Though they knew it not when this portrait was painted, Thorin, Frerin, and Dis would each be tested by the coming darkness, as the kingdom they loved would be torn from them, reduced to smouldering ruins and echoing, empty halls when the greatest calamity of its age, the dragon Smaug, strikes with fire on wings and unquenchable greed.
