John Drake is assigned by M9 to mentor a young agent (a “pup”), and is less than delighted about it. He has his own problems to deal with, though he would much prefer to forget about them. His new trainee makes that difficult.
Drake’s a pup, and pups must be browbeaten, shouted at, punished for the smallest of infractions. It’s for their own good, of course, or so the accepted wisdom goes. Put the fear of God into them; impress on them at all times that they must never be anything less than perfect. It could save their lives one day.
