Summary
Peeta Mellark has been rescued from the Capitol, but he's not the same boy with the bread Katniss once knew. His highjacked mind has opened his eyes to the real Katniss Everdeen. She's selfish, surly, and indifferent towards him. And he hates her for it. He's angry that he was abandoned. Again. He's bitter that everyone treats him like a deranged monster. All he wants is to go home, but even that has been taken away from him.
Late one night, he gets a visitor in his hospital room in District Thirteen. Someone who tells him they can give him something impossible: A second chance. He has nothing in this timeline. No family, no friends, not even memories he can trust. So he accepts.
Peeta finds himself in District Twelve on Reaping Day of the Seventy-Fourth Hunger Games. He vows to do it differently. This time, there will only be one Victor, and it won't be Katniss Everdeen.
As he struggles to survive the 74th Games for the second time, he finds that some things can be fixed, but some things are just inevitable. As if no matter what he does to change it, this would've happened anyway.

Clove’s nails dug lightly into her jaw. Katniss’ hands hovered uselessly before landing, hesitant, on Clove’s hips, unsure, transferring the blood on her hands, not that Clove seemed to care, biting down on her lower lip-

The actual reason he came is a lot more embarrassing, so Cato leaves her implicit question unanswered. He also leaves the door open, in case Clove really is worried about him trying to attack her. (Though considering what they’ve been training for their entire lives, he’d be surprised if it was an actual jab. Clove knows what they’re waiting for, that there’s no point starting a conflict before the arena.)
As he’d expected, Clove looks exhausted. Her hair’s a mess, and her eyes are red-ringed, like she’s been up for hours. She paces a circle in front of her bed, then again, like it’s a well-trodden path. Her hands, she wrings in front of her chest. As Cato makes his way closer, she shoots him a dangerous look, so he reroutes and drops into the seat by her bed, hands raised in surrender. Like he’s going to test her right now when he’s seen, thoroughly, what she’s capable of, with a throwing knife and otherwise.
“Thinking about the Games?”
“No,” Clove sneers, “I’m hoping for sunshine tomorrow.”
“My bad,” Cato snorts, “I guess I’ll just leave you in here to walk a hole in the floor.”
