Summary
Not enough for everyone to see you as pious and pure? Aldo thinks bitterly. Got to prove your worship on your knees to the one person, besides God, who can absolve you?
And isn’t that just the joke of it all? What salvation can Aldo Bellini give, Aldo who was priced like a cow for market – how his own words come back to haunt him! – and found only worth a few coins? Weak, stringy meat; feeble, sinning flesh. Tainted with spilt seed, more than enough to ruin the favour. Mea culpa, mea culpa. Sodomy with the Holy Father, what a purifying act; no doubt Thomas will get out of bed feeling blessed and squeaky-clean, slicked up with nothing but holy water. Not for him getting fucked the way Aldo does, quick and brutal.
Aldo thinks, for all his flaws, that he would have made a good Pope - but no amount of papal whites would have made him clean.
Or: in the days after, Vincent, Thomas and Aldo wrestle with ambition, loyalty, and the price of never getting what you want.

Summary
"We have held hands. Yesterday, after Compline, he kissed me. There has not been anything else.”
“Kissed you?”
Thomas studiously tips his head upward, avoiding all eye contact. “Yes. Not for very long.”
“Was it any good?”
“Aldo!”
“Worth a shot.” Aldo grins. “You could get some real money with his admirers, you know. There’s a lot of young women out there wanting to know how the prettiest Pope to ever grace the See might kiss.”
“Well.” With a certain primness Thomas folds his hands together. “I’m afraid they would have to go through me first.”
Oh, John, Aldo thinks. Beloved, beloved.
