The Deer’s Mate

Summary:

There was a prophecy. A creature long banished from their town would come and claim a Morningstar as theirs. They would be destined to be his mate. When Charlotte Morningstar was born her father began to fear the worst.

Lucifer Morningstar had long heard the tales of the demon-like creature that had terrorized his family’s village, years before he was born. The being had cursed his family tree for his exile and now with his daughter, the first female born directly within the line it could only mean that she was doomed to be the creature’s bride.

Chapter Text

When the demon comes back, a Morningstar will be his mate.

Eight-year-old Lucifer Morningstar whimpered from the story his father was telling him and his twin brother, Michael in their bedroom.

The small boy questioned, “Do you really think he’ll come back?”

Their father responded, “Make no mistake boy, he will. My father, and his father before him have all warned the story to be true. Our ancestors needed to defeat the monster from further bloodshed amongst our village. The village that we swore to protect with our lives, no matter the cost.”

Michael questioned, “So why hasn’t he come yet? Why must we wait until then?”

“Because there is no daughter from the Morningstar line. So, there has been no bride and we should be glad for that. However, that’s doesn’t mean it won’t happen and you must be aware of that fact once you have grown and get married yourselves.”

Lucifer clutched his bedsheets and dared to ask, “But what if we chose not to have children? Would that not break the curse?”

His father heatedly responded, “And let the beast win through such cowardice?! Our village needs our leadership! To eliminate our line would be disastrous!”

“I… I just thought…”

“Think with your head boy and not these foolish fantasies!”

Lucifer gulped, “Yes Father…”

Twenty years later, Lucifer grew up, got married to his childhood best friend, Lilith and become an important figure among the villagers as he and his twin were the new heads of the village council when their father passed on. Sera was one of the elders that served the previous leader and took her duties seriously including keeping the records of the village’s history safe with the prophecy being at the forefront as Lucifer and Michael’s wives are now expecting which meant there will be two new Morningstars born around the same time just as their fathers had been.

History clearly repeating itself.

Michael and Lucifer’s births had been omens too as there was two of them and there had been a solar eclipse on the day they were born but as they had been both boys the fears were quickly dispersed and life in the village continued on.

Then on the day the babies were to arrive, tragedy struck the Morningstar household.

Michael’s wife gave birth to a stillborn child that could’ve been a son had it lived. As for Lucifer’s wife…

Lilith held strong, the baby was having a hard time coming out but she pushed through even though the doctor was advising her not to for it could cost her own life. Lilith didn’t care, this child needed to come.

And so it did, with a large wail.

The babe was wrapped in a cloth and was presented to Lucifer with tears in his eyes.

Soon after, he received the bad news that Lilith had passed on, knowing how brave she was to give birth to their little miracle.

Then… later that night, Lucifer finally saw what gender his child was and it made him break down onto the floor.

The Fates were far cruel to him! First, he loses his wife and now… he will lose his only child to a monster! WHY?!

He cried on for the rest of the night.

Charlotte or Charlie Morningstar as she liked to be called grew up in the village with looks of pity surrounding her and she never knew why.

That was because Lucifer, Michael, and Sera had ordered every adult in the town to never utter a word to her or their children and do so would mean severe consequences because that little girl deserved a happy childhood before she would be faced with her cruel destiny.

Lucifer took it upon himself to make sure his daughter would be content in any way he can shortly after her birth because he loved her from first sight and he would honor Lilith’s sacrifice for bringing their daughter into the world.

Growing up, Charlie became best friends with Sera’s relative Emily and Adam’s son, Abel and would on occasion play with Adam’s ward and apprentice, Vaggie when the girl was allowed free time.

When her eighteenth birthday came, Lucifer began to fret that the monster would be coming for her soon, then another year passed, then another, and now upon reaching her twenty-first birthday, the monster still hadn’t shown up.

At a council meeting one night, Adam haughtily comments, “Maybe the beast is into old maids.”

Lucifer went on a rant as his twin had to hold him back from punching Adam square in the face.

Sera motioned, “If anything the monster does seem to have standards when it comes to the bride’s age so let us be grateful for that much.”

“Believe me, I’m super grateful for that.” Luci voiced, for every year gives him more time to prepare Charlie for the worse, he knows he needs to tell her before it’s too late. He wishes they could run away from here and have a peaceful life somewhere else but the monster would no doubt find them so it would be pointless.

Sera gestures, “Now then, there is the matter of the Harvest Festival coming and as you all know it will be a special occasion this year as it will the 300th anniversary of our town’s founding. And already Emily and Charlie has given me suggestions on how the event should go.”

