most precious gift," he says, placing his hand on Nicky's belly, who smiles.
"Do you really think the baby will be born in a few days?" Nile asks.
"Yes, I'm past 40 weeks."
"And what will it be like? Are you having the baby in a hospital?"
"No. It's too risky in the hospital," Joe says.
"That's why Andy's here," Nicky adds.
"You're going to deliver the baby? Do you know how to do that?" Nile asks, astonished.
"We've all delivered thousands of babies," Nicky says.
"But no one has delivered more babies than Andy," Joe adds.
"When you're over 6,000 years old, you learn a skill or two," Andy says.
"I've watched a birth before, when I was in Baghdad. But I've never assisted in one."
"It's one of the best feelings in the world, helping a baby be born," Joe says.
"And I bet it'll be even more special now that it is your baby," Nile says. "By the way, did you guys find out the gender?"
"No, we want it to be a surprise," Nicky asks.
"What do you think it is?"
"I really have no idea," Joe says, noticing that Nicky was distracted for a few seconds. "Where did you go, habibi?"
"Quynh always said she saw a little child in our destiny," he says with a melancholic smile. "It's sad she's not here to see it." Joe and Andy look at each other.
"She's not here, but she can feel it. And I choose to believe this is bringing some peace to her heart," Joe says, kissing his beloved's temple. Nicky takes a deep breath, shaking off his melancholy.
"Sorry if I upset you. I know this is a sensitive subject."
"It's okay, Nicky. It didn't upset us," Nile says. Andy smiles and leans across the table, reaching for her brother's hand.
"Thank you for thinking of Quynh. And I know if she were here, she'd be so happy for you guys," she says, and Joe and Nicky smile. She resumes her previous posture. "So, is there any more wine in this house?"
"I'm on it!" Joe says, heading for the wine cellar.
Later that night, Joe and Nicky are snuggled in bed. Joe has his hand and ear pressed to Nicky's belly, searching for a response from the baby.
"Can you move for me, qalbi? Can you move for your Baba?" he says, speaking very close to the belly, making Nicky smile.
"Baby must be asleep, Joe."
"I know you're not asleep because I just saw you kicking your Papa five minutes ago," he says, directly to the baby. "Come on, my heart, give Baba a goodnight kick."
"I don't think…" Nicky begins, but is interrupted by a kick from the baby.
"Yes! Oh, thank you, my love. Baba loves you so much." Joe beams and plants a kiss on his beloved's belly. Nicky sighs, running his hand through Joe's curls.
"Joe, I know you don't want to talk about this," Nicky begins, and Joe tenses immediately.
"You're right, I don't."
"My love, there are already so few people our baby can count on. Who we can count on. Andy is mortal now. Quynh is lost at sea. God forbid, but if our time comes too soon, we need people to trust our child to," Nicky says, and Joe looks at him in astonishment.
"And you would trust our child's life to him?"
"He was a father, Joe. And he was our brother for two hundred years."
"He sold us out!"
"It was the pain of losing his sons that drove him to such desperate measures. I'm not justifying his actions, but today, more than ever, I understand. I still don't agree, but I understand," he says calmly. "We all agree that Booker needs to pay for his betrayal, I'm not backing out on that. I'm just saying he's family. Our baby will be here soon. In times like these, we should have family around."
This is still an open wound in Joe's heart. He can't even imagine forgiving the man responsible for all the pain and fear he and Nicky endured in Merrick's lab. And he doesn't understand how Nicky can even consider having Booker around at such a vulnerable moment. But even after a thousand years, there are still areas in Nicky's mind that Joe hasn't been able to reach. Usually, in the long run, Joe can see the reasons behind his husband’s decisions. But this will hardly be one of those times.
"I'll think about it, habibi," he says, to put an end to the matter.
"Thank you, my love."
The next morning, Joe is pouring his coffee. The conversation with Nicky the night before still resonates in his mind. He approaches the French doors that lead to the patio and smiles at the scene before him. Nicky is lying on one of the lounge chairs, his feet in Andy's lap. He unconsciously rubs his belly while Andy massages his feet. Both of them are completely focused on Nile, who seems to be telling a rather engaging story. The three of them laugh together, exchanging glances and affection that only a deep family bond can allow.
Joe still doesn't understand the reason behind Nicky's wish, but he trusts his husband's judgment. He returns inside the house and pulls out his cell phone. Booker answers on the second ring.
"Joe?" Booker's voice, though shaky and uncertain, still inflames Joe's anger. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath.
Joe must have zoned out for a few seconds, as Booker's voice sounds more anxious this time.
"Joe, are you still there? Why are you calling? Has something happened…"
"Nicky's pregnant," he says, interrupting the interrogation. "He's due in the next few days."
"Oh." he hears Booker clear his throat on the other end. "Congratulations. I'm happy…"
"He wants you here," he interrupts again. "I don't know why, but he wants you here. You are not forgiven, far from it, but Nicky wants…" It's Joe's turn to clear his throat. "…he needs his brother here."
"Malta?" Booker doesn't hesitate.
"Yes."
"I'll be there tomorrow."
Chapter 2
Summary:
"And there's not a day that goes by that I don't think about the pain I caused you guys. Especially you and Joe. I never meant for that to happen, I never meant to hurt you. I deeply regret it. You have to believe that, Nicky," Booker pleads.
"I do."
"But Joe will never believe it."
"He will. Joe loves you; you two have a special bond. That's why it's been harder for him. Give him a little more time."
Notes:
I guess we're doing three chapters! Let's go!
Important notes:
1 - english is not my native language, so forgive me for any errors.
2 - I named Booker's wife and sons. The Old Guard's wiki fandom page named two of his three sons, so I use a bit of imagination on the names. Please, bear with me.

Chapter Text
Booker arrives exactly 26 hours after Joe's call. It's been five years since the day Booker was left on the beach, so to say the atmosphere leading up to his arrival was tense is an understatement. Five years is a long time, even for a group of immortals. So much has changed in that time. None of them are the same people they were five years ago. Therefore, apprehension about which version of the prodigal brother they will encounter hangs in the air as Joe heads to greet him at the gate.
"Hey, Joe," Booker says, and Joe would be lying if he said he wasn't pleasantly surprised. For the first time in over two centuries, Booker looks healthy. A good weight, well-dressed, with a well-groomed beard and hair, the appearance of someone who has, in fact, slept eight hours a day.
"Sebastien," Joe replies, leading the way to the patio, where Nicky, Andy, and Nile are waiting.
An awkward silence hangs in the air for a few moments. There's so much that needs to be said. So many explanations. Nicky gets up, walks over to Booker, pats him on the shoulder, like he's done a thousand times before, and heads into the kitchen.
"Does anyone want more coffee?" It's his way of saying that whatever needs to be said can wait. Today they just need to be a family again.
