Summary
"First," said Gale. "Do not kill any thinking creatures in Waterdeep unless you must to protect yourself or you have my express permission."
As Gale spoke, he could feel the weight of his words sinking into the person sitting across from him. It was like casting a spell, but took no effort. Astarion had been staring hollowly into his goblet of blood, but at this he made a faintly interested noise. As if the rule were novel and he was considering the shape of it.
"Second, you will obey me in all things," said Gale. There didn't feel like there was any honest way of softening that. Astarion didn't make any sound at all.
"Third, do not leave the tower without permission." Astarion made another speculative noise, considering this one too. But then his shoulders hunched and his eyes skittered down, as if he didn't want to look at what was about to happen.
"Fourth," Gale said, and paused. He started with some context: "There is a tressym upstairs."
Astarion's head twitched. He looked up at Gale, blinking, startled. He had the air of someone who had been bracing for a blow and instead had just been handed a balloon animal.
"A what?" he asked.

Summary
It was supposed to be easy. All Astarion had to do to pass his Astronomy course was get his project partner under his thumb. Flirt with the man, pretend to care, even feign a friendship— anything for a good grade.
Then, he’d discard him— block his number and pretend he never knew him— just like he’s done so many times before. Getting this wildly intelligent man at his every beck and call would have many, many benefits, and Astarion was nothing but a visionary.
But nothing could ever be so textbook, could it?
Gale, however— the project partner in question, and the smartest man in the Astronomy Department— had a secret. He was doing his Bachelor’s Degree all over again, in his 30’s, just because of one mistake he made in his past; a mistake he doesn’t even remember making.
•••••
One knows he’s being abused by his partner; the other doesn’t. However, both could agree on two things: the first being that getting out was the hardest thing they’ve ever done, and the second being that they couldn’t have done it without each other.

Summary
Gale tried again. “I—yes,” he said, finally. “This might be my last night alive. You’re right.”
“I’m not right,” sniffed Astarion. “I don't approve of the idea. I’m onto you. There’s a difference.”
The night before they reach Moonrise Towers, Gale's simulacrum fetches Astarion from his tent. He doesn't come quietly.

“You were never that good of a liar, Mr. Dekarios,” she continues, “Not to me, at least. Your mother might fall for your boyish charms and sweet smile, but you’ll have to try harder than that if you want to convince me that there’s nothing I should be concerned about.”
Gale exhales through his nose, dragon’s breath, and thinks of impossibly deep kisses, recalls recurring dreams of unanswered pleas for mercy.
“There isn’t.”
Lonely, painful days.
“Isn’t there?”
The soothing balm that arrives each night. His own blood staining the sheets. Bliss.
“No.”

Summary
"I'm exhausted," Gale admits, rubbing absentmindedly at his chest, "but I can't sleep."
"That makes two of us, then," Astarion sighs, studying Gale from beneath his lashes. "Is it the orb?"
Gale finds himself nodding tentatively, "It aches."
"I suppose a little divine pain relief is too much to ask for," Astarion scoffs.
-OR-
Gale is exhausted, but he isn't alone.

Then he meets a wandering wizard in need of a traveling companion.

Summary
Knowing what his reaction would be before she spoke, all Alaw’Ryfel could bring herself to spit was, “Fuck Mystra.”
He gave an expected long-suffering sigh and carefully closed his book, “Please refrain from hurling obscenities at deities, it generally doesn’t end well for us mortals.”
She squeezed the edges of the tome against her chest tighter and felt her temper flare, “If all the gods are good for is smiting us when we do something they don’t approve of and giving us impossible tasks they could easily solve themselves they’re no better than tyrants.”
A small smile graced the corner of his mouth, and she felt him trying to lighten her mood, “A confusing view on the gods for someone with a cleric for a sister.”

Summary
The Shadowcurse creeps into undead flesh like frost. Gale applies the most logical solution to save Astarion: full-body contact. For science. Obviously.
Gale can cuddle Astarion warm through their first night in the Shadow-Cursed Lands—but if he thinks he gets to save someone else while planning to sacrifice himself, Astarion has a few objections to make.
Canon compliance: Takes place in Act 2 just after arriving in the Shadow-cursed Lands and is mostly compliant except for the way the shadowcurse works (see notes)

Summary
Gale was a beta. He only needed Astarion’s pillows and blankets because his body ached from sleeping on the ground. Surely it wouldn’t kill the vampire to part with a few comforts?
Alternatively: Gale has an uncharacteristic bout of thievery and Astarion, like a hypocrite, confronts him for it.

Summary
Gale turned out to be a lovely surprise.
Obedient, easy to please, very ingenious when it comes to his mouth. And perhaps the best part was that he was willing to let Astarion utilize that mouth together with any and all of his powers, be it in battle or otherwise, needing only the smallest of gestures on Astarion’s part.
Perhaps Gale knew he would be generously rewarded for his efforts. And perhaps he truly wished for Astarion’s well-being. He wouldn’t complain either way.
He could spend hours with his new toy, playing and tying and tugging at all the right spots to make Gale cry out in pleasure.
But not once did he kiss him.

Summary
“Or…” Astarion continues, his voice heavy with promise, “did you want me to take you properly?”
Gale's breathing stutters. “Yes, that,” he answers quickly, like he's worried he'll lose the ability to speak. “Please?” he begs, like Astarion would ever deny him.
Astarion slides his hand to Gale's waist, dipping under the wizard's ridiculous velvet shirt. “And when I take you,” —Astarion says Gale's euphemism in the filthiest tone he can muster— “will we be fucking or making love?”
Gale's eyes are wide and desperate as he looks at Astarion, it's almost as if he's been struck.

Astarion doesn't know what he wants, not really, but he doesn't want Gale to die.

Summary
Gale Dekarios had spent decades writing letters to prepare Astarion for the inevitable day they would part, imagining his words being read centuries later, echoing through the empty halls of their home. But fate had other plans. Astarion, the immortal vampire who had endured centuries of torment, was gone, leaving Gale—the mortal wizard—to face the silence of their shared eternity. Now, with only his carefully crafted letters as a guide, Gale must navigate his grief and find solace in the words he once wrote for Astarion.
---
"My dearest starlight sovereign,
If you’re reading this first letter, I’ve likely committed the gravest of social faux pas by dying without properly scheduling it. I can already hear your indignant protest: “Really, darling? And after all those lectures about proper planning and preparation.” I know how you despise impromptu departures, my love—particularly the permanent kind."

Summary
“So you should be able to come now that the orb is stabilized, right?”
After more than a month of travelling together, he has yet to have a conversation with Astarion which did not induce whiplash. It just typically happens in the middle of a conversation. It doesn’t set him at ease to have it happen up front. Heat crawls up his face and he sits up because he’s not sure lying down while having whatever in the Hells this conversation is going to be is advisable.
“You know, most people announce themselves before entering someone else’s tent, and perhaps even start conversations with a greeting,” Gale scolds, snapping his book shut.
Astarion plasters on one of his sharpest artificial smiles and says, with that pleasant, hollow affect he knows Gale can’t stand, “Hello, Gale. What do you think about this weather we’re having? Shadows with a chance of raving cultists for the foreseeable future! Now will you answer my question?”

Gale's lips quirk up into a small smile, like he's trying not to laugh. “How terrible,” he teases. “Our resident hero has taken it upon himself to protect his friends without compensation. Such a shocking turn of events.”
Astarion pouts a little, just for show. Gale enjoys the back and forth as much as he does. “Well, he could at least pretend to be moved by my beauty.”
