The phone call comes in the middle of the night, when Abby is asleep in her bed and Mike is already lying awake in his. He stares at the ceiling as the electronic peals of his ringtone play, hoping the caller will give up, not wanting to speak right now. He hates answering the phone.
After a while, it goes silent, and Mike closes his eyes again. He can’t sleep. The scraps of the Nebraska poster on the ceiling over his bed flutter and rasp against the ceiling in the wind generated by his small bedside fan.
He shuts his eyes again and attempts to dismiss the midnight caller. Just the insurance company, he thinks, or a scammer, or a wrong number.
The phone rings again.