Joe may not agree, but he understands Nicky's wish to see his family reunited, even if only briefly. And seeing them like this, sitting at the table, sharing breakfast and stories, brings a comforting nostalgia to Joe's heart. A memory of simpler times, when they didn't have to deal with loss of immortality or betrayal.
"We've barely taken any jobs these past few months. Three or four, tops," Andy says, taking another sip of her coffee. "We've been spending more time traveling. South Asia."
"Did you take Nile to see the Taj Mahal?" Nicky asks.
"Yes! It's beautiful," Nile says. "And it was such a nice gesture, the guy building that mausoleum to honor his wife."
"Well, that's what he wanted people to think. Right, Andy?" Joe says, winking at his sister.
"Wait, what? No! Andy?!" Nile's shock amuses her brothers, while Andy maintains her enigmatic expression.
"Damn, I think I have to review all my history books."
"Good luck with that, kid." Andy takes another sip of coffee. "So, Book, what's new?" And as casually as possible, Andy addresses the elephant in the room. All eyes are on Booker, who takes a deep breath.
"Not much. Well, actually, I… um, I'm sober,” he says, and the surprise is collective.
“Really?” Andy asks.
“Yes. Two years,” he says, placing the AA chip on the table.
“Have you been going to the meetings?” Nile asks.
“Three times a week. It was either that or lying in a gutter for the next century.”
“That’s great, Book. We’re glad to hear you’re taking care of yourself. Right, Joe?” Nicky says, looking at his husband. Joe clears his throat. He knows what Nicky is doing.
“Right.”
For the next two days, Joe avoided Booker as if the Frenchman were the embodiment of the plague. He knows Nicky needs the comfort and security of his family together. He won't stop him from interacting with Booker. But Joe can't deal with that right now. In fact, he doesn't want to deal with it right now. Not when Nicky is a week past his due date and Joe's nerves are on edge.
It's past midnight when Nicky comes downstairs and heads toward the kitchen. He pours himself a large glass of ice water and starts going toward the garden when he sees light coming from the living room. He's not surprised to find Booker alone, watching TV.
"I didn't know this still worked," he says, making the Frenchman jump.
"Jesus, Nicky!"
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you."
"I know that I can't die, but you don't have to tested."
"Sorry."
"It's okay." he sits back on the couch.
"I don't remember the last time we turned this TV on," Nicky says, and Booker finds it strange.
"Joe hasn't been watching the games?"
"No, he hasn't watched it in about three years. I think it was a thing between the two of you. Like a bonding moment. And with you gone, it kind of lost its meaning for Joe," he says, and Booker takes a deep breath. "Can I sit with you?"
"Well, it's your house."
"Yes, but I don't want to impose."
"Of course you can sit."
"Thank you," Nicky says, sitting in the chair across from Booker. "How have you been, Booker?" he asks, and Booker knows there's no escaping it; this conversation is happening now.
"I'm fine, as much as possible. Some days are better than others."
"That's good. You seem fine."
"Hmm..." Booker hesitates for a second. "How's Joe?"
"He's fine. You, better than anyone, can imagine that the last five years haven't been easy for him. For any of us, to be honest."
"I know. And there's not a day that goes by that I don't think about the pain I caused you guys.
"Well, he's got 95 more years," Booker jokes, making Nicky smile.
"Have some faith, Booker. Keep doing what you're doing, taking care of yourself, being there when the family needs you. Maybe you'll be surprised."
"You're an optimist, Nicky," Booker says, noticing his brother shift uncomfortably in his chair. "You okay in there?"
"Yeah, I'm just having a contraction," he says casually. Booker jumps off the couch.
"What the fuck, Nicky! Are you serious? We're here talking nonsense while you're in labor?"
"Booker, I'm fine. It's just early labor."
"Fuck! We have to call Joe."
"No, let him sleep. I'll need him later, but right now there's not much he can do."
"Jesus!" Booker runs his hands through his hair. "Are you sure? Can I help you with anything? Are you in pain?"
"Yes, I’m sure. The pain is manageable right now. And you can help me by distracting me."
"Okay, okay. How do I distract you?"
"We can keep talking."
"What do you want to talk about?"
"Can you tell me a little about your kids?"
"Damn it, Nicky. Only you to be in labor and wanting to talk about somebody else’s kids." Booker signs and sits back down on the couch. "What do you want to know?"
"Whatever you want to tell me."
"Well, you know I had three children, three boys. Philippe, Laurent, and Jean-Pierre."
"And what were they like?"
"Like any other child. Loud, fearless, messy, cheerful, smart. Too smart for my liking. They were always running around, playing, and breaking things in the house. They drove their mother crazy."
"Were they very attached to you?"
"Yes, even with all my flaws, my boys were always very attached to me. They never judged or resented me. Not even when I was arrested and later forced to join Napoleon's army. They came to say goodbye to me when I left for the war as if I were some kind of hero." He gives a bitter laugh.
"You were their father, of course they saw you as a hero."
"I was a criminal, Nicky. I went to war as a criminal and died as a deserter."
"Kids don't care about that. What mattered was that you were always there, that you loved them, that you cared for them. They didn't care who you were on the street. At home, you were their father," Nicky says, grimacing in pain.
"Another contraction?"
"Yes, but I'm fine."
"You're clearly in pain. Please, let me get Joe."
"Joe has been working so hard these past few days. He's been relentless. And I know he'll be by my side every step of the way, watching over us both, keeping us safe."
"Well, of course. You two are about to become fathers. And being a parent is a full-time job."
"That's why he deserves some more rest."
"At least let me get Andy."
"There's nothing she can do for now."
"Oh, man, you’re so fucking stubborn. I'm gonna end up having to deliver this baby alone, and Joe will kill me for good this time." Booker says, making Nicky laugh.
"I guarantee you the baby isn't even close to being born, and Joe will do nothing to you. Now can you continue telling me about your sons?"
"What else do you want to know?"
"Were you there when they were born?"
"I was. It wasn't common back then for husbands to be present at births, but I couldn't leave Sylvie alone. Besides, we didn't have the money to pay for more help, so it was just me and the midwife. She had long, painful labors; it was really hard to see her suffer so much.
"I'm glad she could count on you."
"Well, I don't know if I helped much. I was a mess each time, absolutely terrified, to be honest. I didn't know what was going to happen. Of course, all my attention was on Sylvie, but I couldn't help feeling lost and scared. Back then, the mortality rate in childbirth was high, and I dreaded the thought of losing her."
"But she pull through every time."
"Oh, she was tough. The most determined woman I've ever known. And she was the best mother in the world. So loving and caring with our boys."
"You never told me any of their names before."
"You know I don’t talk much about them."
"Thank you for telling me now."
"Well, you’re pregnant and in labor. I don’t think I can deny you anything at the moment." he says, and Nicky smiles.
"You had a beautiful family, Booker. No wonder you count the days until you see them again."
