“Hey,” Lloyd said, for lack of anything else to say. He shut the door behind him.

It was dark in Morro’s room. His floor was a mess. His dresser was a mess. Lloyd couldn’t say that he was surprised.

A bump under the blankets on Morro’s bed moved. Lloyd could just make out a head of back hair sticking out of it.

“Lloyd?” came Morro’s voice from the bump, groggily, “Why are you here?”

For a moment, all Lloyd did was stand still, unsure of what to do. Then his feet seemed to move on their own, taking him closer to the Morro Bump.

“Euphrasia’s worried,” he said.

The Morro Bump grunted, shifting. “I’m fine.”

“…Are you?” Lloyd asked quietly, feeling a concerned frown on his face.

There was no answer.

…

After a moment of debate, Lloyd laid down on his back beside the Morro Bump. He felt the Morro Bump freeze.

“…What are you doing?”

“What’s it look like?”

There was grumbling. And then, a pair of narrowed green eyes appeared.

Morro was technically glaring at him, but it wasn’t a very good one. It was ruined by the bags under his eyes and his bedhead.

“Go away. I said I was fine,” he grunted.

Lloyd stared at him with a bland expression. “Could’ve fooled me,” he said, deadpan.

Morro tried to glare again. “You’re so annoying.”

Lloyd was about to reply, but Morro apparently wasn’t done.

“Why are you even here? What do you care?!”

Lloyd blinked. “…Damn, Morro,” he breathed at his outburst.

But Morro didn’t seem satisfied by that, if the anger—no, it was pain—in his eyes were anything to go by. He was waiting for a proper answer.

Lloyd smacked his own forehead, beyond exasperated and frustrated. “It’s because you’re my best friend, stupid!”

Oh. When had that happened?

For a second, Morro’s green eyes widened. Then disappeared under the blanket, along with the rest of him.

Lloyd arched an eyebrow. “Hey, what are you doing?”

He got no answer. So he lifted the blanket and went under it too—and Morro let him.

“…Why am I your best friend?” he asked.

This Morro, quiet, small and curled up, was nothing like the old bully Morro he used to know. This Morro, who’d apologized to him, who was protective of his sister, and who wasn’t so angry anymore… was actually pretty cool.

He found himself reaching out and playing with the green streak in Morro’s ridiculous-looking bedhead.

“Because I like your hair,” he said.

Which he actually hadn’t meant to say.

“…What?” Morro asked.

But Lloyd could work off of that. He was good at covering up his awkwardness.

“And I like that you’re sarcastic and sassy,” he continued. “I like how you make tea for my uncle. I like that you’re such a good big brother to Euphrasia.”

Oops. It’d turned into an overflowing fountain.

“I like how you ruthlessly make fun of your friends, but if someone else did it, you’d clock them. I like—“

Morro covered his hand over his mouth. “Okay! I get it already,” he said, looking…

Embarrassed?

Lloyd took his hand off his mouth. “Do you?” he asked seriously.

Because he’d learned that Morro didn’t have a very good opinion of himself. And he could go on until that’d changed.

Morro’s head suddenly landed on top of his shoulder.

Lloyd blinked. Never, in a million years, could he have imagined this happening.

“Yeah,” he heard Morro mutter, “Thanks.”

…People were weird. In a good way. They changed.

Relationships changed too, sometimes… and the feelings that came with that were confusing.
