Wei Wuxian hummed as he worked, the melody bright and tuneless, echoing softly through the cottage. Morning light poured through the cracked windowpanes, dust particles drifting like lazy spirits between bundles of drying herbs and the hollow stares of half-finished dolls.
At the center of the room, spread across a workbench cluttered with bones, thread, and a small chipped teacup, lay the beginnings of a body.
Not a real one. Not technically- or maybe not yet ? Wei Wuxian didn’t like confining what defined a “body”, really.It was a collection of animal bones- delicately arranged in the shape of a person.
“For research,” Wei Wuxian said to no one, as he adjusted a wrist. “Obviously.”
Outside, the trees rustled. The air smelled like pine, charcoal, and faintly of rain. Somewhere in the distance, a squirrel shrieked about some injustice or other. It was peaceful. Or as peaceful as things got in a forest full of resentful spirits, and one possessed rabbit doll that kept rearranging his furniture.