Forty minutes later, Nicky and Booker hear hurried footsteps coming from the stairs. It doesn't take long for a distressed Joe to appear in the living room.
"Nicky, habibi, what are you doing downstairs?"
"Oh, I came down to get a glass of water and ended up staying and talking to Booker."
"I got worried when I turned over and didn't find you."
"I'm sorry, my love. But I'm fine."
"No, he's not. He's in labor," Booker blurts out, as if he were keeping the deepest of secrets.
"What?!" Joe practically shouts. "Nicky, is this true?" he asks, and Nicky sighs.
"Yes, but it's just early labor."
"Why didn't you call me?"
"You were sleeping so soundly. And after these last few days, I knew you needed to rest."
"How long have you been having contractions?"
"About five hours. I started having them in the bedroom, still painless, just feeling my belly tight, so I managed to sleep through most of it. About two hours ago I started feeling stronger cramps. That's when I came to the living room.
"Nicky, I can't believe it!" Joe runs his hands through his hair and turns his attention back to Booker. "And why the fuck didn't you call me?"
"I tried, but he wouldn't let me." Booker raises his hands in surrender. Nicky gets up from the armchair and places his hand on Joe's forearm.
"Joe, my love, please look at me." he asks, drawing his husband's attention. "I didn't call you, and I didn't let Booker call you, because my contractions aren't that intense yet. They're regular, every 10 minutes, that's why I know I'm in labor. But nothing else is happening."
"Yeah, but I could… - Joe starts to speak, but is interrupted by Andy, who came down the stairs, drawn by Joe's loud voice.
"Hey, what's going on?"
"Nicky is in labor." says Joe.
"Really?"
"Yes. He's been having contractions for about five hours."
"How are you feeling? Has your water broken yet?"
"I feel fine. And no, my water hasn't broken yet."
"How intense are the contractions, on a scale of one to ten?"
"I'd say about three or four, every ten minutes."
"Okay, so it's official, we're having a baby." she says, smiling.
"What do we do now, Andy?" Joe asks, anxiously.
"Well, first of all, let's calm down. Nicky needs peace and quiet. So, Joe and Booker, take a deep breath. Everything is under control." she says, and the two men follow their boss's command. Andy turns her attention to Nicky. "Do you want me to check you?"
"Not now. I don't think I've made much progress yet."
"Okay. What do you want to do? Do you want to lie down, walk, take a bath?"
"I want to stay here. I need to distract myself. But look, you guys can go back to bed. It's still the middle of the night, you should rest."
"I'm not going anywhere, habibi." says Joe.
"Well, I was already here when you arrived." Booker jokes.
"So that's it. I'm going to make some coffee. We have a long day ahead of us." says Andy.

Chapter 3
Summary:
"You'll be by my side, right, Joe? You won't leave me alone," Nicky asks, and Joe's heart breaks at the tremor in his beloved's voice.
"Of course, my love. My God, Nicolò, of course I'll be by your side the whole time. I won't leave you for a second. Do you have any doubt about that?"
"No, of course not. It's just that… things are going to get intense, and I know you're going to be scared. You're going to be scared for me and the baby because you love us. But believe in me, okay? Believe that I can do this."

Chapter Text
There's a false sense of calm in the air. Joe, Booker, and Andy are doing their best to accommodate Nicky's wish for normalcy, but each time the man shifts in his seat, the three of them go on alert mode. Around five in the morning, Nicky's contractions now force him to close his eyes and breathe deeply with each wave. He insists he can still hold a conversation during a contraction, but it's clear he's starting to have trouble with it.
It's morning when Nile comes downstairs after a refreshing night's sleep.
"Good morning. Wow, did you all fall out of bed?"
"Actually, we've been a little busy.," Andy says, and it’s only then that the newest immortal understands the atmosphere.
"Wait, is Nicky in labor? Why didn't anyone wake me up?"
"In my defense, my plan was to let you all sleep as much as you could," Nicky says, smiling.
"I think only Nile got the memo," Booker jokes.
"Oh my God!" Nile exclaims excitedly. "But are you okay?"
"Yes. My contractions are starting to get more intense, but I'm fine."
"My love, are you hungry? You should try to eat something," Joe says.
"Joe's right. I can make something light for you, what do you think?" Andy says.
"Sounds like a good idea," Nicky says.
"Great. Booker, Nile, can you help me?" Andy asks, taking the opportunity to give the couple some privacy.
Alone in the living room, Joe places his hand on his husband's belly.
"I can't believe we're finally going to meet our miracle. Just a few more hours and we'll meet this beautiful baby," he says, caressing Nicky's belly.
"I believe you, hayati. And, yes, I'm going to be scared because I hate seeing you in pain. As I've said a million times, you mean more to me than anyone could ever dream of. You are my moon, the air I breathe, the reason I wake up every day, and the mere thought of losing you paralyzes me. But I also know that you are the strongest, kindest, most caring person I know. And if anyone can bring this baby earth side is you, Nicky." he declares, bringing tears to Nicky's eyes.
"Yusuf Al-Kaysani, are you trying to make me cry?"
"Just tears of joy, habibi."
"I love you so much."
"I love you too, beyond measure and reason." Joe kisses his beloved's knuckles when Nicky winces in pain. "What's wrong?"
"Help me get up?" he asks, clearly in pain. In a second Joe is standing, helping Nicky to get up from the armchair.
"Are you okay? Should I call Andy?"
"No, I'm fine. I'm about to have a contraction and I need to stand up." Nicky says, and suddenly, the atmosphere changes.
Leaning against the back of the armchair, Nicky lowers his head and begins to moan, while swaying his hips rhythmically, leaving Joe worried. It doesn't take long for Andy to appear in the room, drawn by Nicky's moans.
"Andy, what's happening?" Joe asks.
"It seems we're making progress." she says, approaching Nicky, but taking care not to touch him during what seems to be the peak of the contraction. Gradually the moans lose intensity and Nicky regains his composure.
" You're back with us, Nicky?" Andy asks cautiously.
"Yes, I'm here. I'm fine." he says, panting.
"What do you need, habibi?" Joe asks.
"I'm thirsty, I need something to drink."
"There's tea and juice in the kitchen. Nile is making pancakes and scrambled eggs. Do you think you can eat something?"
"Come on, my love, it's important that you eat."
"Okay, I can eat some fruit, maybe some toast."
"Anything you can get, habibi. You need energy." says Joe, leading Nicky to the kitchen, where Nile and Booker are serving breakfast.
"You too, Joe." says Andy, positioning a stool next to Nicky. "Actually, we all need a good breakfast. So, let's sit down, eat, and prepare for what's ahead."
Despite Nicky's pleas for everyone to eat their meals in peace and not worry about him, each time a contraction hit him, forcing him to drop his fork, sway his body, and vocalize, the tension in the room was immediate. With each wave of pain, Joe's hands immediately went to Nicky's back, rubbing in circles, massaging. Anything to ease the painful sensation.
