While on their first field assignment since Penacony, Aventurine and Ratio are surprised to encounter a vengeful Avgin mercenary. As soon as she speaks, however, a name and face from the past spring instantly to Aventurine's mind — that of his supposedly dead sister, Kadriya. In what proves to be the biggest gamble of his life, he strikes a deal with her to convince her to come back to Pier Point with him, even though he can't be sure of her actual identity. What follows is a tense and chaotic ride that none of them expected, filled with mystery, secrets, distrust… and regret.

Veritas shrugs, loosening his grip on the luggage. “That would be me.”
Aventurine arches an eyebrow and reads it again, for the fourth time:
As a Senior member of the Department of Strategic Investment and one of the Ten Stonehearts, we are pleased to inform you, Aventurine of Stratagems, that you have been assigned a Doctor of Chaos until you have recovered from the traumatic events in Penacony. Doctor Veritas Ratio will attend to your mental and physical well-being for as long as deemed necessary. Until then, your leave shall remain paid, for no more than three hundred and sixty-five days, at which point medical assistance may be renewed.

Dawn-colored eyes flashed through Aventurine's mind. “Let's suppose I really have this disease. What’s the cure?”
Reyes adjusted his glasses, taking his sweet time putting away his medical equipment. Aventurine bit the inside of his cheek to keep from grabbing the man’s shoulders and shaking him so he’d stop stalling.
“There is no known cure other than for the afflicted person’s feelings to cease, or for their affections to be returned,” he finally said.
Aventurine threw his head back and laughed.
Shortly after returning from Penacony and resuming his no strings attached relationship with Ratio, Aventurine starts coughing up flowers.
