Summary
A Quirmian inspector arrives in Ankh-Morpork to chase after a con-man who skipped out of Quirm and whose trail has suddenly been picked up again.
Vimes doesn't like people infringing on his jurisdiction and questioning his abilities as a copper. And stop lecturing my men! That's my job!
Meanwhile there appears to be an arrival of an organized criminal network that isn't a guild. In fact it's stepping on a lot of guild's toes. His lordship isn't pleased and what are you going to do about it, commander?established Vimes/Vetinari.
Tech. takes place after that plague one but like Pratchett, it's not necessary to read them in order.

Summary
[Oh lover, do not be less than a moth
When would a lover avoid the flame?]
Vimes asks how she can be so calm about it.She says it’s different, from the outside. Like watching a person gasp at clean air, wrapping clean cool release around singed, burnt skin. You once said that the Patrician reminded you of cool mechanics and ice.
Vimes says, No do not remind me. I think I might have been wrong.
/I cannot promise anything only that words are used to create sentences but whether or not *sense* is achieved I leave to the reader's discretion. Also, as Borges says, “Being with you and not being with you is the only way I have to measure time.”\