Catching Joe's attention, Booker murmured for him to instruct Nicky to breathe during the contractions. And Joe did so.
"It's okay, my love. You're okay. Just breathe. Breathe in and out, slowly."
"Hmm…" Nicky groaned.
"15 more seconds, Nicky. It's almost over," Andy said, looking at the clock. After a minute of intense pain, Nicky finally relaxed.
"Talk to me, Nicolò."
"I'm fine, Joe. But they're getting more intense."
"Do you think you could lie down for a bit? It would be great if you could sleep for at least a few hours."
"Joe's right, Nicky. You barely slept last night. You need to rest as much as you can." says Andy.
"I can try to lie down for a bit. Would you come with me, Joe?"
"Of course, my love. Come on, let me take you upstairs."
"You can go, we'll clean everything up." says Andy.
"Thank you." says Joe, leading Nicky to the couple's bedroom, while the rest of the group tidies up the kitchen.
When she makes sure Joe and Nicky are no longer around, Nile vents.
"I'm so nervous. It's so hard to see Nicky in so much pain."
"It's hard, but in the end, they'll have their baby in their arms," Booker says.
"I know, but even so. I can't even imagine what Joe is feeling. He must be freaking out."
"If he's not freaking out now, he will later. It's going to get much worse before it gets better," Andy says.
"I wish I could help more, but I don't know what to do. I've never had children or delivered a baby."
"Well, that's why we're all here. Each one can help in a way. You just need to find where you're needed. Right, Book?"
Booker smiles, but Andy's words leave him thoughtful.
Surprisingly, Nicky manages to sleep for almost four hours straight. It took him a while to find a comfortable position, but after tossing and turning in bed, he finally falls asleep. And Joe, as expected, spent the four hours watching over his sleeping husband.
Looking at Nicky with complete adoration, he tries to memorize every curve, every new contour that pregnancy has brought to the italian's body. His heart aches knowing that in a few hours the round belly that Joe has grown accustomed to cuddling for the past few months will no longer be there. The kicks, delivered against the palm of his hand every morning, will no longer wake him. Nicky's face will lose its cute round shape as the extra pounds from pregnancy disappear.
Joe isn't ready to lose this Nicky, but at the same time, he's anxious for the new version of his husband. Nicky the father. He can't wait to see Nicky holding his newborn baby for the first time. He doesn't know if his heart will be able to handle such a beautiful, immaculate image. When Nicky stirs in bed, still asleep, moans softly and places a hand on his belly, Joe is brought back to reality. There is still a long and painful road ahead before they can hold the baby in their arms. His hand joins Nicky's and he grimaces at how hard Nicky's belly is. How Nicky manages to sleep while enduring one painful contraction after another will always be a mystery to Joe. He is, without a doubt, the strongest man Joe has ever known.
Only when Nicky relaxes and drifts back into a deep sleep does Joe hear the light knock on the couple's bedroom door. He carefully gets out of bed so as not to disturb Nicky's sleep and walks to the door, where, to his surprise, Booker is waiting for him on the other side.
"Hi, how's Nicky?" the Frenchman asks, as Joe steps out of the room and closes the door behind him.
"He's fine. He's still sleeping, thank God."
"And the pain?"
"Contractions every eight minutes. He can still feel the pain, but I think his body has decided that sleep is more important at the moment."
"That's good. He needs to rest. And how are you?"
"As long as he's okay, I'll be okay."
"Well, I guess it's pointless to ask if you want me to stay with him while you eat something, so I brought you a sandwich and some coffee. You'll need all that energy later," he says, handing the plate to Joe. "And you can let him sleep as long as you can, but it's important that he eats something too."
"I know, but I don't want to wake him up now."
"No need. Just text me when he wakes up, and I'll bring him a sandwich or a smoothie. Whatever he prefers."
"Thanks, Booker."
"No problem. Oh, you don't have to do that if you don't want to, but during my wife's labors, she liked to have a wet towel on the back of her neck. She said it helped her relax. Rubbing her back during contractions also helped."
"Okay, I'll remember that."
"Right, we'll be downstairs if you need anything."
"Thanks." says Joe, going back to the room.
Twenty minutes later, Joe just finishes his sandwich when Nicky is awakened by a vicious contraction.
"Cazzo! Joe, help me!" he pleads urgently, leaving Joe terrified.
"Nicky, what's wrong? What happened?"
"I need to get up. Please, help me." Joe walks around the bed and helps Nicky to his feet.
Standing, Nicky puts his arms around Joe's shoulders, slightly opens his legs, and lets his body hang, swaying his hips rhythmically. During the peak of the contraction, Nicky's guttural groan intensifies.
"Breathe, Nicolò. Just breathe, okay?"
"Joe…" he cries softly.
"I'm right here with you. Just breathe."
"Joe… Joe… Joe…" he repeats, like a mantra.
"I'm here, Nicky. I'm here. Tell me how I can help?"
"Joe… Joe… Joe…"
"I can help you, my love. Just tell me how."
"Joe… Joe… Joe…"
"Please, my love. What can I do? How can I help?" Joe asks, terrified. He's about to scream for help when he hears the gush of fluid hit the floor.
"Oh, my God!" says Nicky, breathless. The relief in his voice is evident.
"Is this…?"
"My water broke. I'm sorry if I scared you, but I couldn't speak. It was such an intense feeling."
"It's okay, hayati. The important thing is that you're okay." he cups Nicky's face in his hands. "You're okay, right?"
"Yes, I'm okay. Things just… got more real now."
"I know. Our miracle is getting closer and closer." says Joe, planting a kiss on his husband's lips. "Well, I need to call Andy. Is it okay if I leave you alone for two minutes?"
"Yes, I'll be fine."
"I won't be long." says Joe, rushing out to find Andy.
Alone in the room, Nicky sits back on the bed and puts both hands on his belly.
"You're coming into my arms, tesoro. If I close my eyes, I can already see your face, smell your scent, hear your voice. I'm ready, little one. I'm ready to be your Papa."
Their brief moment is interrupted by Joe's return, who arrives accompanied by Andy.
"Hayati, I'm back. Andy's here." Joe hurries and kneels in front of his husband.
"Nicky, how are you feeling?"
"The contractions are getting quite strong. Water just broke."
"Okay. I really think I should check you." she says, but Nicky shakes his head.
"Not yet. I don't think I've made enough progress."
"Okay. What do you want to do?"
"First I need to take a shower. My pants are wet and I need to put on more comfortable clothes. Then I want to walk around a bit. I feel like I need to move."
"We can do that."
"Great. You two take a shower, while I ask Booker and Nile to help me get the room ready. We'll inflate the pool, put on the lights, and get everything ready for when you want to get in the water."
"Thank you, Andy." Nicky smiles as he makes his way towards the bathroom.
