Reaching up with one hand to rub at his shoulder, trying to ease some of the pain in the muscle there, he wandered back to his bedroom and kicked the door shut behind himself. He’d only just turned towards his bed to fall face-first onto it—fuck the lights, he’d leave them on, he did not care—when movement out of the corner of his eye caught his attention and his heart dislodged itself into his throat.
He ended up doing a weird half-turn pirouette kind of move, lost his balance, tripped over a pair of pants and landed face-first onto his bed.

If you asked Gideon, foil was a crappy weapon and nothing could replace an épée. But Harrowhark is injured and somebody has to fill in for her at the tournament. Tern is a formidable opponent, but Harrowhark is adamant that Gideon has to win this bout.
Gideon stuck her tongue out at her, but Harrow couldn’t see that through the mask mesh and the painted skull.
“Parry, then riposte!” Ortus seemed to think this was helpful advice.
It would have been better if Ortus had given advice to Harrow to fix her lunge, before she sprained her ankle, and avoided Gideon having to take her place on the squad all together. Harrow loved this shit. Right of way, all of foils little rules and tricks and keeping track of each action. While Harrow had been studying for the referee qualifying exam, Gideon had been studying how to make a hard hit in a proper weapon. Epéeists had the good sense to understand that right of way was a stupid concept in the middle of an actual fight. You’re either hit, or you’re not, parries be damned.

“Palamedes wanted to ask you to check on Gideon,” Camilla had said, making sure Harrowhark held her gaze. Her oak brown eyes betrayed no emotion. “Octakiseron has been trying to talk to her.”
“I am not Nav’s keeper,” Harrowhark had frowned back, almost instinctively, and as soon as she had said it, she had regretted it. “She can talk to whomever she likes.”
Camilla’s eyebrows had shifted again, and Harrow had the distinct impression that she had been evaluated and found wanting. She had been surprised to find there was a part of herself upset by it, but it was a rather small part: being Harrowhark Nonagesimus came with a not insignificant amount of baggage, and Camilla Hect’s disapproval would certainly not be the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Camilla had lowered her arm without adding further comments. Harrowhark had gone on her less-than-merry way.