Lucifer smiled fondly, “Of course they have.”

“So, all in favor to let them plan the event, say aye.”

Lucifer, Michael, and Peter voiced the word without delay while Adam just rolled his eyes.

Sera turned to him, “And Adam I expect full security from our patrols.”

“Sure thing! Won’t be an issue!” he turned to his lieutenant in the corner, “Right, Lute?”

“That’s right, sir.”

“Very good, this meeting is now adjourned.”

“Sing? At the festival? Oh, I don’t know about that honey.” Lucifer rubbed his head; they had just finished eating dinner when Charlie brought the suggestion up. “I haven’t sung out in public in years.”

“But you have such a beautiful voice!” she insisted.

“And so do you! Why not have it be you or Emily?”

“Because, Em will be too busy trying make sure everyone has a good time and I…” her cheeks turned pink, “there’s someone I want to spread time with at the festival.”

Lucifer was utterly stunned and heartbroken at the same time for his not so little girl. If there was someone she had feelings for then by god she deserves that much before she gets taken away by a heartless monster!

He sniffled at the thought.

“Dad? What’s wrong?”

“Nothing! Nothing! Just that… I’m really happy for you baby.”

They went into a tight embrace and Lucifer never wanted to let go.

Lucifer was at the back of the built stage in the main square all dressed up in blue and white, in a hybrid outfit crossed between a dress and suit that Charlie had made for him. It was fitting as he had to be both mother and father to her over the years and his song would be his tribute to her as she deserves every last bit of happiness before that demon finally shows up.

Suddenly he felt a chill and turned to where the forest was that was close to the village. He saw nothing there but felt like he was being watched by someone or something. Then for a brief moment he thought he saw antlers before snapping out of it when Emily called for him.

He slowly looked away from the woods before getting on stage. He saw Charlie in the front row holding hands with Maggie? No wait Vaggie! Aw, that’s so sweet, he didn’t know she liked girls too, he was just so sorry that they won’t be able go further in their relationship, it was just so unfair.

And so, he poured his heart and soul out into this song, stunning the crowd as he did so and Charlie had tears coming out of her eyes.

He was almost to the end of his song as he had his eyes close when suddenly there were gasps and screams and he bumped into someone who took hold of his waist and dipped him, he opened his eyes in shock of a man that looked demonic with deer features around his body, his antlers especially were reaching for the sky and a large maniacal grin spread across his face that was quite frightening to look at.

The creature said, “Hello, Mate.”

Lucifer gasped, “Wha- what?!”

The next thing he knew darkness was surrounding him and the monster.

Chapter Text

It all happened at once; Lucifer was singing his heart out on the stage when out of nowhere a creature of unspeakable means appeared beside Lucifer and took hold of him and they both disappeared without a trace.

Sera called for an emergency meeting after cancelling the rest of the festival and had Charlie, Emily, and Abel attend so they can understand the gravity of the situation.

“You mean…? It was supposed to be me?!” Charlie cried out.

“Or so we all thought.” Sera responded, “As we assumed it would be a bride that the monster would want and as the only daughter born into the Morningstar clan in a very long time it was the obvious choice but now this has changed all meaning to the prophecy we once knew.”

“But why now? Why would it take my dad now of all times?”

“That is indeed the question. And I wish I had an answer I could give you.”

“Why didn’t he tell me any of this?!” Charlie blubbered.

Michael took hold of her, “Because we all agreed that you deserved to live your life without fear getting in the way especially if you were going end up living with that monster anyway. It pained Lucifer to no end of the secret he was forced to keep from you.”

“But he should have told me now that I am grown!”

“And he was trying to but for any parent it is a difficult subject to bring up, telling your only child that they must become a beast’s mate. Lu and I grew up with those legends and they scared him to no end, so I know exactly how hard it was for him tell you the truth, so please don’t be too upset with him. Now that we know it is him the monster wishes to claim as his own.”

“Yes, you’re right, thank you uncle.” She wiped her eyes, “I need to go find him!”

Sera nodded and commanded to their head guard, “Adam, have search parties scour the entire forest! It is clear now that fate has a different plan in mind and we need answers.”

Vaggie was scowling in line with the rest of the border patrol when she heard that and shouted, “So if it had been Charlie, you would have let the monster take her?!”

Adam pointed, “Uh yeah, because obviously we thought the monster would want someone breedable? Didn’t think his tastes would be into old men like Lucifer.”