The cascade of hot water is like a balm for Nicky's aching muscles. With Joe hugging him from behind, he leans his head back, letting it rest on his husband's shoulder, while their hands come together on his belly. When Nicky's breathing changes, so does Joe's. He buries his nose in the Italian's wet hair and whispers words of encouragement.
"You're so strong, Nicky. You're doing so well. I love you so much," he says, while massaging the contracted belly.
They stayed in the shower for thirty minutes. Most of the time, Nicky spent in Joe's arms, clinging to his husband, receiving all his love and support. After Nicky's water broke, the pain of the contractions escalated exponentially. With each new wave, Nicky's body trembles, his moans grow louder, and Joe's heart breaks.
Nicky finally declares it's time to get out of the shower. Joe asks him to go back to bed and rest a little more, but he insists he needs to move around. So they decide to go back to the bedroom, change clothes, and walk around the house a bit. Covering Nicky with a large bath towel, Joe led his husband back to the bedroom. But as soon as they stepped out of the bathroom, Nicky is hit by a particularly brutal contraction. Feeling his knees buckle, he collapses to the ground, dragging Joe down with him in a desperate grip.
"Whoa, Nicky? Andy!” Joe panics.
"Easy, Joe.” says Andy, serenely.
She kneels beside Nicky, who remains on his hands and knees on the floor, groaning loudly and rocking his body.
"Can you talk to me, Nicky?" she asks, in a sweet tone rarely heard. Nicky shakes his head. "It's okay, you don't need to talk. I think you're in transition. It means things are really going to start speeding up. So I don't think you'll be able to walk around the house anymore. But, look, we've already got everything ready. So, if you want, you can get in the pool. What do you think?" when Nicky doesn't answer, but instead starts to cry, Joe's fear boils up.
"Nicky? Nicky, my love, what's wrong? Hey, look at me, habibi. Please, talk to me." unable to get a response from his husband, Joe seeks Andy's help. "What do I do, Andy?"
"Come on, Joe. Let Andy take care of Nicky for a few minutes." says Booker.
"No, I'm not going anywhere. I'm not leaving Nicky alone."
"It'll only be a few minutes. It'll be good for you." encourages Nile.
"It's okay, Joe. I can handle it. Take a break, breathe, drink some water, and come back."
"I don't want to leave him. What if…"
"Nothing will happen, I promise."
Joe hesitates for a few seconds, but ends up following Booker, leaving Nicky in Andy and Nile's care. They are halfway up the stairs when Joe stops and looks back, distressed. Booker can see the conflict in his brother's heart.
"It's just a glass of water. You'll be back there in no time."
In the kitchen, Joe leans over the counter while Booker pours two glasses of water.
"Here." he offers a glass to Joe.
"Thank you."
"When my wife was in labor, whenever the midwife saw that I was about to freak out, she would give me a task. She would tell me to boil water, put more wood on the fire, get clean towels. Anything so that I wouldn't get in the way or stress out my wife more."
"How did you manage? How did you do that three times? Every time he writhes in pain, I feel like I'm going to die. Fuck, he was crying in pain and I didn't… I lost it. I've seen him cry in pain before, but this… this is different. I don't know why, but it hit me differently."
"It is different. It's your husband and child up there. Nobody expects you to take this lightly, because nobody prepares you for the rawest, most visceral fear you'll ever feel in your life. Your whole heart is in that room. It doesn't matter that you know Nicky is the strongest man you know. Now your fear is telling you he isn't. Your fear is telling you he's fighting for his life, trying to deliver this baby."
"He asked me to believe in him. He asked me to believe that he can do this."
"Then believe in him. Focus on Nicky's voice saying that he can do this. And help him. Be his strength, his guiding light. I will be yours."
This is the Booker that Joe remembers. His fearless brother, who always had his back, who was always there for him. Joe looks into his eyes and recognizes the man with whom he shared his silly little bets, the man who calmed his nerves whenever Nicky took a long time to recover from an injury, the man who shares with him the passion for sports. This is the brother that Joe remembers. The brother that Joe desperately wanted to have back.
"Thank you." is all Joe can say.
"Come on, let's go back upstairs. Nicky must be asking for you."

Chapter Text
Joe climbs the stairs two steps at a time. He needs to see Nicky. He needs to know he is okay. He needs to tell him that he believes he can do this. Reaching the room, he finds Nicky in the same position, with his hands and knees on the floor. But, unlike before, Nicky now seems present, back in his body, truly conscious and answering some of Andy's questions. Hearing Joe approaching, he raises his head and smiles at his husband.
"Hi," he says, with a beautiful smile. Joe rushes to him, falls to his knees and pulls him into a hug.
"Oh, my heart! Please forgive me for leaving you alone. You asked me not to leave you, but I…"
"Joe. Joe, my love, please look at me." Nicky asks, with his hands on his husband's face. "I'm fine, baby is fine. I'm really glad you took these few minutes to breathe."
"It was… important." he says, glancing at Booker. "But I'm back, I'm here. And we're going to do this together, okay?"
"Okay."
"So where are we at? What are we doing?"
"Nicky just had a contraction. I was asking if he wanted to get in the pool." says Andy.
"Not now, . I know I won't be able to walk around the house, but I think I need to stand for a bit. To move the baby down."
"Come on, I'll help you up." with some difficulty, Joe helps Nicky to his feet. "Has Andy checked you yet?"
"Not yet. He prefers to wait a little longer."
"Okay. Are you hungry? You should eat something." says Joe.
"I can make a smoothie if you want, Nicky."
"Thanks, Nile. That would be great."
"I'll be right back." says Nile, heading to the kitchen.
Joe helps Nicky put on a robe and guides him to the bedside. And for the next three hours, they watch Nicky navigate one brutal contraction after another. Even with a heavy heart, Joe is amazed by Nicky's strength and his determination to bring his baby into the world in the most beautiful way possible.
As Nicky faces yet another violent contraction, which leaves him crouched on the floor, groaning loudly, Andy approaches Joe, who is glued to his husband.
"He's been in transition for over three hours, and the contractions are only going to get worse from here. I think he'll feel more comfortable if he gets in the pool," she says. Joe nods and turns his attention back to Nicky.
"Breathe, my love. Just a few more seconds and it'll be over. You're doing so well."
Joe guides Nicky through three more contractions until he gets his attention.
"You're back with me, habibi?"
"Yes," Nicky replies, breathless.
"Now would be a good time for you to get in the pool. Andy and Nile added more hot water. I think you'll feel better."
"Okay." Nicky's voice is shaky.
"Yeah? Come on, I'll help you."
After helping Nicky to his feet again, Joe removes his husband's bathrobe and guides him to the birthing pool set up in the middle of the couple's bedroom. With Joe's support, Nicky settles in, letting his body submerge in the warm water while his head rests on the edge of the pool. Kneeling outside, Joe holds Nicky's hand firmly with one hand, while the other massages his husband's belly, working in conjunction with the water to help him relax.
