Chapter Text
The house was clean, really clean. It smelt like bleach and sanitizer to the point Amity wasn’t sure she could even recognize it anymore. Her room sat on the far end of the hall. She sighed, making her way. She passed by four empty rooms she dared not to open.
Opening the door, the room was swept clean aside from her items in multiple boxes. She sat down at her bed, feeling a sense of deja vu. She turned to the vanity her mother had already installed, a big white mirror that can reflect your whole being along with a side compartment for makeup, brushes and more.
Amity turned her attention to the boxes this time. Amity-Clothes, Amity-Photos/Magazines, Amity-Extra. She made her way to the corner of the room when Odalia suddenly shouted for her. “MITTENS! The cover called! they changed the concept so we need you to go back to fitting!”
Amity sighed, making her way down with the boxes untouched. “Yes mother.”
❖
School the next day was louder than usual. “It’s really her-” “I saw her on-” “I heard she-” “Such a bitch-” “OMG! I-”
Definitely louder. Every turn felt like a stage and not in the spotlight way, it was suffocating. Amity felt exhaustion cling to her bones and it wasn’t even lunch yet.
Classes blurred together until it was finally time for lunch. She went back to the same old stop under the tree in the school yard. It was relaxing and she finally felt like she could breathe. Amity took out her headphones and tuned everything out as she began to eat.
Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a trio whispering to each other. A brunette with a wide smile—tugging on another girl— The black haired girl didn’t react much to the tug, instead opting to stare at Amity, a dark skinned boy matched the brunette’s energy, bouncing in place as everyone interacted.
As Amity and the black hair made eye contact, the latter didn’t back down until Amity was the first to tear her eyes away. ‘Where had I seen this girl before? She’s familiar but I can't place her.’
❖
“Okay class, For this project you will be partnered up. Your goal is to research and make an essay connected to the topic assigned to you. Remember, the essay must show ties connected to our topic.”
Amity sighed in her mind, duo or group projects weren’t uncommon in school, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t exhausting. She had zoned out and just barely heard her name.
“Amity B- uh Meadows and Augustus Porter”
Amity looked up at the unfamiliar sounding name. Everyone had started to move and sit next to their partners while she remained seated. “Hi! I’m Augustus, but my friends call me Gus.” The same dark skinned boy from the yard sat next to Amity.
“You’re the boy in the yard during lunch,” Amity raised a brow. Augustus paused and chuckled nervously. “So you noticed huh? Sorry it's just— it’s not everyday that someone as popular as you transfers to school. You’re like really well known, it’s nice to finally put a face to the name. Actually your face is well known— I meant that y’know—”
“Likewise,” Amity cut him off. “the essay?” Augustus turned red with embarrassment. “Right! Sorry, I got distracted. So the—”
All in all Augustus was a good person, She could see that rather clearly. A very passionate man to put it. Having skipped a grade and considered a prodigy. He’s tolerable, to put it lightly.
The last bell rang and everyone started making their way out. “That went by fast,” Augustus mumbled with a pout. “Can I maybe get your number? Just to talk about the project! I don’t spam people with outrageous messages, trust me. Though if it was one of my friends it would be different, like this one time me and L-” Amity placed her phone down, making Augustus shut up, “Just type yours instead.” Augustus nodded sheepishly, “Sorry my friends have started rubbing off on me,”Amity waited until Augustus had finished typing before she took her phone back and walked away.
❖
Amity cleaned up her bag and locker before making her way to the parking lot. Seeing on her phone that the driver was still rather far away gave her time to reflect. Augustus was… different, a good type of different in a way. He seemed sweet, a good friend(?).
That didn’t answer why he and his supposed friend group were staring at her during lunch, as much as she wanted to ignore it. The black haired had caught her eye, why did she seem so familiar? Most importantly was the brunette—The girl seemed the brightest, something about her was engaging, similar to the black haired, she also seemed familiar. Like they have been there for her before.
Amity couldn’t stop dwelling on that small moment. It was on the tip of her mind but she couldn’t pin point it. It was like they had been someone important she promised to never forget. If that promise was made, she’d have to apologize as she hasn’t been upholding that promise.
her phone dinged with a message from the driver. As much as she wanted to sigh out of relief, she had a photoshoot to go to. Her feet started to move. As she walked she heard a name come out of someone's mouth that made her pause. “Blight?” Her feet hesitated when making a step yet continued to make their way away from the source, not looking back to see who it was.
No one has called her by that last name since the separation.
