The years were speeding up, of that there was no doubt. But where once Laurence had marked their turning by the height and wildness of the currents of the oceans or the air, and the ebb and flow of military campaigns, his seasons now took a more domestic character. They were delineated by the nighttime tumult of lambing, or the first fine evening that after-dinner drinks could be enjoyed outside Temeraire’s pavilion, the deadheading of roses or the smell of the autumn’s first peat fire.
Laurence, now a retired gentleman of some means, is able to mark his friend’s birthdays as he has always wished.

Accepting a housemate recommendation from his friend who was almost definitely a spy wasn't the best idea John Granby ever had. In his defense, though, he had a pyromaniac eight year old to wrangle, which took up about half of his brain capacity on a good day.

It was starting to make sense why the Admiralty had left so many details out, they were raiding a mansion near London because it had apparently been taken over by "belligerents".
Of course that was no longer the case once he had been... killed? knocked out? He wasn't sure but he had known something definitely went wrong when he had been reincarnated as a dragon and one of the men in odd uniforms surrounding him had said the year was "2017". How wonderful.
This fanfic seeks to provide a possible interpretation of what Temeraires alternate reality would be like after the main events of the books in the 21st Century.

Set at the beginning of Black Powder War (Book 3 in the Temeraire Series).
The Allegiance is a burnt wreck in the harbour of Macao, so Laurence finds himself in need of a different route to Istanbul, and of a skillful guide. The vagabond who delivered Lenton's orders, one Tenzing Tharkay, denies his request, citing prior obligations. He is, however, willing to hitch Laurence up to his own companions from his last journey back from Istanbul: experienced travelers in their own right, but carrying a very obvious secret that might just change Britain's fate in the Napoleonic wars. Suddenly, Laurence and Granby find themselves fighting on two fronts: one is their need to retrieve the Turkish dragon eggs that Britain so desperately needs, the other is swaying the loyalty of their mysterious guides back towards British shores. If only their guides were not so entirely unforthcoming and reserved … and why has Laurence been so dejected ever since he has left Macao (Tharkay) behind? -

Rumour reaches Loch Laggan before Dayes does; but rumour can be a confused, wretched beast, and Granby is not at all sure that he can trust what he hears. But if it is even half-true, how famous: that a Chinese dragonet has been captured, or discovered, or somehow located, and that Dayes will be its captain.
It’s not simply his friendship with Lieutenant Dayes that makes Granby resent that Naval interloper Laurence so much.