Every time Nicky grimaces in pain, Joe leans closer and whispers words of encouragement and love in his husband's ear.
"You're so strong, Nicolò. You're amazing. I love you so much. You're bringing our baby to us. I'm so proud of you."
But Joe isn't the only one tasked with helping Nicky during labor; the whole family has their duties. As the sun sets, Nile places some fairy lights and candles around the room, making the atmosphere as cozy as possible. Booker is responsible for ensuring that Joe and Nicky eat and drink, constantly bringing them snacks and beverages. And Andy keeps a close eye on Nicky, alert to any movement that might indicate he needs help.
Nicky is in the middle of a contraction when Booker approaches Joe and offers him a bowl of ice water and a washcloth. Joe waits for the contraction to end, and when Nicky finally relaxes, Joe wets the towel and places it on the back of his husband's neck. Nicky smiles.
"Thank you." he whispers.
"Of course, my love." Joe smiles and kisses his husband's forehead. Nicky's hand joins Joe's on his belly.
"Do you think the baby will have your eyes?"
"No, I think they will have your eyes. And your smile. Your beautiful smile. They might have my hair."
"I would love it if they had your curls."
"A baby with my curls and your eyes? Oh my goodness, will my heart be able to handle so much perfection?"
"I can't wait to see you being a Baba." Nicky's smile quickly turns into a grimace of pain as a new, intense contraction hits him. Joe tries to comfort him, but his own fear threatens to control him again.
"Andy, shouldn't this be almost over? We've been at this for almost 24 hours and we're not making any progress." he tries to keep his voice low, but his tone is harsh.
"We are making progress, Joe. These things take time, you know that."
"I know, but… can't you do something?" seeing the desperation in her brother's voice, Andy approaches the pool. She waits for the contraction to end, only then to get the Italian's attention.
"Nicky, I know you don't want to be examined right now, but I need to check the baby's position, okay? - she asks, stroking his hair. Nicky nods.
Trying to be as gentle as possible, Andy feels Nicky's belly in different places. Joe almost regrets asking for the woman's intervention when he sees Nicky's discomfort at having his sensitive abdomen pressed. The examination lasts a few seconds, but for the expectant parents it seems like an eternity.
"The baby is in the right position and getting lower. The head is already near the pelvis. It won't be long before you start pushing, Nicky." she says, and Nicky smiles, turning his attention back to Joe.
"Are you okay, my love?"
"Am I okay? You're the one in labor, I should be asking you that."
"I'm okay, Joe. It's hard, but I'm okay. Remember what we talked about? I can do this."
"I know you can. I never doubted it. But I can't bear to see you in so much pain. I want this to end. I want our baby here, in our arms. I… I want to help, but I don't know how."
"Here, give me your hand." Nicky guides Joe's hand to a spot on his belly. "The baby is kicking. They want it to be over too, they’re eager to meet us. Talk to our baby, Joe. Call them." Nicky asks. Joe take a deep breath and lean close to Nicky’s belly.
"Ya qalbi. My heart. Our miracle. We waited so long for you. Oh, how much we prayed to God to give us the gift of being your parents. It had to be you, my child. You were meant for us, and we were meant for you. I know that God Himself handpicked us to be a family. And you have no idea how much you are loved already. So come, light of my life. We are ready for you." with tears in his eyes, Joe leans down and plants a kiss on Nicky's belly.
Another hour passes and Nicky begins to get restless. He feels he can no longer find a comfortable position and that the warm water of the birthing pool no longer brings the relief it once did. To make matters worse, the contractions are coming every minute, making it impossible to rest between the pains.
"Andy…" he calls, at the end of another contraction. "I think I'm ready."
"Yeah? Do you want me to check you?"
"Yes, but I feel like I'm ready. Something is different."
"Okay. Joe, I need your help."
"Sure. What do I do?"
"I need you to get in the pool too. Sit and bring Nicky to rest against your chest, between your legs. I need him to be comfortable in that position." she says, while Joe gets into the instructed position.
"Like this?"
"That's right."
"Are you comfortable, habibi?"
"Yes, a little."
"I'll be quick, I promise. Tell me if it hurts."
With one hand on Nicky's belly, Andy uses her other hand to perform the pelvic exam. The position isn't the best, but she tries to be as quick and gentle as possible. Luckily, it doesn't take long for her to feel Nick's cervix and find that, in fact, he is ten centimeters dilated.
"You're right, Nicky. Ten centimeters. You're ready to push."
"Oh, thank the heavens." Joe sighs, kissing Nicky's temple.
"How do you want to do this? Do you want to stay in the pool or do you want to go to bed?"
"Here."
"Okay. You don't need to force the beginning. Stay there with Joe, relax, try to get comfortable and listen to your body. You're ready, but your body will tell you when to push.
"I'm here, habibi. I'm here and we're doing this together."
And Nicky did exactly that. Snuggled in Joe's arms, Nicky feels that the imminent birth of the baby has brought back the calm that had been lost hours before. With each contraction, he closes his eyes, takes a deep breath, and moans softly. Joe's hands never leave his belly, rubbing and massaging, trying to ease some of the pain. At the end of a contraction, Nicky feels something cold on his forehead. He opens his eyes and sees Booker wiping his face and neck with a wet towel. Beside him, Nile chooses a beautiful playlist of instrumental music, while Andy illuminates the pool so she can see the baby coming.
This is it. That's what Nicky wanted. His family by his side, during the most important moment of his life. He'd never felt so cared for and protected as he did now. This is the family he'd always wanted. Now he’s ready to bring this baby into the world. He feels the contraction and his body tells him it's time to push. He starts slowly, testing how far he can go. He pushes for ten seconds, until the contraction is over and his body relaxes again.
He closes his eyes again and hears Joe's voice whispering in his ear.
"I'm right here, my love. I'm right here with you. We're doing this together, okay?"
"Our baby is coming, Joe."
"I know, hayati. You're doing it. You're so strong, Nicolò, I love you so much."
Nicky pushes for 50 minutes non stop. He's exhausted, his whole body aches, and Joe feels him shaking in his arms, but Nicky doesn't give up. With each new wave, he gathers his strength and pushes, bringing his baby closer and closer.
"I can see the top of the baby's head. With the next contractions, you'll start crowning." Andy declares.
"Did you hear that, Nicky?" Joe kisses his husband's temple. "You're doing so good, my love. We're so close to meet our baby."
Three contractions later, Nicky begins to crown. Things get even more intense the moment Nicky feels the ring of fire. He writhes in the pool and grabs Joe's hands.
"Santa Madre di Dio, fa così male. Sta bruciando!"
"Lo so, amore mio. Lo so. Stringimi le mani. Sono qui con te, Nicolò. Sono qui."
