Work Text:

It all started when he wandered into his second in command’s chamber, where Mairon was supposed to be busy with some boring documents, which were probably completely unimportant. Mairon had a paranoia about documents. As if there was anyone who would dare to ask him, Melkor, about his paperwork! Ha!

This time Mairon was not busy with doing pointless calculations or plans.

He was sitting in his big, gray armchair, wrapped into a long, black blanket so thick that he looked like a small, tired larva in its pupae, half way into the transformation which would change the little, swell body into a beautiful shape of a moth.

He was clearly comfortable.

“My lord?” Mairon asked, sounding as if he was sleepy, moving a little in the armchair. “Do you need something from this lowly servant?”

Melkor didn’t believe that Mairon, who was so proud and beautiful, could truly think this way about himself. But it was good and satisfying that he remembered where his place was.

Melkor wanted to say something, but then he noticed a familiar, frozen-like pattern on the edge of black blanket.

He blinked, confused.

“Is that my cape?”

Mairon froze, opening his eyes wide. With blush treacherously growing on his cheeks, he fixed the black material around himself, hiding the delicate pattern of silver.

“...No?” He spoke, although this time his famous ability to lie failed completely. His face looked way too red.

For a while Melkor stood in place, trying to decide what he was supposed to do. At the end he decided to go away and left his second in command some pride.

He couldn’t remind himself why he wanted to see Mairon anyway.

He probably just wanted to see his fire maia. He was doing it sometimes just because Mairon was the prettiest among the creatures which lived in Utumno. Melkor liked to look at him the same way he liked to look at the jewelry and gold in his vault. Just to admire the beauty and shine.