Abel grimaced at his dad’s wording while Emily was frowning in disapproval.

Charlie was grateful for Vaggie’s words as well as being disturbed by how the council was alright with these double standards of letting someone like her being forced to accept her fate but once it was a man like her dad suddenly it was a crisis. But she will have to address that later, right now she needed to go save her dad from whatever that monster had planned, no matter what.

Lucifer groaned awake realizing he was in someone’s arms in the midst of the dense forest.

“Ah. Awake at last, I see.” The voice above him said.

Lucifer looked, seeing the creature he heard tales of in his youth, the ones that gave him nightmares in his childhood to all the way in his adult years when the nightmares became about Charlie being stolen away. Never in a million years had he imagine that the creature would take him in exchange.

All at once immense relief filled him, making him utter as tears of joy formed in his eyes, “Thank you…”

“Oh?” the creature was surprised.

“For not taking my daughter. I will happily trade my life for hers.”

The creature let out a guffaw, confusing Lucifer.

“Oh darling… it was never going to be Charlie.” Making that maniacal smile again.

“Wait what? And how did you know-“

“It was always going to be you.”

There was a long pause between them as Lucifer processed that information before he shouted out.

“WHAT?! But you let me get married and have a kid! Why didn’t you take me sooner?”

“I was tempted to, I was ready to take you after your twenty-first birthday but then I decided that the village still didn’t learn it’s lesson from last time, after all they made quite the assumption that I would pick the first female born from the Morningstars. Such archaic thinking if you ask me. So, I made sure that you and your wife would have a daughter; to make them sweat and think it would be Charlie.”

“YOU-” Lucifer struggled out of the creature’s hold, landing on the ground, yelling, “YOU MEAN YOU WERE PLAYING A FUCKING GAME WITH US?! MAKING ME HAVE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS THINKING MY DAUGHTER WAS YOUR PRIZE!” Then a horrible thought occurred to him making him scream with tears in his eyes, “ARE YOU THE REASON MY WIFE DIED FROM CHILDBIRTH BECAUSE YOU NEEDED ME TO BE SINGLE?!” he panted heavily waiting for the creature to answer. Who did respond in an eerily calm manner.

“You did not need to be single to be my mate, the prophecy doesn’t say anything about marriage. And I did not anticipate your wife’s complications if anything I commend her for her sacrifice just so Charlie could have a chance at life.”

Lucifer stood there stunned, this creature, this demon… was nothing like he was told he would be. Oh, he was still a monster that much was true but there was an air of sensibility around… this person? If he can even call him that.

“Okay then…” Luci cleared his throat, “So why was it you chose me?”

The creature leaned over coming face to face with the shorter man, “Honestly, I was never going to choose anyone.”

Lucifer blinked, “Wha- seriously? But then why-“

Lucifer.” the creature’s eyes glowed red in warning.

Lucifer went quiet, listening carefully to what the demon would say.

“As I was saying, I was never going to let the prophecy come to past as it was rather more enjoyable watching the Morningstars squirm at the very thought I would come back some day. But then one day, a solar eclipse happened right on the day you and your twin were born, quite the unusual phenomenon that I knew there was potential to be had so I had watched carefully of how you would come about. There is magic within you and I can help you tap into it.”

Lucifer’s eyes widen and would have said something had the creature not had a claw finger up, telling him to stay quiet for he was not done explaining yet.

“How did I know it would be you and not your twin? Simple, you were far more entuned with nature than he was, the days you would play and sing in the forest are proof of that, the animals and the plants were drawn to you. You were meant to be a fae just as I am.”

“So… you only want me for my power.” Lucifer dared to voice.

The creature shrugged, “Mostly yes, but you amuse me as well, and…” he leaned into his ear, whispering lowly, “This isn’t the first time we met.”

Lucifer gawked, “How- what-“

“Think back, was there an unusual animal that came to you in your youth?” letting him connect the dots.

Lucifer did remember. A red stag. He had just turned fourteen and he was in the meadow when he spotted it and carefully approached it as it stood still. He gently reached out to touch the buck’s muzzle as it let him.

“And that wasn’t the only time you saw it, did you?”

Yes, it was on a picnic he was having with a two-year-old Charlie, he was lying on the blanket, shutting his eyes to relax, not seeing his daughter walking away until it was too late. He started to panic and was about to go after her when he saw her giggling at a red stag and touching his muzzle before it gently nudged her to go back to her father.

“You were quite careless with her at times that it’s a miracle she even survived to adulthood. Good thing I was around to act as her guardian angel.”

