Odysseus had finally made it home to roost, safe with his wife, son, and great-grandfather. He had even been making amends with Athena as of late- it was hard not to, seeing how good she was with Telemachus.
But he still had his nightmares. Of course he did. And while being back on open sea with his crew wasn’t the standard setup, seeing everyone he had once loved was pain enough and he knew it would get worse.
Except, he never woke up. Instead he started to change things.
And oh, that was more terrifying than a nightmare ever could be.

Polyphemus happens to be in just the right spot to separate Odysseus from his men when they first arrive in the cave, before anyone manages to cause any harm. Xenia is invoked and respected, agreements are made, and Odysseus gets to leave with supplies and directions for the price of a few barrels of wine. Everything is good!
Except Athena appears and disavows him with teary eyes afterward. Something happened in Polyphemus' cave that makes her cut contact, and Odysseus has no idea what.

Summary
That was yesterday. Today, they row towards the open portal, glowing an ominous shade of green-grey and sucking out all the color and warmth from around it. Only now, faced with the faint sound of screams and the stench of death, can Eurylochus fully appreciate the sheer absurdity of the situation he’s found himself in. Dread fills him, freezing him in place as he watches death approach one wave at a time. He thinks, absently, that he probably should have voiced his complaints.
Later, he’s certain of it.

The underworld is not a fun place. Eurylochus watches as everything unravels around him, and wonders if it’s really worth the danger of picking up shards of shattered glass in the dark. -
