I never planned on telling this story—mostly because I figured no one in their right mind would want front-row seats to the ugliness inside my head. So here it is: the uprising, the propos, the lies, the losses… all the things we did in the dark, hoping it would amount to something brighter. Katniss will get the songs and the statues one day. Me? I get the part that never makes it into the Capitol broadcasts—the planning, the screaming, the withdrawal, the guilt that sticks to your ribs like bad oatmeal. And through it all, I’m supposed to keep my girl from burning herself alive while the rebellion insists she’s fireproof.
If you want a tale about heroes, you’re in the wrong bunker. But if you want the truth—raw, unpleasant, stupidly hopeful at times—pull up one of District Thirteen’s uncomfortable chairs. I’ve got a story, and for once, I’m sober enough to tell it.
