He'd never gotten to be a proper teenager: he never finished school, he never went to any festivals, never took anyone out on an awkward first date and tried to kiss them at the fireworks display. When other teenagers were worrying about driver’s licenses and girlfriends, he was jumping between homeless shelters, stealing toothpaste and bottled water from convenience stores.
He laid awake, face sour, most of the night, staring at his hands stretched towards the ceiling. He would start small azure fires in his palms and snuff them out, over and over. He was stupid for not asking her name. He was stupid for wanting her name in the first place. Maybe he was just altogether stupid.
The following month, a monster attacked his apartment building. Then things really went to shit.
