Now: When Eliot wakes up, everything is wrong. Quentin is missing, leaving only ominous letters behind, and no one seems to care. He needs to understand what happened while he was gone. Why something in his body is telling him things were worse than they seemed. He has to find Q, at least make sure he's still alive.
Then: The monster is fascinated by Quentin. And Quentin? Well, he loves Eliot and he needs to keep his body alive for him to return... and he is a weak, selfish man. Really, he shouldn't have expected better from himself.

The sort of thing he therapist would say. His abusive father has just died, and Eliot can't help but feel it's necessary for him to attend, no matter how nauseating the idea is. His boyfriend, Quentin Coldwater--an open man with the patience to endure Eliot's drama and traumas--is bound to learn some thing new about his boyfriend. Or ten. And Eliot is mortified at the prospect of losing the love of those close to him.
Woven in the fibers of every person, are the core experiences that effect the way they interact with the world. Drugs, booze, abuse, shitty blond Texans with control issues, and glamorous BFFs that never give up on you included. Sometimes we blame the symptoms instead of the cause, when all they do is keep us alive at our lowest. How is Eliot expected to hold on to his sanity--and his sobriety--when he is immersed in the life that he had packed away and abandoned over a decade ago? -

Quentin stares at him, eyes wide. In times like these Quentin is almost stupid enough to believe that Eliot loves him back. ”You don’t mean that,” he scoffs.
“I do,” Eliot’s expression softens. “Getting magic back isn’t worth your life, Q. Not to me. Not to the others.”
“That’s a nice sentiment, El.” He says halfheartedly.
His gaze feels like it’s burning a hole into Quentin. “And if the roles were switched? If it were Alice or me deciding to stay at Blackspire? Would you just accept it?”
“That’s different, Eliot.”
“Is it? How? Explain it to me.”
He paused before responding this time. “It...It just is.”
The knowing look he got in return was enough to make him want to crumble.

I had not intended to write a sequel to 'The Grass is Dead, the Gold is Brown', but like... Here I am with Quentin's POV. I don't even have an exact imagined point where this falls, but like I'm already imagining a slight alternate universe in which Quentin and Alice are allowed to just be friends instead of having intensely uncomfortable makeout sessions, so who even knows.
(I cannot be the only person who hates that their whole relationship is the two of them being REALLY BAD at being together while other people loudly talk about their sexual chemistry at them, like they could have had a good relationship as people if TV writers weren't weird about sex)

Quentin won’t look at him now; he’s staring into the fireplace with his hands clenched around the cuffs of his sweatshirt. He shakes his head a little, letting a curtain of dark hair obscure his face from Eliot’s view. Definitely hiding something. Eliot’s heart beats a little faster as he leans forward to try to get a better look.
“Quentin, what is going on? What aren’t you telling me?”
