Summary
Deirta Thelyss may not have been of den Kryn, but she was about as close as one could get without climbing back into the Luxon and trying again. She had been consecuted eight hundred years ago, and was nearly as old as Leylas herself, or so they say. The Light had shone upon her and granted her, finally, two children - her golden boy, Verin, and her silver moon child, Essek. Both she loved, in her own way - though, Essek mused as he traced the gilded lettering of his dinner invitation, it was a peculiar sort of love. He couldn’t help feeling there was something missing in the flinch behind his mother’s eyes when she looked at him, how she rose to the occasion in public but did everything she could to pretend he was a ghost behind closed doors.
The invitation was gilded in gold. I understand the hint, Mother.

Summary
Deirta manufactures an image of domestic peace—her youngest child feigning sleep in her arms as she puts a book away—before the mob bursts into the library. Its circuitous, winding bookshelves buy her enough time for one last spell to modify Essek’s memory, sealing away his recollections of den Thelyss, of Verin and Taldia, of herself.
Verin is spirited out of Rosohna, leaving his younger brother behind, right before the Bright Queen orders den Thelyss to be razed to the ground. When Verin returns, he discovers that there is no one in Rosohna who bears the name Essek den Thelyss. There is only Essek den Kryn.

Summary
Caleb is drifting off to sleep when he sees the look on Essek's face. A mask of forced indifference worn in court. Glaring at the shirt in his hands like it had personally offended him.
Caleb reached out, even knowing his arm would not reach. "What is it?" he asked, voice groggy.
The smile Essek gave him didn’t reach his eyes. He sat on the side of the bed to grab the offered hand. His response is quiet. Barely above a whisper. "It is nothing. A selfish thought".