"Baby is crowning, Nicky. Come on, push. You can do it." Andy says.
"I'm trying!"
"The head is almost out. On the next contraction, take a deep breath and push real good, okay?"
"Okay." Nicky says, breathless. He waits a few seconds, and when the contraction comes, Nicky pushes.
"That's it! Push, Nicky. Come on, push. The head is coming out. The baby has so much hair." Andy says.
"Come on, my love. You can do it. Squeeze my hand and push."
"Yes! The head is out. Good job, Nicky. Good job. Guys, the baby has a full head of hair." Andy cheers.
"Really?" Nicky asks.
"Here, give me your hand." Andy takes Nicky's hand and guides it to the middle of his legs." Touch your baby's head. Can you feel it?"
"Oh my God! Oh my God, Joe, it's our baby. Our baby is right here."
"You're doing it. You're bringing our baby to us. It's almost over, habibi. You're doing so well."
"Nicky." Andy calls, drawing the couple’s attention. "On the next contraction, I need you to push very slowly, okay?"
"Why?" Nicky asks.
"Andy, what's happening?" Joe feels his heart tighten.
"The baby has the cord wrapped around its neck twice. But it's not tight, I can untangle it. That's why I need Nicky to push real slowly. Push and blow, push and blow, okay?"
"Will the baby be okay?" Joe asks, almost panicking.
"Yes, the baby will be just fine, it's not a complication, Joe. Focus on Nicky, help him push slowly."
In his fearful state, Joe's eyes meet Booker's. He knows Booker has been through this, this same feeling of pure fear and helplessness. He went through it and overcame it. Booker faced the storm and came out of it with his children in his arms. So Joe needs to remember that picture, he needs his brother's reassurance that everything will be alright, and that in the end, he too will have Nicky and his baby in his arms.
Booker smiles at him and nods. He's being Joe's guiding light, just as he promised. And in that moment, he believes his brother. That small nod is the reassurance Joe needed. His heart overflowing with emotion, Joe wraps Nicky even tighter in his arms.
"Come on, love. We're doing this together. You and me. I'm right here." He feels Nicky tense up. "Little pushes, okay? Very slowly. Let Andy help our baby."
"It hurts too much."
"I know, my love. But I'm here, focus on me, focus on my voice."
"That's right, Nicky. Push very slowly, just a little more. That's it, now stop. Blow, okay? I need you to blow."
"I can't, I need to push."
"No, no, no. Focus on my voice. Blow like this, I'll do it with you." Joe starts blowing, encouraging Nicky to imitate him.
"Just a little more, I'm almost there." says Andy, working hard to loosen the cord from the baby's neck.
"It hurts." Nicky groans.
"I know, I know. But you're so strong, Nicky. You're incredible. You amazes me every day. Your strength, your kindness, your wisdom, your compassion, and your heart. Your beautiful heart, full of love. You took such good care of our miracle, and now you're bringing our precious baby into the world. I love you so much, Nicolò.
"I did it! The baby is free. Nicky, on the next contraction you can push with all you got."
"You can do it, Nicky!" Nile cheers beside Andy.
"We're all here with you, mon frère. - Booker adds.
And with the next contraction, Nicky takes a deep breath and pushes with all his might. He can feel the baby slowly leaving his body, and it's the most beautiful and terrifying sensation he's ever felt. In a few seconds, his baby will no longer be connected to him 24 hours a day, safe inside his belly, where he can feel its kicks and movements. This realization scares Nicky. But then he remembers that in a few seconds he'll be able to see Joe become a father. And he's been waiting for this moment for the last nine months. Oh, he can't wait to see Joe fall in love with his beautiful baby.
"Keep going, Nicky, keep going. The baby is coming. Push! Okay, now rest a little and breathe. The next one is the one. The baby is right here. With the next contraction, you'll get the baby out. Take a deep breath, and when the contraction comes, push."
"We're about to become parents, Joe."
"I'm so ready. You're my moon, Nicolò. I love you so much."he says, feeling Nicky tense up. It’s go time.
"That's it, Nicky! Big push, big push! Come on, give me your hands. Grab your baby," Andy says, guiding her brother's hands to the little body submerged in the pool water. "One more push and you can bring the baby to your chest. Push one more time, Nicky. Just one more time. That's it! That's your baby."
And with one last contraction, Nicky releases his baby's body. Immediately he brings the baby to his chest and bursts into tears. As if guided by his father's cries, the baby begins to cry too, and in seconds, the entire room is crying.
"You're here. Oh my God, you're here." says Nicky, through tears, hugging his baby.
"Guys, it's a girl." announces Andy. "You have a daughter."
"It's a girl, Joe. Our little girl."
"Let me see her. Let me see her." Joe leans slightly to the right, settling Nicky and the baby on his left side, where he can get a good view of his daughter's face. He bursts into tears."Oh, ya qalbi. You are beautiful. You are the most perfect vision. That's it, my love, show your voice to the world."
"Oh, piccola mia. Papà è qui. Il tuo Baba è qui. Ti amiamo così tanto, figlia. Ti abbiamo aspettata così a lungo."
"Is she okay, Andy?" Joe asks.
"She's perfect. She's absolutely perfect." Andy says, smiling, and he finally relaxes.
"You did it, my love. You created life. Look at her, Nicky. She's our miracle. Our daughter."
"She looks like a dream."
"But she's real. And she's here, in our arms." As Joe speaks, the baby stops crying.
"She likes the sound of your voice. Talk to her."
"Hi, baby girl. I'm your Baba. I'm the one who used to tell you stories every night. Do you remember me?."
"She's so small. So fragile. But then she looks at me and I can see the power and strength inside her. She has her Baba's fire, I know."
"And she has her Papa's heart and soul. She's the perfect combination of the two of us."
"She really is."
The little family remains like this, nestled and untouched, immersed in the purest love they have ever felt. Joe and Nicky memorize every feature of their daughter's face. They can't take their eyes off her. And it seems she can't take her eyes off her parents either. She is awake and alert, looking at them as if she understands every word spoken. Joe caresses the baby's cheeks with his fingertips and she sighs, snuggling against Nicky's chest.
They don't know how long they've been in their bubble, until Andy kneels beside them.
"Guys, sorry to interrupt your moment, but I need to check on Nicky," she says, putting Joe on alert again.
"Why? Is something wrong?"
"No, nothing's wrong. But 40 minutes have passed, and he should expel the placenta soon. How are you feeling, Nicky?"
"I feel good, but I'm starting to feel some cramps. Nothing intense yet."
"That's great. Do you want to try breastfeeding? That might help with the contractions."
"Okay."
"Joe, can you help Nicky positioning the baby?" Andy asks, and Joe changes position.
"Like this?"
"That's it. Support her head with this hand. Great, now let Nicky recline on you. Perfect. Are you comfortable, Nicky?"
