This story takes place three years after Light and B kidnapped L, since they decided to reform him rather than killing him, and -- things are better now. L (renamed Dawn) has his own room, his pictures that he drew, which hang above his bed, his window where he can look out at the night sky and the stars, his jewelry, his clothes, his sweets (for dessert, after a healthy meal) -- and, most of all, he has his two saviors, B and Kira-sama.
Sometimes, the bad thoughts creep in, but he knows what to do then. He knows that every single thought that appears in his cunning, cruel, devious mind is sinful, tainted, and rotten. But he also knows that B and Kira-sama are willing to forgive him for that, and in return, he is to trust them with everything he has. L is intrinsically evil, but he refuses to be L. He is Dawn. Dawn is intrinsically evil as well, but with a crucial difference. Dawn has hope that things can change, that he can change, the same hope that Kira-sama and B have for him. He will be everlastingly grateful for the hope they have for him, and will do everything he can to make it so they never regret it -- never regret saving him from death.
