Summary
Mac was just reaching into his inner jacket pocket for his SAK when a hand clamped over his mouth, forcing his head back, and there was a sharp sting against the side of his neck. It was done quickly. Smooth, professional, and almost casual in nature: hand over mouth, needle into neck. A well-rehearsed one-two.
Mac reacted immediately, trying to pry the hand off his mouth with one hand, and driving his other elbow back.
His elbow lacked the room to be effective, and the hand that had plunged the needle into his neck switched to a restraining hold around his chest. The hand over his mouth was rigid, unshifting as Mac scrabbled for a grip to yank it away.
Then the drug took effect.///

Summary
Jack had told Mac once, both of their backs against the sun warmed headstone facing Dalton Sr.’s grave, that losing his father had knocked the world off its axis. He’d then hastily clarified that he knew it hadn’t actually, that it had just felt like it had. He’d been trying to preempt some expected response from Mac, a ‘well that’s physically impossible Jack’ or ‘that would require an impact that would cause immediate mass extinction across the globe, thus making it feel like absolutely nothing’. With Jack’s shoulder against his, and a Dalton gravestone facing them, Mac let himself be uncomfortable, posing a tentative, open-ended, question instead.
Jack had a familiar, easy smile when he’d replied.
It’s being knocked off balance and never quite regaining it.Or, Jack dies and Mac's world spins right out from under his feet.

Summary
“Mac?” Jack called out, a little louder.
Then there was a thud, and Jack dropped what he was holding to dash up the stairs. He was a little out of breath when he reached Mac’s room and swung the door open, his other hand darting down to his holster.
Mac was lying on his stomach on the floor, facing the door. He’d propped himself up on his elbows, and his brows were knitted together as if he was still piecing together how he’d ended up there.
“You scared the shit outta me.” Jack huffed, letting all of his energy deflate from him all at once. He removed his hand from the butt of his gun. “What’re you doing down there, hoss?”
Mac frowned, then groaned quietly — out of what sounded more like annoyance than discomfort — and pushed himself up onto his knees. “What’re you doing here?”
“What am I always doing?” Jack teased. He took a few steps forwards and crouched in front of Mac to press the back of his hand against Mac’s forehead. “Looking after your trouble-magnet ass.”//

Summary
Jack’s gun was angled low but at the ready, aimed at the ground midway between Mac and himself. A short flick, moving the gun less than an inch, and the incremental movement of pulling down on the trigger. The time it’d take the bullet to travel mere feet? Jack didn’t know the exact numbers, but it was going to be faster than the sniper’s bullet from the distant rooftop.
In real time it all played out so much faster, so much colder.
“Shit, I think this is a trap, hoss.” Jack hissed out, unholstering his gun and aiming it down to the ground. “Eyes out.”
Mac grimaced in agreement and twisted to scan the street, half-turning his back to Jack. Then Jack’s gun had jerked up slightly, he’d fired, and Mac hit the ground as the bullet punched into the back of his lower leg. He’d let out a little sound as it happened, a gasped hiss. Half pain, half shock. Pain because he got shot, shock because it had come from where Jack was covering him.//

Summary
So it was math, which Mac’s oxygen deprived brain could only hazard at with scattered estimates and vague physics. His assailant and him were flying left, and the RV’s left window was careening right. Two forces colliding. Mac and his assailant were moving at maybe five miles per hour with a collective weight likely over three hundred pounds. The RV was mid-turn, which meant not all of its speed was flying directly sideways, but merely some fraction of it that Mac was struggling to calculate. The RV probably weighed over ten thousand pounds. Their legs hitting the edge of the table would bleed out some energy. Exactly how much force was required to shatter a plane of glass?
The answer to that last question turned out to be irrelevant. However much energy it would’ve taken was apparently more than it took for the rubber gasket holding the window into the RV wall to give out. Instead of breaking, the whole plane of glass detached completely.
Glass pane, assailant, and Mac, collectively flew out of the RV.//

Summary
Mac had just been so calm beforehand, like he knew exactly what he had to do and how to do it. He’d been his usual at-work self, focused, intent, and distant. His flannel sleeves had been bunched up above his elbows, one higher than the other, and one he had to keep absently shoving up as it drifted downwards. They’d had to cut it off in the ambulance, at least the parts of it that would come off.
“Jack.” Mac hadn’t even looked at Jack when he’d started speaking, not needing to confirm the fact that he was heard, eyes fixed over Jack’s shoulder. “I need you to get one of those metal panels off the wall.”
“On it.” Jack had lurched to his feet. Unquestioning. He’d learned not to question Mac. Fuck.
Jack pulled his head out of the sink, lifting his hand off the drain to let the full basin of water drain away. Cold water dripped down the back of his neck, trickled from his eyelids into his eyes, stinging and blurring his vision, dampening his shirt. He breathed hard. A man washing his hands with one of the other bathroom sinks gave Jack a strange look but didn’t comment.
Mac had just been so sure.
