It's been one year since the successful road trip for bonding, and somehow all the progress Peter made with Erik seems like it's gone down the drain. With Erik more distant than ever, Peter desperately wants to fix their relationship, and the only logical answer is another family trip.
This time, Peter, Erik, Charles, Raven, Kurt, and Hank all end up going camping, leaving behind society to brave nature as they try to withstand the forced closeness from being practically the only people for miles around. Peter wants to figure out why Erik has been avoiding him. Raven wants to figure out how to be a better mother to Kurt. Hank just wants to spot birds. Needless to say, it's going to be a rough ten days for all of them.
Featuring campfire stories, ridiculous banter, Bigfoot, the return of the crop tops, and somehow through it all, Peter and Erik learning what it means to be a family (now that they know they are) :P

So, naturally, this was the time that Charles approached him, calm and collected, the way he always seemed to be. Somehow he made it look as though he belonged in the place Erik had been hiding out.

It had seemed like a good idea at the time. After all, Erik knew well that there was someone who had caught both of their eyes and he was sure they had done the same to said other person.
But, what he didn’t expect from polyamory was the way he was going to feel to see Charles with someone else.
The emotion wasn’t exactly jealousy—though he had expected it to have been—that didn’t feel how he felt. Perhaps inadequacy would be a better word for it.

When a pain started in his chest, Erik found himself rubbing at it, thinking this was the worst possible time to get sore, but he decided he could work the soreness out. All he had to do was keep going, working on the house he was building. The pain would go away in time, he was sure.
And that was when his arm went to sleep, pins and needles in his hand and up his arm, something that he wasn’t too pleased about. The biggest question was just how it happened. He hadn’t been sitting any way that should’ve led to his arm going to sleep.
Of course, the more he thought about it, the worse he felt. It seemed like each and every second was taking his energy and strength. All he could manage to do was float himself down from the house he was standing on top of while he was working.

“During the battle, Erik sustained multiple injuries. One of them was worse than the others,” And yet, Hank was still procrastinating telling Charles, “It’s something that he can certainly survive, but with us not knowing what we’re doing, exactly, we may not give him the best chances.”
“Hank, I need you to just tell me what’s going on and tell me now. We need to help Erik as soon as possible and I need to know what’s going on right now,” Charles said, not liking having to snap at the other man but something needed to be done. If he could reach him, he had a feeling he would be lightly smacking him on the cheek to get his attention.

Summary
Erik could safely say that his mental health wasn’t the best. It never had been, at least, not since he was a child and blissfully unaware of the world around him. The things that had happened to him were hardly something someone could just overcome with ease. And he was one to hold grudges which only seemed to go further in his current state.
But, all of that aside, he was at a better place in his life now than he had been in years. He and Charles had finally worked things out and were happily in a relationship. He was teaching the children how to use their powers and training them to fight and defend themselves. The family he thought he never had now included a son and a partner and a lot of kids he had grown to think of as his own.
So, he had to question why he was still feeling this way now, even after all this time when he should be happy.

Without his powers—something he’d had all his adult life and relied so heavily on—he didn’t know what to do or who he was. There were only so many things he could think to do and yet, he wasn’t sure he could bring himself to do any of them.
The first thought was Charles, to go running back and hope that he would have a way to help or know what to do. At the very least, he could take Erik in and help him feel more like himself. It was something he knew Charles could do, if anyone could make Erik feel better and remind him that he was more than his powers, it would be Charles.
But was it really that simple? Charles ran a school for mutants and wasn’t Erik just baseline now?

Everything from his past seemed to be haunting him, creeping up and wrapping around him, pulling him into the darkness. Mentally, he was flailing, trying to escape but he wasn't making any progress. There seemed to be no escape.
If the thing haunting him wasn’t real, it would’ve been easier. If it hadn’t been mistakes he had made, people he had hurt then perhaps he could move on and leave all of this behind him. But, he had to face his mistakes at some point and, at two in the morning seemed to be the best time for something like that.