Lucifer frowned while asking, “Just who are you? Do you even have a name?”

“Ah, yes, they never do give my name in those stories, do they? I am Alastor.”

“Alastor? Really? I was expecting something more menacing.” The blonde cheekily said.

“How quaint of you to say.” Still giving off that unsettling smile, “I do hope you remember that you are still within my custody and I could easily keep you locked away without letting you have the chance to see your daughter again.”

“Wait… you would let me go back?”

“Only if you agree to let me train you and do one small favor for me will I let you go back to that awful place.”

Lucifer was stunned, that means he could go back home and never again will the Morningstars have to worry about the prophecy coming true because it would already be completed!

“But that means I won’t be your mate anymore.”

“That’s right, and your family’s curse will finally be lifted. So… do we have an agreement?” holding his clawed hand out.

Lucifer looked at it before reaching back and took it, a green glow surrounded their joined hands before it faded and Alastor let go.

“The oath has been sealed, now come let me take you to my home so that we may begin your training.” As the demon started walking forward.

Lucifer stood there and looked back.

I’ll be back, Charlie. This I swear. He silently promised.

Then he started following after the creature, awaiting to see what it had in store for him.

Chapter Text

Alastor faced the witch with a scowl on his face.

“How dare you place that curse on me and those insufferable Morningstars!”

The woman giggled, “You said you wanted to teach them a lesson they’ll never forget, well what better way to do that than to have them think one of their own will become the mate to a monster like you? It’s common fear tactics my dear friend.”

“I would hardly call us friends when all you’re doing is indulging in your foolish fantasies of a romance that will obviously never be.”

“But they won’t know that now will they? You win either way.” She grinned mischievously.

Alastor turned stone face, she wasn’t wrong in that assessment, so alright let her have her fun with this. It doesn’t matter anyway in the long run, he got what he wanted, fear installed in that posh family and the village as a whole with the looming threat of him coming back one day. He won’t, he knows he won’t. But as long as they don’t know that then that’s all that matters.

“What do you mean two Morningstars were born on the solar eclipse?!”

“Well, I was just as surprised as you are! Never thought that could happen and yet here we are, guess they are destined to join the faes as you did, Mister Born-on-a-Blood-Moon-Eclipse.”

Alastor snarled in annoyance, “This is no doubt your fault regarding the curse. Eventually it would have forced me to complete it.”

“Alas prophecies are a bitch like that.” She nodded before grinning evilly, “Guess this means you’ll have to watch over those little tykes until one of them is old enough to go with you.”

“The only thing I will be doing is gain access to their power and nothing more. Once I finally have what I want, I will no longer have to worry about any Morningstar becoming my so-called mate.”

Lucifer Morningstar truly was a most curious child. The energy trapped within him burned brightly and yet he could not do anything with it other than play outside and be around the woodland animals and giving the plants more to grow from. He had a gift that was being wasted in his human state.

His twin brother on the other hand had no such talent, which is quite interesting as someone who was also born on the solar eclipse you would think he would have some kind of power too but no it was like one twin took more than they should have…

How fascinating.

As the years flew by, Lucifer was teased by the village children for being too strange for their tastes, and that brute Adam certainly loved to push him around making Lucifer cry and get scolded by his father afterwards for not being tough enough to handle it. Truly a sad existence for the boy.

You don’t belong there. Was all Alastor could think about in those moments.

The only source of happiness the boy got was being the forest and talking with a girl that helped him to calm down and they became fast friends because of that.

Lilith was easily the most beautiful and sought out girl in the whole village, and it was Lucifer that captured her interest and heart, not even Adam could woo her over. So, Lucifer indeed got the last laugh over his bullies.

They were in the midst of courtship when Lucifer turned twenty-one, and Alastor knew he had to make a choice, as per the curse he had every right to take Lucifer before his soon-to-be wedding with Lilith but… he had heard of what the old Morningstar patriarch had told Lucifer and his brother and really how could he not use this as an opportunity to really stick it to the village for thinking such stupid things.

So, he needed Lucifer and Lilith to have a child and he will make sure that it would be a girl.

Perhaps it was just as well that he let Lucifer have a life with the woman he loved because he just wanted one thing from the man and that was his magic as he had no desire to keep him as a mate any longer than he had to. When he does take him, Lilith wouldn’t have to wait long to have him back.

But of course, life had other plans.

Thankfully Charlie still came into the world but her mother was long gone after the birth.

