    Summary

A collection of one-shots all centered by different flavours of gender bending within the Temeraire universe (multiverse?). Sweet Polly-Olivers, gender swaps, trans characters, other general fuckery.... and in the middle of it, a cast of 1800s idiots just trying to get a handle on it all.

Now Playing: Harcourt struggles with what can only be the expected disrespect a navyman has towards a female serving officer.

    Summary

When the crew of the Reliant captures the Amitie and the dragon egg it carries, Captain Will Laurence is set ill-at-ease—not because he is unfamiliar with dragons, but rather the opposite. For, over a decade ago following an injury aboard the Shorewise, he discovered he bore a curse, one that would cause him to awake from his dreams as something other than human, if ever his attentiveness slipped. He was a weredragon.

But then the hatchling Temeraire chooses him as his Captain, and the course of his life is forever altered, to become an aviator of His Majesty's Aerial Corps...at least by day. By night, the question of his nature remains quite up in the air.

In retrospect, perhaps the most shocking part of the entire affair was that the idea had not been Temeraire's, originally.

    Summary

"Well," Lily said, "I don't see why another Longwing mightn’t take her.”

    “Take him,” Catherine corrected.

“No,” Lily said, lowering her head to peer at young Geoffrey. “No, I am quite certain I am right. You are a girl, are you not?”

“Well, no,” Geoffrey said, “but when I am a captain I will be.”

Laurence has been entrusted with the care of his nephew to see if he is a good fit for the Aerial Corps. Slowly he realizes that all is not as it seems, and must once again confront the way he understands the world.

    Summary

His Majesty's Aerial Corps holds many secrets, but none are more closely guarded than the Plague and the Change. A century ago, amidst the War of the Spanish Succession, disease ravaged the British Isles, bringing about the death of a majority of dragons—a tragedy of the highest order kept hidden from the public eye. Even those that survived were left unable to fight or breed new offspring. After the Plague, all that was left to carry forward to future generations were the surviving eggs yet unhatched and a single healthy formation kept away in isolation. But these were insufficient in number to make a sustainable population, and besides, there was the more urgent problem that England was still at war and still needed her dragons. The alchemist Sir Issac Newton approached the Corps, however, and proposed a solution, one that won them the war and one that is still carried forward to this day: the Change. Dragons need not be hatched, when they can be made.

Captain Will Laurence, of His Majesty's Navy, knows none of this when the hatchling Temeraire chooses him as his companion. But to Loch Laggan they have been sent, and to Loch Laggan they must go, unaware that some people go there not to train, but to become dragons.

    Summary

    Temeraire is dead.

Temeraire is dead, and Laurence’s reason for living along with him. He stumbles on, day by day, conscious of the concern of his friends and family, yet unable to care.

Until an unexpected letter leads Laurence to something even more unexpected still: a child.

What a Chinese orphan is doing on the streets of Edinburgh is anyone’s guess, including the orphan's. Tharkay, for his part, suspects foul play. Laurence can see all that is sensible in the man’s suspicions, yet once again he cannot bring himself to care. Not when the child reminds him so very strongly of that which he’s lost.

    Summary

“And it does not hurt to be one or the other?” he asks, fascination settling into his stomach, even as it turns at the odd sight. His hand raises, as if to touch, before he remembers himself and leaves it hovering awkwardly in the air. The change reminds him of the shimmering eels they would pull up sometimes, in the darkest parts of the ocean they sailed across; creatures that made no sense with their slick flailing tentacles and terrifying wide jaws with too many teeth, ones that could not be eaten, for they were all muscle, but he had always found them all the more mesmerizing for their strangeness. “You do not find yourself holding back part of your whole when you are singularly human?”

Women are not the only secret that the Aerial Corps is hiding. The bloodswearing is another.

    Summary

Granby is fresh off a break up and looking for a rebound, and there just so happens to be a hot Navy transplant on base. Sure, he's rebuffed all Granby's advances so far, but he probably just needs a little help. Maybe he's shy! Granby has an excellent plan to ambush him in the base gym, wearing the sluttiest gym outfit he can put together (Thanks for the shorts, Catherine!) What could go wrong?
Captain Little is looking forward to a quiet evening alone after a stressful day on base, but he can't let some dumb lieutenant with a crush get decked by a homophobic Navy transplant. Good Lord, what is he *wearing?*

    Summary

Catherine said, "Jane told me that she'd mentioned it to you, though it was when you and Temeraire had first come to Loch Laggan. More than a decade ago, good heavens."

"Mentioned what to me?" Laurence asked, still vaguely concerned about the flush on Harcourt's cheeks.

"Well. About you... that is, us, to secure future companions for Lily and Temeraire..." Harcourt wouldn't meet his eyes, stammering uncharacteristically. "Not to say that it would only be an obligation, of course! You truly are a dear friend, Laurence, and I'd trust you with this more than anyone. You and Mr. Tharkay both, since I know there could never be one involved and not the other..."

Laurence felt an odd prickle upon the back of his neck, the beginnings of a suspicion-- ungentlemanly to even consider-- and found himself asking, voice gone a bit rough. "Harcourt-- Catherine. Please, I beg you speak freely, for I am always at your service. What is it you would ask of me?"

Harcourt's green eyes were wide, and Laurence had never noticed just how many flecks of gold they contained. She held his gaze and the prickling sensation, like ghostly fingertips, intensified.

"I'd ask you for a baby, Will."

    Summary

William Laurence, third son of Lord and Lady Allendale, has been adrift in the world since his failed career start in His Majesty’s Navy. In an attempt to gain a foothold as candidate for Stable Master in his family's legacy as one of the top Thoroughbred yards in the nation, he takes on the seemingly straightforward task of a business trip to the far-flung island of Thisby, where supposedly, an eccentric horseman has managed to introduce the fabled capaill uisce into his breeding stock bloodlines. However, as the autumn tides turn, the island’s facade begins to crumble and Thisby’s true nature reveals itself. Laurence’s life is thrown into upheaval when unforeseen circumstances bring him to enter in this year's race, and he must capture a water horse of his own: a reckless undertaking that could cost him his life.

    Summary

After the war is over, William Laurence and Temeraire go to live on the estate of Tenzing Tharkay. It is a brave new world.

30 days' worth of prompts -- ranging from drabbles to over-long fics in their own right -- all (mostly) in the same post-canon story I am projecting for them. Narrative is non-linear but canon-compliant, so spoilers for all 9 Temeraire novels.

(Ratings differ for each chapter so check the index in Chapter 1/Index. Any chapter-specific CWs/TWs will be listed in the chapter notes.)