"Yes, and I think she latched. She's nursing."
"Right off the bat. She's already so smart."
Nicky breastfeeds his daughter for another thirty minutes until he starts feeling stronger contractions again.
"Joe, can you hold her? I don't want to squeeze her."
"Are you having contractions again?"
"Yes, and I think I need to push."
"Andy!" Joe calls.
"Right here. Joe, take the baby." she asks, helping pass the baby to Joe's arms. "Nicky, this part is easier than the birth. Can you get on your knees? I think it will be easier."
"Yes, but I need help."
"I can help." says Joe.
"No, I need you to stay with our daughter."
"Booker can help. Is that okay?" Andy says, and everyone looks at Joe.
"Yes, of course. I can't go far because of the cord."
"No, you can stay right there. Book, help me get Nicky on his knees. Hold him on the right side, I'll take the left. Let's lift him slowly, if we go too fast, he might get dizzy. That's right, just on his knees. Ready?"
"Ready." carefully, Booker helps Nicky change position. Even going as slowly as possible, Booker still feels Nicky swaying a little. "Are you okay, Nicky?"
"Yes, I got a little dizzy, but it's gone now. I'm fine."
"It’s okay, I'm here. Hold on to me."
"Thank you.
"Okay, Nicky, when you feel the contraction, just push. It won't be as hard as childbirth." says Andy, massaging his now soft belly. Nicky grimaces in pain.
"Squeeze my hand, Nicky." Booker says.
"That's it, Nicky, push. Push. Very good, rest a little."
"You're doing great, habibi. Just one more and it'll be over." Joe says, with his daughter in his arms.
"Good, Nicky, push. Just a little more. Nile, give me the bowl." reaching for the container, Andy positions it between Nicky's legs. On the next push, the placenta falls straight into the bowl. "And we're done! Very good, Nicky, now it's over."
"Oh, grazie a Dio."
" Is he okay?" Joe asks, anxiously.
"He's great. Now we can cut the cord. Joe, will you do the honors?"
"I don't want to hurt her."
"You won't. Here, just cut between the two ends." Andy instructs him and Joe cuts the cord. With the baby disconnected from Nicky, Joe can move and get out of the pool.
"Here, Joe, cover her with this blanket. She needs to stay warm." Nile hands a cozy blanket to the new father.
"Thank you, Nile."
"Can I see her?"
"Of course." he tilts his daughter so the young immortal can see her.
"Oh, she's so beautiful. She looks just like Nicky."
"I thought so too."
"Hi, little girl. I'm your Aunt Nile. I'm so happy you're finally here. I will love and protect you forever. I promise." Nile's words move Joe. He pulls his younger sister into a hug and kisses her forehead.
With Andy and Booker's help, Nicky takes a quick shower, puts on clean clothes, and settles back into bed. Once he's sure his husband is comfortable, Joe returns their daughter to his arms and sits down beside them. The baby, who had started to fuss, calms down again on her father's chest.
"I think she missed you."
"I certainly missed her." Nicky rubs his nose against his daughter's little head. "She needs a name."
"Have you thought of anything?" Andy asks.
Joe looks out the window. The first rays of sunlight begin to illuminate the new day. It's the dawn of a new life. He smiles.
"Aurora. Her name is Aurora," he declares. Nicky looks at his daughter and smiles.
"Welcome to the world, Aurora."
Joe needed convincing to leave Nicky and Aurora for a few minutes to take a shower. Even with Andy promising to stay with them the whole time, Joe still felt uneasy. But he took advantage of the fact that Aurora was sleeping peacefully in Nicky's arms to muster the courage to leave the room for a few minutes. With Joe in the shower and Nile and Booker preparing lunch, Andy and Nicky were left alone, watching the baby.
"Nile is right, she looks just like you. Does she have green eyes?"
"I think so. They looked green when she was looking at me earlier." he caresses his daughter's face. "She's sleeping so soundly."
"That's because she knows she's safe in her Papa's arms."
"She's been here for less than six hours and I already know I would do absolutely anything for her. She has my heart, my soul, my everything. How is that possible? I've been on this earth for a thousand years and I've never felt a feeling like this. She is all and she is more.
"This little girl is so lucky to have you."
"No, we're the lucky ones that she chose us," he says, and Andy smiles.
"Of course she saw."
"What?"
"Quynh. Of course she saw a baby in your future. You and Joe were born for this."
"She would find all this so funny."
"She would be so happy for you."
"We need to find her, Andy."
"I know. We will find her."
Five minutes later, Joe is back in the room. Andy hugs him and heads downstairs, giving the couple privacy. Joe settles down next to Nicky, putting a protective arm around them both.
"Is it crazy how much I already love her? I look at her and I can't remember a life where she didn't exist."
"I know exactly what you're talking about."
"But what about you, habibi? How are you feeling?"
"I feel good. Tired, but fulfilled."
"You know, Nicolò, I've never loved you as much as I do now. What you did was supernatural, superhuman, you're a force of nature. Seeing you do what you just did… I've never felt so much fear and pride and admiration like this."
"I did what I needed to do." he says, and looks at his husband."Thank you, Joe."
"For what?"
"For staying with me, even when you were scared. For believing in me. I wouldn't have made it without your support. And I'm glad you had that kind of support too."
"Did you ask Booker to take care of me?"
"I didn't need to. He saw himself in you at that moment, and remembered everything he felt when his children were born. It's instinctive." says Nicky, and Joe finally understands.
"It was for me, wasn't it? I thought you wanted Booker here for you, but you wanted him here for me."
"He's your brother. You needed your brother." he says, and Joe smiles.
"You're a wise man, Nicolò di Genova."
"I've been told that before."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
"Is it okay if I go downstairs for a bit? Will you two be alright?"
"Yes. She just nursed and is fast asleep, so I'm going to take advantage of this and try to get some sleep too. Can you help me put her in the cot?
"Sure, give her to me." carefully, Joe takes Aurora from Nicky's arms and transfers her to the cot positioned next to the bed. The baby barely moves.
"Call me if you need anything?"
"Sure."
He gives Nicky another kiss on the lips and leaves the room, heading downstairs. Arriving in the living room, he finds Andy sitting on the sofa, eating a sandwich, Nile on her phone, and Booker coming from the kitchen with a cup of coffee in his hand.
"How are Nicky and Aurora?" Andy asks.
"They're fine. Nicky is going to rest a bit, while she’s asleep."
"Are you hungry? There's food in the fridge," Nile says.
"Maybe later."
Joe goes to the TV, turns it on, and sits on the sofa.
"Hey!" he calls Booker's attention. "The Champions League final is on."
Booker freezes for a few seconds. He imagined this moment very differently in his mind. He imagined tears, screams, arguments, pleas, promises, and, hopefully, hugs. But he accepts what he has. The "how" doesn't matter. He smiles and takes his place next to Joe. Together, they watch the game.
