Summary
The Codfather’s loose shirt is gone now, and while Scott certainly hadn’t expected that level of muscle definition, that isn’t what he’s focused on. Jimmy’s torso is littered with scars. They’re all over, some large and others tiny, some an aged white and others a shiny red. He gapes at them, confused—what had happened? Is the sea really that dangerous? He knows Jimmy’s clumsy, does it justify this?
“What happened to you?” he blurts out, and Jimmy turns to him, face a picture of confusion, before his eyes follow Scott’s gaze. Comprehension dawns and his face closes off.
“You know how it is,” he says coolly, and Scott is pretty sure he does not, in fact, know how it is.

Summary
Scott isn’t coming. If his response history is any indication, Scott doesn’t check his messages frequently at all. He’s not coming. Nobody ever comes.
He’s alone.
Scott wouldn’t want to come, anyway. He’s not done much to prove he would never hurt Jimmy. Sure, he’s said he wouldn’t, but if Scott were here to see just how pathetic he is, he probably would break off their alliance then and there.
Jimmy licks his lips, looks up to where both Sausage and fWhip stand, and takes a deep breath. Then he lunges.

Summary
Scott can’t sleep.
He hasn’t slept in days, which isn’t necessarily abnormal for him, but this time he’s not so wrapped up in a project or area of study that he doesn’t notice the time passing. This time, he can’t sleep because every time he tries, he wakes up with nightmares. Nightmares about Jimmy.
He needs to guarantee somehow that Jimmy is safe. Which is why he decides, in the early hours of the morning as he stares out of his window, that he needs help in protecting Jimmy. As soon as it’s a reasonable hour, he sets off for the Ocean Kingdom.

Summary
Scott’s basically lost all of his friends in a matter of weeks. He won’t talk to Katherine and Gem, his closest friends, and by association Pearl, seeing as she seems to be taking their side. fWhip is so far out of the question Scott doesn’t even consider him as an option, and he’s . . . never really been friends with anyone else.
But now he has three new allies, one of which he’s inordinately attached to.
So he considers it for a moment when Jimmy begins inviting him to supplemental alliance meetings.

Summary
“He saw my scars, and he didn’t hurt me,” Jimmy murmurs. “He hated me, he used to hate me so much, but he saw that I needed help and he helped me. He wanted to help me. He hated me, but he wanted an alliance just so he could protect me.” He looks back up to Joel, who’s watching him with the most soulful look Jimmy’s ever seen on the man’s face. “Lizzie said he hasn’t slept in a week. For me. Have you ever had someone so worried for you that they don’t sleep for a week, trying to think of ways to protect you?”
Scott cares about him, more than anyone Jimmy’s ever met. Scott doesn’t even know him, and he cares about him.
That means something, doesn’t it? Whatever it means, it makes Jimmy’s stomach go all fluttery.

Summary
This. . . .
This is not his bedroom.
His bedroom is usually significantly lighter than this when he wakes up.
He hasn’t the faintest idea of where he is.
Then Scott shifts, lifts his pounding head from where his cheek is pressed up against stone, and realizes he’s on a cold floor in a damp-smelling room with no bed.
Now how on Aeor’s green earth has he ended up here?

Summary
Scott sits there. He doesn’t drift off, as much as he’d hoped he might, but he also can’t seem to focus at all on his research. Eventually, he stands, stretches, and pads over to his bookshelf. He skims the titles for a moment before finding one that he’s read several times over the past couple decades. Maybe a familiar story can ease him into sleep.
It can’t. Which is how, for the third night in a row, he’s awake to see the sunrise.

Summary
for the moment it feels like it did before Scott was hoarding these awful, taboo feelings for Jimmy—casual, friendly, light. He manages to laugh at a joke and tell one in return, dry teasing that turns into a fit of giggles when Jimmy goes red and starts sputtering a weak rebuttal. The jokes wind down into general discussion, gradually getting deeper (as conversations are wont to do) until both of them are yawning and barely keeping track of what they’re talking about.
It’s nice, and the air doesn’t lose its friendliness when they crawl into bed together and turn out the light.

Summary
This is almost a dream come true.
Jimmy is engaged to the love of his life. They share everything—quarters, meals, a bed. He lives with his fiance in a beautiful palace in the snowy mountains of Rivendell, overlooking a picturesque elven town. He spends every day with his fiance, working together and trading smiles that are literally only for each other.
Yet as sweet and wonderful and purely happy as that all sounds, Jimmy’s every moment is devastating.

Summary
“Ready to go to the End, Jimmy?” Sausage crows, stripping off Jimmy’s long gloves and using them to tie his wrists together. They’d torn his veil to use for the blindfold, so he isn’t exactly surprised that no one thought to bring rope. He flexes his wrists at first, hoping to relax them later and slip out of the binds, but Sausage pinches his hands until he stops.
He doesn’t answer Sausage, aiming for an enigmatic and proud presence. Even if his pride is currently in pieces on the floor, he’s not the angry fry he once acted like. He’s a hero to his people, a cod of great importance. He can at least pretend to be worthy of that.
“Gosh, whatever Scott did to him made him so boring,” drawls Joey, close enough behind Jimmy that he can feel his breath on his neck. “He’d usually still be fighting right now. I miss that.”

He’s got to say something, but all he can think about is Jimmy’s exhausted eyes, love confessions falling from bloodstained lips, impulsive kisses and a slippery grasp on his lover’s bleeding face.
He has to say something.
But Jimmy speaks first.

Summary
"I told you we could make it hurt," fWhip says, slightly out of breath. "That was just a taste. Want more of it?"
Scott can't help it; he shakes his head. His entire body stings inside and out, and he vaguely wonders what kind of enchantment the whip must have had to affect him in such a way.
"Of course you don't! So all you have to tell me is this: where is the god?"
And then Scott jolts awake in bed, a rooster crowing somewhere outside.

"But he has not passed," Scott insists. "If he had, our enemies would boast of the victory! I am certain that he—"

Fourteen days since that meeting.
Fourteen days since Jimmy's death was confirmed.
Nine days since Scott released an official mourning statement, mostly written by somebody else who had no real idea of what he and Jimmy shared.
And three days since Ilphas gently suggested working with Lizzie to plan a memorial service for Jimmy.

Summary
"You misunderstand me," Scott says, and his stomach flips because this is it, it's time to save the world and he doesn't know if he has the strength to do it, and he doesn't let his voice waver but he does let his breath catch— "I mean to kill Xornoth."
fWhip bursts out laughing. "Your funeral, Smajor."

Summary
They hadn’t expected the war so soon.
Jimmy had figured they at least had a couple of weeks. It wasn’t exactly public knowledge that Scott would be touring Rivendell and therefore not available to make battle decisions, but Lizzie and Joel had both sent extra troops to strengthen Rivendell in case of an attack from fWhip.
And then the attack came from behind.

Summary
That's that, then. He and Jimmy aren't going to talk about any of their real issues. Jimmy's so focused on this inconsequential plan of his that he won't even think about the fact that Xornoth may be controlling the world by now. Gem might be dead—literally any of them could be dead, Lizzie or Shubble or Joel all could have fallen—and Xornoth has control of half of the empires or all of them. And the only way to stop him didn't work.
Yet all Jimmy will even give thought to is his stupid little rebellion.
