    Hyrule’s scratch (it wasn’t a scratch, but he couldn’t keep thinking about it. If it was just a scratch then they didn’t need to know about it. Time wasn’t keeping track of every single nick the Links got, that was just absurd, right? So it was a scratch. And he was fine.) (He was not fine.) burned and pulsed in his boot. He readjusted his legs, kicking them out from under the blankets. He winced, that hadn’t helped at all.

    "I do- I. I worry,” Legend said.

    The two sat in silence for a few minutes more, watching the rest of the chain mill about the camp. Legend pushed himself up, pulling himself away from Hyrule to look him in the eyes. He momentarily missed the physical contact, before quickly squashing that feeling.

    “I mean really, what’s the worst that could happen?”

    Or, Hyrule has black blood. The chain doesn’t know this. This leads to some unfortunate events when Four catches him cleaning a wound in the middle of the night.

It might be in the nearest tree, in the flower that stands alone at their feet, in the blade of grass that looks slightly suspicious.

    Who knows, it could even maybe —just maybe— be in the shape of their own footsteps. In the wind that lightly hits their faces. In the darkness of their own shadows.

    They don’t know if it's standing right next to them. Or watching them in their sleep. Or talking to them using words that feel somehow in the wrong voice.

    It’s hard to believe that it could even be staring directly at their eyes with the gaze that used to be blue.

    It wasn’t sure what to think. It wasn’t supposed to think about its wielders. But it found itself looking forward to the stories, keeping an eye out while the boy slept, memorizing as much of the information he gave it as it could.

    Its job was to protect the innocent, after all.

    Wind sighed, leaning back against a tree. “What is our goal?”

    Legend snorted at the question. “It’s obvious, isn’t it? We’re here to find Link.”

    The others all paused, processing that, and Link froze from where he was peeking out of the scarf.

    “... That… makes sense,” Four said after a moment.

    “I suppose that is fairly obvious,” Sky sighed. “But surely we’d have run into him by now?”

    Pressing his back against a higher fold of scarf so he wasn’t visible anymore, Link took quick, panicked breaths, keeping as quiet as possible. They were looking for him.

     

    Or: What if Hyrule was the last one to join the Chain, and what if he wasn't in the shape of a Hylian when he did it? And what if there were a lot of tears and some hugs at the very end?
