Nobody talked to him, well except mom. His dad was as distant as ever, always coddling his sister, Natalie, and taking his mom everywhere. Mom said it was some place called a ‘psychologist’ or something like that.
Gabe knew he wasn’t real. He knew Natalie didn't know he was right there, he knew his dad wouldn’t be able to acknowledge him, and for a child he was damn smart at realising that he was just a delusion, created by his mom.

You've always had strange eyes. It's something that people often comment on or say to your face, "Your eyes are off." Yeah. You know.
And it's not the color or the shape or anything else specific that they can name, but you know what it is. It's not something they can see. It's what you can see, but they can't.
You can see ghosts.
Simple as that.
You see them as clear as the people walking in the streets and hear them as crisp as the songs you hear on the radio.
Ghosts, to you, are many things. They can be people who used to be alive, sure, but not always. Sometimes it's a tree that used to be in the park or someone's front yard. Sometimes a ghost is the sound of an extinct bird. A ghost can be a lot of things. A memory, a daydream, a secret. Grief, anger, guilt, resentment, joy, youth, nostalgia, love... But in your experience? Most times they're just what we want to see. Most times, a ghost is a wish. A wish that was never granted, and usually never will.
You see them as distinctively as the living.
Perhaps that's why you got into this situation in the first place.

If there is one thing Natalie Goodman does well, it’s bolt. She’s got a surprising knack for it, whether it’s nature or nurture is completely up for debate. Natalie doesn’t know which one would be worse.
It’s all about the subtleties. She picks up on the implicit suggestions Henry makes, the signs of danger that only her sophisticated wiring can find. The things he says that he doesn’t even realise are important. She never blames him for any of it. It’s just the way he is.
When she pulls away, it’s just as subtle. A half-step, a missed call. A homework assignment she needs to crack, a sonata she just needs to master. An emergency at home, because Henry can never say no to those. Appointments, extra-curriculars, interviews. Woman problems, when the case calls for it. Most of the time she tells him she’s sick and she isn’t technically lying. There is indeed something wrong with her.
