He wanted to pace. Stretch his legs a bit, use up the anxious energy bubbling up just beneath his cold skin.
He didn’t. Instead, he sat in the corner next to the door, hugging the wall and hoping enough of his body fit into the small blind spot of the cell’s window to hide him from any eyes that could try and look for him in the most unlikely of places.

He looks, Scully thinks, remarkably like a puppy that’s been left out on the porch in a thunderstorm and is unsure whether it’s still wanted. She resists the urge to reach over and pat his head accordingly, reassuringly. Helpless looks infuriatingly endearing on him, and her annoyance immediately deflates by at least half. Damn him.

On any other night, the rustle of leaves, the snap of twigs under unseen paws, the frantic scramble of nocturnal creatures fleeing his passage would have sent him spiraling into a whimpering ball of terror. Not tonight. Tonight, something else drowned out the forest’s symphony of dread. Tears pricked his eyes, blurring the streaking trees into smears of shadow.
The boy. The one who called him friend. Slumped unnaturally against the massive, gnarled roots of an ancient oak. His head lolled at an angle that made Zenitsu’s own breath catch in his throat. The familiar green and black checkered pattern of his haori was stained dark with patches of wetness that gleamed dully in the moonlight. Mud was caked thickly on one side of his face, obscuring his features. One arm lay limply at his side, the other bent at an angle that looked… wrong.

Mac paused, opened his mouth, and then saw Jack’s shit-eating grin and realized his partner was just screwing with him.
“Then no.” Mac huffed, looking back down at his report. “I can’t ‘whip you up’ a thermometer.”
“Shame.” Jack turned back to the TV. He didn’t sound particularly bothered.
Mac drummed his pen against the couch, the sound muffled. “…but you feel alright?”
Jack paused the movie this time, and the sudden absence of the action-movie chaotic soundtrack was blunt. Jack twisted to angle towards Mac fully, bracing his elbows on his knees and giving Mac both his full attention and a tolerant but slightly bewildered smile.
“I’m ok, Mac.” Jack reiterated slowly and warmly. “I appreciate the concern, but it’s just a cold. It’s not gonna kill me.” -
