Summary
“Oh!” Avid perked up immediately, staring with wide eyes. “You- you believe me? Of course, I should- there’s so much evidence, Owen-” He hesitated. “But I thought you didn’t believe in vampires?”
Owen shrugged. “Well, I still don’t know if I do, but I thought it was worth giving you a chance to explain yourself.” He began walking, and Avid, of course, followed- nobody had believed him so far, if he could at least save one person, have one person who he could trust to help him, then it would all be worth it.

Summary
When Apo signed up for this, she was signing up to go to an unpopulated area that almost nobody actually ever came to, despite her defenses that she was here because it was a tourist trap- more than anything, she'd wanted to be alone. The calmness, the quiet of the countryside- if they wanted to be around people, they would have signed up for an outpost in a city.
But they didn't, so they signed up for Oakhurst, because it seemed like their best option. They'd expected some difficulties, the ruins wouldn't have been a big problem unto themselves, but nonetheless somewhat of a difficulty, but the people?
They'd been trying to get away from people, not be stuck with this many of them.

Summary
Little sobs, muffled into the woollen blankets they’d gotten together, but not entirely muted, still loud enough for her to notice, to glance over at the bed and see Avid’s shoulders shaking, face buried in blanket and thus not visible, though she could imagine how wrecked he’d look if she could see it.
The chair creaked beneath her as she stood, and Avid visibly tensed, the footsteps that followed having his (red-rimmed, tear-filled) eyes peeking out to stare at her, and she wasn’t sure what his expression meant, but she could imagine it meant something, some hurt or fear or shame at being seen.
“I… noticed you were crying?”

Summary
The tunnel was long, dark, covered in skulls and unlit candles, and inevitably opened up into a single room.
She didn’t think to extinguish her torch, didn’t see any reason to. Maybe she should have.
Because the sight that greeted her as she brought her torch to eliminate the area below…

Or: Martyn goes missing again. Apo searches for him alone. It doesn't end well for anyone.

Summary
“Here, hold this for a minute.” Avid passed Drift a roll of clean, white bandages, and she took it in her uninjured hand, face screwing up with pain as he continued to gently wipe her torn-up palm with a rag. “Sorry, I know it hurts.”
“It’s fine.” Her voice was subdued. Near-death experiences did that to a person, and she’d been… really lucky, that she’d gotten away from him without being bitten, and drained or… turned. Into another vampire, because Avid had been… he’d been right, about everything. She hesitated, before, “Not going to say you told me so?” She tried for something light-hearted, but it fell flat, guilt and lingering fear marring the words.

Summary
“I'm going to show you something,” Avid's voice was barely more than a whisper, “And I need you to take me seriously.”
“Of course.” She always tried to, even if the whole vampires thing seemed ridiculous at first. It wouldn't be the mark of a good detective, or a good friend, if she didn't.
Careful fingers reached up to the bandages around his neck, bandages she hadn't seen him remove even once thus far, slowly unwrapping them.
They were stained with blood, now, was the first thing Drift noticed. Red seeping through them, oozing from…
A pair of twin holes marked Avid's neck.
(She wished the vampire thing still seemed ridiculous, wished that she couldn't believe that what she was looking at was real.)

Summary
“...If you treat it, do you think everyone else won’t hate me anymore?” Shubble’s gaze was downcast, hands curled into fists in her lap, hair shifting to hide her face.
Legundo sucked in a breath. “Unfortunately, the mind is not something I have studied extensively. I don’t… know, for sure, how anyone else would react to anything. Some of them view all vampires as a threat, regardless of your actions, and there’s a chance those people will always treat you poorly. But, I don’t believe that’s a reason not to try.”

Summary
“Apo?” Avid took a step towards her, even though every instinct in his body was telling him that there was a danger here- she was acting weird, the last time someone acted this weirdly, she tried to kill him, but Apo wasn’t her, and he was trying to be less paranoid, so he approached her, put a hand on her arm. “Hey, did something happen?”
There were tears in her eyes as she glanced up at him. “Please,” She choked out, “Please just go.”
“I’m not just going to leave you out here-”
Leaves crunched under someone’s boots, and Avid’s blood went cold. “I’m so sorry,” Apo whispered, tears welling up again, “I didn’t want to, I swear to you I-”

Summary
Sometimes, days like this where Owen woke up gasping, tears in the corners of his eyes, a half-remembered dream of loss lingering, he wished sleep wasn’t the only respite he had. Because, while some nights, he woke up feeling cold the moment he entered the land of the living, awoken from a dream where Louis was there, alive, the quietness of being with another different from the silence of isolation, far more comfortable. On those days, it hurt to be awake, but sleep’s comfort lingered.
On days like this, the only thing that lingered from sleep was heartache.
But, even when sleep wasn’t a comfort, it was more comfortable, closer to what he was used to, than being awake, than forcing his sluggish body through the motions.

“I’m not trying to interrogate him, I’m just worried- I’m worried about you, Abolish.” Avid gave him an expectant look.
“Look, Avid, I-” If anyone would understand, Avid would. “When I was in the woods earlier, Pyro and Scott were there.”
Avid tensed, glancing around as if they were about to jump out of the trees. “And you’re… what did they say?”
“They- it was less about what they said…”

“Oh, come on, you’ve had as many mental breakdowns as she has the last few days, haven’t you? Not particularly good support if you asked me," Owen scoffed.
“Well- no- nobody did! I’m trying my best.”
Owen shrugged easily. “Well, maybe your best isn’t good enough, hm?” He placed a hand on Avid’s head.
Avid immediately took a step back, making a face. “Don’t touch me.”
“What, don’t want the monster touching you?”

Summary
“Earlier,” Legundo broke the silence, and Abolish blinked back into himself, turning to look at the doctor, who was speaking with a forced casualty that set alarms off in his mind, “You said ‘it's just work.’”
“Did I?” It was all a bit of a blur, none of it had really felt significant enough to remember.
That didn't seem to calm the doctor at all; whatever he was getting at, he just seemed even more intense than before. “Yes, when Owen was asking us if we wanted to take credit for- I said I had enough sins already, and you said ‘it's just work.’”
Abolish shrugged. “I mean, it is. I know you have a lot of trauma from killing people, but it's still just… a job, in the end.”

1 Year Post-Oakhurst Treaty
–
“Hey, guys, can you- do you mind giving me a little space?” Drift’s throat was tight. “Sorry, I just-”
“So, I’ve officially been mourning you longer than I’ve known you- by a lot, actually, but I wasn’t… ready to come back here when it was exactly that time.” Drift sniffled, swiped away the first few tears that had beaded up in her eyes. “I’m… ready now. I have a lot to tell you, actually, ‘cause you’re my best friend, and… there’s a lot I think you’d want to know."
