The sympathetic nervous system surges adrenaline through the body, dilates the pupils, quickens the heart, and primes the muscles for a desperate run or a sharp attack. Meanwhile, the parasympathetic nervous system acts as its counterbalance, slowing the heart rate and promoting bodily recovery, normally serving as the soothing aftermath. However, in certain cases, when the reactions triggered by the sympathetic nervous system no longer suffice, the Dorsal Vagal Complex activates.
Suguru knew this intimately. He had explained these responses to countless patients, had laid bare the anatomy of fear and survival in countless therapy sessions. He was a psychologist, trained to understand and guide others through moments like this. Yet here he was, frozen. Not fighting, not fleeing. The parasympathetic nervous system pulling the strings and he sank into silence, unable to move, unable to piece words together as he stared blankly at the man before him.
