Flashes of memories swept through her mind. Her parents bringing Dawn home from the hospital after being born. When Dawn started writing diaries. When Buffy had burned down the gym at Henry High, and she and her mom had to move to Sunnydale. Dawn… where was Dawn? She was there, but she wasn’t. Buffy pictured the rooms in her house. The photos decorating it. Pictures of her and Joyce. A room filled with supplies for the gallery. But she knew, the photos were her and Joyce and Dawn. The room was Dawn’s, with stuffed animals and nail polish and posters and bright pink sheets. “Dawn…?” she whispered in confusion.
“She’s the Key,” he admitted.
“My memories. My mom’s…”

A Buffy the Vampire Slayer story set between episodes 21 and 22 of season 5. Meant to be canon compliant and the first in a series of three novels chronologically. Based in part on a story I believe was posted on asstr.org, but I can no longer find the original. It too is called "The Break of Dawn" and so, if anyone know of a web archive of it or the original link, please let me know. Anyway, the intent is to rewrite three formerly disconnected stories and try to keep them plausably within canon.

Spike tries to take Buffy out in their ‘is this a date’ episode but instead of lashing out, she just goes to the nearest crate and has a breakdown cuz this is the WORST year of her life. Spike vows to make it better for her as best he can and for once, he kinda delivers. Even when the rest of Sunnydale goes off and makes things way, way worse for them all.
Takes place during the second half of season 5, with dates to make following along w the actual cannon a little easier. Buffy breaks down because if anyone were in her shoes w the year she’s had, they probably would too. Slayer or not, that shit SUCKED. Joyce is a badass and doesn’t die, a giant cockroach demon tries to abduct the Slayer, Spike plays nurse (not in a sexy way), and there’s a road trip from a hell beast. What more could a story have? A happy ending? Yeah, sure, but who wants to go demon bowling? I know Buffy does.

And the jacket. The jacket smells like her. Buffy remembered how last night, before she went to bed she had sniffed the jacket, inhaling it deeply. It smelled like leather but something else too. Maybe the perfume Faith wore? Or her shampoo? Buffy frowned. She was pretty sure rivals didn’t sniff the war trophies they took after they won.
