Keith joined him at the railing, wearing his matching, Gryffindor jumper.
“How did you know where to find me?” Lance glanced sideways. Keith raised an eyebrow.
“I’ve slept in the same dorm as you for six years. I know where you go to recharge.” His face faltered suddenly. “Sorry, do you want me to leave you alone? I--”
He took a step back but Lance reached out, grabbing his hand. They both froze and the contact and Lance hastily put a space between them, hand clasped to his chest.
“No, it’s fine. You can stay.” Keith’s face relaxed. Lance held up his broom. “I was about to go for a ride - want to come?”
“Yeah, sure.” Keith grinned.

Keith stared at Lance for a moment, then promptly chucked a pillow at his head. "Are you an idiot?!”
“No, and I resent the question. I’m just very adventurous. We’re in Gryffindor, Keith, what do you want from me?”
“Lance! You shouldn't leave the castle at night, and the Black Lake is really dangerous! It's got all sorts of creatures in it!”
“Uh, yeah, including mermaids. Mermaids, Keith. Mermaids.”
“Repeating the word ‘mermaids’ isn't going to convince me that this is a good idea."
Lance invites Keith to a picnic by the Black Lake with Hunk and Pidge, and it's actually really nice. Until it isn't, because Lance of course insists on going swimming.

Day 4: So maybe getting dared to sneak into Slytherin's common room wasn't one of Lance's finer moments.
Day 5: It's a Friday night and you know what that means: movie night!
Day 6: It's time to prove to Pidge once and for all that ghosts exist.
Day 7: Keith turns to video games to escape his overbearing foster parents and meets a certain someone online.
Day 8: It's just his luck that Keith gets lost on his first day at the garrison.

Day 10: Lance and Keith go hunting for mothman.
Day 11: Working in a tavern in the 1860s, Keith can only get so much. Luckily, Lance is one of them.

Coran went quiet for a moment and Lance could tell he was debating something.
“This… isn’t really my place to say this… but he might need to be reminded that you’re his friend. Especially after this.”
Lance blinked, confused. “What?”
“Just… to clear the air a bit.” Coran stirred his tea needlessly. “Set some things straight… Reaffirm the old camaraderie... bond…”
“Coran,” Lance said seriously. “Are you telling me that Keith doesn’t think we’re friends?”
“That’s not what I’m telling you at all,” Coran said and took a sip of his tea. “But I may be very heavily implying it.”
“Oh my gosh.” Lance let his head fall back onto his chair and stared up at the ceiling, trying to comprehend how he’d made it through two years of an apparently one-sided friendship without noticing. “Of course. Only Keith.”

They'd had their ups and downs, sure, but they always came back together stronger than before. Lance didn't want to lose someone like Keith. That is why Lance will never admit that he may possibly be in love with his best friend.
Keith Kogane is hopelessly in love with his teammate, dormmate, best friend, and pain in his ass, Lance McClain. He has been since their Second year. But Lance isn't interested in him like that. So, Keith will just keep his feelings bottled up, and one day he'll die. Problem solved.

They meet in Keith’s fifth year and Shiro’s sixth under the warm sun of a Saturday Quidditch match.
As always, it goes from there.
And of course he notices the way Shirogane flies around the Hufflepuff posts with dexterity not common in a Chaser, much less a Keeper. Of course he notices his smile and the way he seems to read the other team’s plays before they even get into formation, how he gets the Quaffle back every time. How could he not notice the best player in the field?
Lance says he’s got a crush. Keith says he just has eyes.

He breathes heavily once he finishes his monologue. The silence that follows is probably the most uncomfortable and long experience he's ever had. The words "I want you" linger in the air with a foul stench and a bitter taste on Lance's tongue.
"Keith," Lance feels the waterworks coming but he holds it together because he knows once he's alone he can let it all out until his tear ducts dry out like the water on a hot summer day in Cuba. "I-I am so sorry—"

But Lance wasn’t really listening. He was still watching the winning team as they danced in the rain, loud and shiny and victorious, Keith Kogane lifted high on Shiro’s shoulders. He was smiling, and it was a weirdly foreign look on his face, and even though he had never met him before, Lance thought of magnificent desert blooms that spring to life after a monsoon, and how their impermanence is what makes them special and unique.
Storm-dark eyes flashed up to the stands, and Lance freezes in his footsteps.
And then he decided, “I’m gonna play for Gryffindor.”
