Summary
Abruptly, there was a loud noise that echoed through the cave like thunder. Buck turned behind him, trying to find the source of the noise. Then, there was a violent rush of water that burst through like a broken dam, and before Buck could even react, the dip, which was mostly empty moments ago, had filled with wild, murky water. The movement reminded Buck of those water-rapid rides, traveling too quickly for any person to be able to walk through them. Buck watched in horror as the water rose fast, faster than anything he had seen before, even in the tsunami, and suddenly, he couldn’t see the ledge where Eddie was standing anymore.
His eyes widened in panic. “Eddie!” he screamed, fruitlessly attempting to be heard over the sound of the water. “Eddie, are you there?”
---
During a rescue in stormy weather, Eddie gets left behind when the cave they're in floods.
Buck struggles to cope.

Summary
You (Eddie Diaz) have been asked so many times. Shannon asked you on the beach on that perfect day in the short window of time she was back in your life. Frank asked you when you were fighting your way back to stable for the sake of your son. Bobby asked you when you sat with him at the kitchen table in the firehouse and asked him if he thought you were afraid of commitment. Buck asked you when you admitted you were trying to make it work with Ana for the sake of Chris, and again when you told him about Kim.
What do you want, Eddie? For years it’s felt like the answer was on the tip of your tongue, but you couldn’t quite name it. But now, finally, you know. What you want is you and Buck together with Christopher for the rest of your lives. And miraculously, that’s what he wants too. But it’s a long road ahead, and even though it’s worth it it won’t be easy. Luckily you have a lot of amazing people in your corner who will support you along the way. You may make some mistakes as you go, but you have a feeling it’s all going to work out for the best.

Summary
It’s Buck’s first thought—I lost Eddie. He thinks it before he realizes, before he’s aware enough to know that he’s having a first thought, which meant he wasn’t awake and is now.
He lost Eddie. One moment Eddie was there, and the next there was a car where Eddie had been, and Buck doesn’t know what happened then. He just thinks, I lost Eddie I lost Eddie I lost Eddie, over and over, and as it whirls through his mind he realizes a few other things—like the fact that he was also right by where the car hit Eddie, which means Buck also was probably hit by the car. And like the fact that his side hurts, and his leg.Or, a call goes badly and leads to Buck thinking that Eddie is hurt and possibly dead, and Eddie thinking that Buck is hurt and possibly dead, and everyone else thinks they're dumb.

“What does that mean, if I’m going?”
Buck opens his mouth, then closes it again.
“Everything’s in transit, I sold all my dishes, I’m sleeping on the floor!” Eddie argues, gesturing emphatically, “The flight’s in 6 hours. What do you mean, if I’m going? I’m going.”

Eddie is going to move to El Paso, get a concussion, and save Buck from a fire. Not in that order. Buck and Eddie have trouble saying what they mean. Also not in order. The narrative is a mess because the boys are a mess. There, I said it.

“So,” Bobby interrupts gently, “how about we all go around and say our favorite…” his gaze lingers an extra second on Rocio, and he shrugs casually— “animals?”
“She’s not seven,” Eddie tells Bobby with a frown.
Rocio scoffs. “She still likes animals.”

There’s a new probationary firefighter. There’s Heelys. There’s even a heavy-handed religious epiphany quoting scripture from Luke. Eddie is going to get a three chapter realization/healing arc that doesn’t involve moving to El Paso or so help me God

Summary
As he had entered the empty construction site, he had tripped over debris from the previous tenants. They hadn’t had enough time to properly move out, so there were scattered remains of lives in the empty apartments. When he saw a communal children’s play space he stood frozen for a few seconds before sinking to his knees and screaming. Fire had burst from his veins and snaked along hallways, bursting pipes and catching on old electrical wiring while Johnny sat encased in a ball of flaming rage. His tears felt like lava and his hands melted the floor beneath him but he screamed until he couldn’t anymore and then laughed until the floors above him started collapsing around him. He hadn’t controlled the fire at all which resulted in several close calls to his safety before he was able to get out of the building as it started folding in on itself. When it was done and he was home again, he had finally found a purpose to what he had previously considered a cursed existence: burn them all to ash.
