“I can do it!” Tommy interrupted, his voice small but firm. “Everyone thinks we’re cowards now, right? Since you’re not doing it anymore. People say stuff in the halls, Wil. They say the royal family’s weak. But if someone younger joined, and if he trained really hard… maybe people would stop saying that.”
Wilbur studied him in silence, his chest tightening. He could see the determination in Tommy’s eyes, the same kind he had once carried himself. It wasn’t pride, not really. It was desperation to be seen, to be enough.
“Tommy,” Wilbur said softly. “You can’t. You’re too young.”
Tommy frowned, his lower lip jutting out. “Why not? You were gonna do it.”
