Summary
It shouldn’t have been a surprise, then, that he found himself descending those concrete steps, acting for all the world as if he wasn’t falling into that blackness just as so many other men willingly did before him. Or, maybe, found was too generous a word. Perhaps stumble was a better term, because Brian certainly did not pursue the joint actively – or at least, he told himself that he didn’t. Instead, it seemed to find him whenever the malaise became too much. No one went looking for this sort of place, except perhaps subconsciously when the lying got to be too much. It wasn’t meant to be found, anyway, hidden deep underground in the shadows too dark for normal people to want to hide in.
It was a pit. If you weren’t careful, it would swallow you whole.
