“You good?” he asks, taking a step in Buck’s direction. Buck turns away quickly, his shirt halfway over his head.
“Yeah,” he says, pulling his shirt the rest of the way off and holding it up to his chest. “Yep. I’m fine.”

Every muscle in Eddie locked up the second he was out of the truck and rounding the corner they were being led towards, gaze drawn immediately to the ladder truck standing in the middle of the recreated street, its ladder fully extended, and– and there was Buck again, hanging from the end by nothing but the harness Eddie had pulled tight on him before telling him “Alright, cowboy, go get em,” words that had almost been the last thing he ever said to him. There was Buck, limp and strung up like a marionette puppet. There was Buck, water pooling on his turnout coat and falling to the ground below in splashes like some morbid, gruesome version of the cones at waterparks. There was Buck and he wasn’t breathing, his heart wasn’t beating, he was gone. Again. Rain seemed to sting his skin, cutting his face, his hands, his arms, his neck like small needles falling from the sky, and there was a scream, a desperate call of a name pushing at the back of his tongue, begging to escape, and–

Buck had survived a 7.1 earthquake, a nearly 70,000 pound ladder truck landing on him, a tsunami, and hundreds of other situations with odds far, far worse than this.
So why could Eddie not stop shaking? Why could his lungs not draw in a full breath? Why could he not push the image of his limp body hanging from the ladder by nothing but his harness out of his mind? Why did his knees give out and his legs crumple under him the second Buck was through the doors they couldn’t follow through? Why did it feel like his world was imploding?
Buck survived. That’s what he did. The statistics should be on his side, not just because 90%, but because he was Buck, and that meant everything. Nothing could take Buck away, nothing could bring an end to how much life he had. There was no stopping the constant energy running through him, even when he was sound asleep.

AKA Buck being struck by lightning would not give me peace and I just had to write something about it after falling into a bit of a spiral about survival chances when being struck by lightning. Also, I feel like Maddie and Eddie are an underrated friendship that apparently took hold as well. -

Blood rushes in Eddie’s ears, his hands involuntarily balling into fists. He inhales sharply through his nose, trying to remember the techniques he’s learned in therapy to control the anger he always has simmering beneath the surface, now suddenly threatening to boil over.
“That’s great, Buck,” he says stiffly after counting to ten in his head. “I’m glad you feel seen.”

Even before all this, she’d gotten the sense that Fox Mulder was a romantic. Their developing relationship, even at its most private moments in their apartments, only confirmed that. He wanted to kiss for what felt like hours after sex, even after their bodies had cooled down. Without mention, all of her favorite after-sex foods had appeared in his otherwise empty cabinets. When they did finally go back to bed and fall asleep, he would curl around her like she was a teddy bear, and stay like that all night.

Buck beelines for his refrigerator as soon as he steps inside his loft, Eddie following close behind him. Wordlessly, he pulls two beers out of his fridge and passes one over.
Eddie accepts it, tipping the can in thanks. “You’re quiet,” he remarks as he cracks the beer open, then takes a sip. “Gotta say, I thought you’d be a little more eager to celebrate your winnings.”
Buck stares down at the countertop, his own unopened beer clutched in a white-knuckled grip. There’s been a buzzing in the back of his mind ever since the beginning of the poker game. He just can’t get that one moment out of his head —
So, three minutes, huh?
Uh, what’s that?
That’s how long you were dead.
“You counted,” he blurts out without looking up.

Buck is grateful that so many people want to see him and help him after he's released from the hospital. Because he survived being struck by lightning. Because that's just how weird his life has become. But he also needs some time to himself, to unwind and accept what he went through and what his coma dream was. Feeling better after making it to his bathroom for a bath, he finds himself, once again, surrounded by his 118 family and his parents. Still confused about why they're there, Buck is unable to stop himself from asking his pressing questions.

Bobby thought Buck had changed his emergency information since he knew he was working on a relationship with his parents. Or at least, he thought he was working on it. But when he and Eddie are the ones who are asked to make the decisions for Buck while in his coma, he can't help but feel pleased that Buck still trusted him that much.