Part of him wonders if that was his fault due to tampering with the child’s gender, so it was only fair that he helped looked after that little girl especially when Lucifer was too tired some days like that time they had a picnic and the child ran straight for the woods that he had to intervene in his stag form to keep her from going any further.

And so, he watched over the little family over the years and with Charlie being close to adulthood, he knew it would be almost time to make his grand appearance. And that chance came shortly after her twenty-first birthday, poetic as he almost did take Lucifer on his twenty-first so everything has finally come full circle and with the upcoming 300th anniversary of the town’s founding it was all the more better.

And a perfect way for the town to witness his comeback was to put the suggestion in Charlie’s head to get her father to sing on stage while she was planning for the festival.

Once he saw Lucifer on that stage, it was time to strike and hearing those gasps and screams were so satisfying to hear.

But the look on Lucifer’s face was far more precious before he spirited them away with the use of his shadows.

“Here we are.” Alastor motioned to the stone castle before them.

Lucifer stood there, raising his brow at him, “This is where you have been since your defeat from the village?”

“I was not defeated but yes, it has been a very tranquil existence.”

“You definitely are nothing like what the tales made you out to be.”

Alastor chuckled deeply, “Oh I can assure you. I am.” His eyes glowed red.

He moved to open the large hard wood doors, and bowed to let Lucifer go in first.

Luci did and saw the rustic décor surrounding the main area with a large fireplace and comfy armchairs in front of it. There were suits of armor in place and candleholders too.

Alastor joined him and gave him a quick tour of where everything was at like the dining hall and kitchen. Then they went upstairs and was shown the common rooms for different purposes such as a drawing room and a music room. After he was shown the study and the library, Alastor took Lucifer down a hallway and opened a door.

“This shall be your room for the time being.”

Lucifer looked in to see a room fit for a king, as it was with a king-sized canopy bed with red velvet curtains, a wardrobe and dresser that was just as large with an assortment of outfits for him to try on- some more flamboyant than others. And wooden carvings of ducks that surrounded the place.

Lucifer went to one of the ducks in shock as Alastor explained, “I figured that would give you some comfort while you were here, you always did love watching the ducks in the pond as a child.”

“Fucking hell… you really have been watching all this time.” The blonde uttered in frightened disbelief.

“And as I have said, there is only your magic I am most interested in, the whole thing about being my mate was just semantics to get you here.”

Lucifer frowned, “So when you took me on stage, that was all for show?”

“To further drive fear into the hearts of those villagers? Why certainly.”

Fuck, this creature was far more dangerous than Lucifer anticipated, he had been expecting a blood thirsty monster driven by pure instinct not some mastermind that pulled people along like they were puppets on strings.

All the more reason he was so happy it was him and not Charlie that got chosen, his poor girl would be so naïve to the ways this demon was doing things.

Then his eyes widen in realization, smacking his forehead, “Oh my god! Charlie! She saw me getting taken in front of her eyes! She must be out of her mind with worry!”

“You are now just realizing that? Goodness, I knew you can be slow but that was hours ago dear.”

Lucifer growled, “For someone who doesn’t even want me to stick around, you sure seem hung up on the endearments, my Mate.”

Alastor leaned over with those glowing red eyes again, “You should be grateful that I am going to let you have your freedom at all. I waited a very long time to get my hands on your power and I don’t intend to let it slip away now.”

“Well, I don’t see why you have to train me first, can’t you just zap it away?”

“No, it must be given away willingly, no one can forcibly take your magic away as much as I wish I could. And you are not strong enough to give away your power source, the process will be physically and emotionally draining, as you’ll just be a shell of your former self and I already know that you suffer from deep depression that came from your past experiences. So, you must also be mentally fit in order for this is to work.”

Lucifer deeply sighed, “Fine… I see your point.” While crossing his arms.

“I know it’s because you’re anxious to get back to Charlie but you must put your complete focus on this or you will be stuck here much longer than you want to.”

Lucifer looked on with pleading eyes, “Can I at least let her know that I’m okay?”

Alastor shook his head, “Alas no, we are deep within the realm of the fae, and no mortal can find this place, obviously you are the expectation due to your own power, but we are sealed away from the outside world, which means no contact.”

“But that makes no sense you were able to-“

“Because it was part of the curse, I was allowed to move between realms to find my mate.”

“But then how I am supposed to go back home afterwards?”

“You’ll be a mortal man then, back to where you belong.”

Lucifer was getting annoyed, “You just have all the fucking answers, don’t you?”

“Only because I have seen much more than you have.” Alastor commented with a sly grin.

Luci could only roll his eyes in return.
