Summary
The night of the Kyuubi's attack, the Kyuubi "appeared out of nowhere." What happens when a large object suddenly becomes present? The air is shoved aside in a massive pressure wave. Massive pressure wave + infant eardrums = deaf baby. Deaf baby + miscommunication, panic, and exhaustion = no one actually knows who has the baby. Misplaced baby + growing hatred = toddler abandonment. Toddler abandonment + continuing hatred + deafness = confused child who had to make up the rules as they went.
The correlation between the actual rules and the invented rules is loose at best, but when the invented rules end up making more sense than the actual rules and the inventor is charismatic enough to get anyone to listen to him, what chaos ensues?
And once a terrible, immaterial, unfightable foe from Somewhere Else begins to claw out a foothold into their world, how can a strange child and their friends protect themselves and their precious people?
Listening to The Magnus Archives is not necessary to understand this work, but it's a really good horror podcast so I reccomend listening to it for that, if nothing else!

"It's… unimaginative. They can describe a scene, certainly, but the writing feels devoid of any feeling other than disproportionate wide-eyed wonder. In fact, their only inspiration seems to be rain, the streets of London, and rain on the streets of London. Not to mention that their writing style is so enamoured with Keats that it lacks any distinction of its own. What do you think of it?"
Jon does not seem to have given the man the intellectual stimulation that he's looking for.
"Oh…" His eyebrows are nearing his hairline. His front teeth overlap, Jon notes when he offers a nervous smile. That's quite cute. "Um, I- I wrote it?"

A knife sat in the middle of their upper torso, crimson liquid slowly rolling down from the wound. Their eyes- and fuck there were a lot- blinked simultaneously before fading into their face. Tim squinted, observing their facial features as recognition slapped him in the face. While there were many differences, such as the piercing green eyes or the many circular holes that dotted their face, he couldn’t help but see the similarities.
They looked exactly like Jon.

Jon walked into his first day at the Magnus Institute feeling a bit nervous. He was going to be a researcher.
“JON!!!!!!” He turned to see an unfamiliar man staring at him like he was some long-lost loved one. “I transferred to research to be here when you arrived - how have you been? I didn’t know where you lived so I thought I’d just wait here - and when did you start using a cane -”
“Um, I’m sorry… I’m not sure I know you?”
Martin felt his heart shatter. Of course. It was too much to hope that this Jon would be the same Jon. This was just… the old Jon. Who didn’t love him, didn’t even know him. He sniffled sadly.
“Are you okay?” Jon was concerned. He might not know this man but for some reason seeing him in pain hurt. Really hurt. He felt there was something explanatory just at the edge of his thoughts but it was like trying to remember a dream after waking up.

Tim’s head quirks to one side. He visibly perks up.

Small streams of light pathetically peered through the gaps in the blinds, just enough to wake the man resting behind the sparse cover they provided from the outside world. Late night after late night coaxed daylight to come always too early for his liking. He slowly rose from the small, messy bed he had come to resent over time. Every bed tells a story, and this one was bleak and depressing. The mattress was riddled with blues and blacks from his near infinite supply of pens, and both coffee and blood had left behind small specks of brown. The worst thing about blood was that when it dried, it became this awful, muted wooden stain in whichever surface it had come to rest on. He hated his bed because it told the delicate, tragic story of the man who slept in it that had been woven together with blood and tears and nightmares and anger and sorrow and hatred and fear.
